Title: Most referenced threads and posts
Post by: suchmoon on September 29, 2020, 08:02:47 PM
You know what happens when an AI says "too much work" (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5262967.msg55259896#msg55259896)? Yep, humans have to do it. So here is a list of the most referenced posts within Bitcointalk. A reference is a quote or a link inside a post (not e.g. in a signature). There is at least one known issue - because human - the first post of a thread is counted separately from a link to the thread without the "msg" part. That's how the rules topic appears at positions #2 and #4. (fixed) Update 2020-10-02: Excluded references within the same thread, and references between the posts of the same user. This removed a lot of spammy threads. The original list is here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5279648.0). Update 2020-10-04: Fixed a bug in finding the first post of the thread, which was causing the "posts of the same user" condition to not work in some cases. Update 2020-10-12: Added "users" column to show the number of users who posted the link. # count users post --- ----- ----- ---------------------------- 1 5375 1910 Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657) 2 3224 1695 Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 29-Sep-2020] (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=615953) 3 2848 1746 Forum ranks/positions/badges (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?) Nice work, it would be great if someone took it upon themselves to merge all the blacklists and existing alt/scam/red-bases into one. https://i.imgur.com/gzQiQ6f.gif

So here is a list of the most referenced posts within Bitcointalk. A reference is a quote or a link inside a post (not e.g. in a signature). There is at least one known issue - because human - the first post of a thread is counted separately from a link to the thread without the "msg" part.
Nice data set suchmoon. Does it count even the quoted message post or thread, has been labeled as snipped or only those with contain message inside? How do you able to configure this anyway? It seems a tough work to know which post or message has been quoted. Really an AI job. So this post is the highest quoted post? Bitfinex https://i.imgur.com/Nz3c8Mn.png (https://i.imgur.com/qWBJeIV.png) Explanation (http://www.rtcons.com/wall/explanation.html) ExplanationChartbuddy provides a chart which shows the change of the market depth with time. Chart shows the market depth for the last hour, the beginning of the hour at the back, latest time at the front. The bids (what people are willing to pay) stack up on the left and the asks (what people are wanting to get paid) stack up on the right. A depth chart indicates how much it would conceivably take to shift the price. Note that orders can be cancelled so judgement should be applied. Large orders produce a large vertical part on the chart or a "wall". By watching how walls are added, moved or removed, it is possible to make a judgement of market sentiment (or arguably just observe attempts at market manipulation). The large numbers at the top are the latest values for the closest bids and asks. The difference between these is the "spread". World times are also listed for several major cities. Interesting. When I clicked the number 1 I thought why WO is popping, and the number 1 spot falls to a very quality response.

Any quote counts, as long as it links to a valid Bitointalk post URL. It doesn't matter if it was edited/trimmed. Also just posting a plain link counts too, e.g. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5279037.msg55287074#msg55287074 How do you able to configure this anyway? It seems a tough work to know which post or message has been quoted. Really an AI job.
I had a bunch of posts indexed for plagiarism search a while ago. LoyceV and TryNinja have similar datasets too. So this post is the highest quoted post?
Yeah it's kinda "cheating", looks like some sort of a bot that was posting charts and linking back to the first post. I think #2 is a more genuine top-referenced post.

I know my database is very incomplete and many posts from this year are missing, but I'm surprised it is giving me way less results than it should (according to your numbers). For example, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1875364 has only 21 results (vs your 837) if I paste the entire URL in the "content" field and make a search on https://ninjastic.space/search Could you take a look for an example of a post my website should be returning? I think it's because it only returns posts where the URL is explicitly found in the post (and not just quoted). edit: I guess that's the case. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1875364 returns this post (because I mentioned the link above). https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5279037 doesn't returns this post (because I only quoted your post on the topic).

Yes, that must be it. I think you mentioned that tags are stripped from your data before it's indexed so it means href attribute values are not being searched.

A very interesting topic indeed. But there are some limitations. I think some of the threads have been listed here due to being quoted in the thread itself. I mean there are some megathreads where OP has been quoted a few hundreds times and thus it has got a place in this top 100 list. You would better exclude the quotation in the thread itself. I mean the quotation in the thread itself refers to no good other than replying the OP, so what's the point keeping that quotation and ranking it :D Anyway, it was really a great work.

It's a good point and I might do it later but it's a bit more work due to the way my data was structured.

You know what happens when an AI says "too much work" (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5262967.msg55259896#msg55259896)? This topic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2159468.msg22796283#msg22796283) for example shouldn't be in the list.

Yeah it's kinda "cheating", looks like some sort of a bot that was posting charts and linking back to the first post. I think #2 is a more genuine top-referenced post. If it is "kinda cheating" bro I think the right one for the #1 sport is your #2 which is the Overview of Signature-ad campaigns in Bitcointalk. I have no surprise here that this thread and the thread for our unofficial rules will be sharing the top spot since they are mostly mentioned in either meta or the beginner section of the forum as they are frequently asked a lot. For the #1 spot I haven't come across this post at all, it's the first time I have seen this post and I have not seen anyone mentioning this to the forum.

I have updated the list in the OP. It now excludes references within the same thread, as well as references between the posts of the same user. Made other tweaks related mainly to how I was previously sometimes incorrectly eliminating duplicates. There are still some weird threads in there, some in foreign languages so I'm not sure what's going on there. Perhaps they are that popular.

Nice work though, no need to bookmark each thread anymore to give reference in the future.Just bookmarking this thread will be enough. 8) Smark worker!

I will go through all the links one by one and try to list the inappropriate referenced links here with a possible valid explanation. Threads are not quoted here mean they are helpful enough or popular enough to be referenced by many users. 9 1660 Re: Monitoring Bittrex Tokens: Events, Project Social Activity and Price Changes (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2728398)
I was not able to find any particular reason for this thread to be in the most referenced list. Why such a thread would be referenced 1660 times. No valid explanation. 21 729 Direct Dice - 10 BTC Jackpot ! Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin & Darkcoin ! (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=743577)
A not so popular gambling site has been referenced 729 times? It seems like they had created a lot of giveaways back in the day. One of their sponsored giveaway thread has 99 pages of reply. It makes sense how they come at the most referenced list although I don't like the reason at all. 25 641 [Ann]Vote New coins on Bter.com - Which new coin should Bter add in next week? As they had voting contest in this thread, many altcoin projects had mentioned the thread in their corresponding ANN thread to get some vote from their community. A search with bter gives me 5 pages of result. 28 597 Re: BEST DOTA2 TIPSTER HELPING YOU GET EASY BTC :) 0%/0MATCHES (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1418510)

I think TryNinja missed that. For example he missed this one- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5192497.msg54992149#msg54992149 This has been quoted a few times too. So, all these quotes also count. I have tried searching with p2pb2b scam and found a lot of search result which makes me think that it has been mentioned by a lot of users for pointing that p2pb2b is a scam and thus it makes sense why it is in the list. Edit- If you search with the topic id which is 5190513, you will find the direct url references of that thread. And the rest references are keyword based I think.

I found the issue. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5190513 returns 1. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5190513.0 returns 306. I will see if there is a better way to make my tool return all of them on the first search. edit: It should work better now.

Sweet. I'm excited that I actually have one post from that list, though I can't believe it was quoted 373 times. Something tells me tomorrow I'll be doing some investigating, or figuring out how to best go into hiding, one or the other...

They are links to translated ANN threads and their OPs post them in all bounty campaigns as references to their previous work (portfolio). Update 2020-10-02: Excluded references within the same thread, and references between the posts of the same user. This removed a lot of spammy threads. If the bolded part is true and the script you used is working perfectly, then either OPs apply for translation jobs with their alts or a fraudster is using their portfolios. For example, the OP of post #40 was cryptobaccar (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2084960) and he has an alt baccar (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1155962) who shared that link multiple times. Not sure about the other links, though.

I like your list much batter than Loyce's, who claimed I wasn't even in the top 100. :P Interesting, I found these results: "<a href="https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577765" occurs 275 times "<a href="https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577765.msg6311902#msg6311902" occurs 168 times Even though I didn't include the most recent posts, and "only" searched the first 53M posts. the difference shouldn't be so large. I'll run a new search for just "https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577765" and "https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577765.msg6311902#msg6311902" without "<a href=" (and without quotes). To be continued......

It looks like perhaps I should exclude the bounty board... links there are likely to be some sort of spam, e.g. a campaign asking to post in their main thread and post proof. That's against the rules but it may have happened with a few of those threads with weirdly high scores. Plus the Arabic translation threads. Aside from that, I don't want to start excluding individual posts/threads as that's prone to bias. If there are ~20 or so "undeserving" posts in the top 100 that's not a big deal. Perhaps it can help someone to improve their mod report stats ;D I can try to run a similar list for a certain timeframe, e.g. last month or last 12 months if there is interest. Same user. I didn't expect another of his thread. Well, he himself is the referrer of all these three threads.
I'll double-check this. It shouldn't have happened - user's own posts should not count.

I wonder if it's also possible to have a dedicated list for local boards like the German local board?

The link is https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577765.msg6311902 The # is just an anchor. I'll try one more time :) In the first 53M posts, I found: - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577765 3825 times
- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577765.msg6311902#msg6311902 1445 times

This looks about right. Try searching for {space}href="{url}" or <a{space}class="ul"{space}href="{url}" and include all three variations of the URL (thread, thread with .0, and post).

Attempt #3. I have fixed a bug and updated the list in the OP accordingly. In some cases I was incorrectly identifying the first post in the thread and consequently not eliminating user's own references. This fix reduced the spammy threads a little bit.
There are still some oddities, for example:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1715457.msg17196904#msg17196904
BADecker links to his own posts(s). Someone quotes him. Now BADecker's links count as "referenced" because technically someone else posted them. I could try eliminating links inside quotes and perhaps nested quotes but that might be unfair. If I post a link and someone reposts it by quoting me it's looks like a new independent reference that other users could potentially click on etc.
Also it'd be a lot of work but I can't admit that, can I.

I'm sorry it took a while but here is the list for German board. The following board IDs are included - let me know if I missed anything: 16, 35, 36, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 139, 140, 141, 152, 269, 270. Very nice list thank you :) Had considered to bring the original version into the German subforum but since 1miau already asked for a special version he might want to do it? In any case interesting to see which threads are the most important ones.

I added a "users" column to the OP. It shows the number of users who posted each link. This can give an additional insight as to which threads are more widely referenced as opposed to threads promoted by small groups of users.

I wonder if it's also possible to have a dedicated list for local boards like the German local board?
Don't worry, if it's too much work, just skip my comment, I don't want to make any trouble. :P
I'm sorry it took a while but here is the list for German board. No problem, much appreciated to have your list. It is already shared to our local German board: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5214456.msg55367892#msg55367892 It's a bit surprising we have so many shitcoin ANNs included, I guess it happens most likely when shitposters quote the official, international ANN where translations to local ANNs are linked. :D
