Title: How do I change a user on a forum? Help!
Post by: donatello345 on October 08, 2020, 09:20:09 PM
I have not found a similar topic anywhere. But I'm very curious, is it possible to change the username on this forum?

I hope this topic does not count as spam, because I really need that kind of help.

Its not possible in most cases. Sometimes requests can be made, but this is usually to do with privacy issues. The only real alternative, is to create a new user account. There's only been a handful that I know that have had their usernames changed, and these are usually somewhat high profile users that I know of. I'm not sure the reasons behind why they had their username changed, but it was probably for a fairly significant reason, especially in recent years since these requests are likely made all the time now that the forum is quite a bit larger than when I've seen usernames get changed frequently.

I don't want to create a new account, I need to stay on this one.

But I also need to change my username, what method are you talking about?

You can send a PM to theymos (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=35) or Cyrus (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=78147) with the reasons why you want to change your username. If they have time and are in a good mood, maybe they will do it.

Thanks for trying to help me, but this is the administration, is there any chance that they will read my letter?

Yes, they are the only ones who can change your username. I don't know if there is any chance, but if you really want to do it, then why not? Otherwise, just create a new account or keep your current username.

There is no option to change username in this forum. As mention by the reply above it is not possible to change username and the best way is to create alternative account.

Anyway, why want to change username? Do you feel your privacy gets compromised? Many of the users here are doing KYC including myself especially those days of bouny hunting in ICO projects. So, I think you can get used to it.

I want to change my name because a lot of people follow my old name and I don't like that.

Do you understand?

Your account is one-year old, not too old. I don't know what you did in the past and want to erase it but one thing you have know.

Even if you get acceptance from theymos or Cyrus to change your username, your real username will still be here. Only your display name will be changed. Username is a fixed one on the forum (one member = one unique, unchanged username), admins don't change username.

This fact means if I know your username (= old display name too) and use it to search on the forum, I will find you but the result will show you in a new display name.

Them giving you a chance to change your username will completely mostly on your excuse. The "because a lot of people follow my old name" could probably be quite broad; because I assume some people could possibly be requesting a name change to get away from their shady activity. You don't need to publicize your excuse here in this thread though, just make sure to explain clearly when messaging the admins.

Then there is no point in changing the username, since any user can find me in the old way.
Thanks for the info!

I'm not posting any excuses here, oh my god.

I just wanted to change my username, and you're already making me some kind of criminal.

Having an "excuse" or a valid reason in a way that they'll actually consider spending their time in changing your username. You're hugely overthinking what I said. "Excuse" doesn't automatically mean that you're hiding something or you did something wrong.

Also, if you want to change your username just because you want to without any reason whatsoever, then good luck because they're likely to not give you a chance.

Yes, you can change your username but you need 50 BTC for that purpose.  :)
Better stick to your account and stop thinking about this username change.

Q: I want to change my forum username. What should I do?
A: You can either donate 50 BTC to become a VIP (https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html) or PM theymos asking to change your username (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=35) (although he rarely accepts such requests nowadays).

<…> Then there is no point in changing the username, since any user can find me in the old way.<…>
Not only that: If you leave your posting history intact, anybody who knew where you had posted before can easily browse and find the content, and they’ll see the new associated name to the post’s content. Additionally, I’ve just checked a couple of profiles that changed their name on the forum, and it’s pretty easy to get an entry on Google that point’s to their new profile whilst searching for the old name.

Like TryNinja rightly said, you have to send a PM if you're persistentbof not loosing what you've got. I can see you have 87 activities, 87 posts and 1 merit on your profile and have even attained a member rank and you can't just let it all go by creating a new account. That's the sacrifice you must pay if you aren't so satisfy with the user you now possess otherwise, send a PM to theymos (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=35) or Cyrus (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=78147). They are the administrators yes! And they are the best to help you solve your request with good reason.
You asked if your message would be read @OP, well yes, it would but it's a question of if it would be replied and that basically depends on your reason and if they are in a good mood as @TryNinja rightly said.
If you value the account so bad and with good reason to change your user, then give it a trier and PM.

@donatello345 , it is really impossible to change your username, unless theymos decided to give you a chance. In most cases, users that are given chance to change their name are those who aren't that long enough in this forum and mostly newbies. Check this thread from Meta where a user back then has been given a chance to change his username[1], BUT with valid reasons (I guess). BTW, Here's theymos answering on a change name thread[2]. Even most of us wanted it to be a feature here in the Forum. But it do have a lot of disadvantages when and if implemented, mostly to run out of problems (when you are very well known).

The best move is to create a new account than wasting your time requesting to change your username for that reason. Even if someone can change it, nobody wants to change it for your reason. Do you think it's worth their time changing your username for that reason? Unless you have enough bitcoin to become a VIP in this forum.

Call me a cynic, but I don't believe anyone of the admins would bother doing this for a jr. member with no established reputation, as far as I'm aware so far the name change was only done for very prominent forum figures. If a new member would request it, I'm sure the admins won't bother to even reply, and you can totally understand that, because if they started doing this, everyone would start requesting it, and they will quickly become overwhelmed with requests.

By default SMF forum member can change their name but if the community is growing the admin should change it because the name and reputation go together when you are part of the forum, this is one bad excuse and a lame one if you asked me, but you can try your luck creating another account is your best option this account is only Junior member you only need one merit and more activity to reach junior member rank on your another account.

You should not expect to get a reply within 24 hours. At least wait a week, and if you still don't get any reply try again. If that doesn't work then forget it.

Exclusive members can change their names automatically.

-snip- Now only moderators, Donators, and VIP members can change their names automatically. -snip-

-snip- More than a day has passed, but I have not received any response. -snip-
There is still a chance for you to change your display name/username if you can provide a good reason and meet the following requirements:

-snip- Other members should contact me. I'll probably ignore your request if you have less than 50 posts (unless your posts are very good).
Each user has a display name, which is the only name ordinary users see, and a username, which is what you use to log-in with. Almost always, they are the same.

If I change a name for reasons of appearance, then I only change the display name. The username remains reserved, the user can still login using the username, PMs can still be sent to that username, "search member" allows searching for the old username, etc.

If I change a name for reasons of privacy, then I change both the username and the display name. In this case, it is possibly hazardous to reserve the old username, since it allows someone to test for the existence of that username, possibly defeating the privacy benefit. If you're worried about being impersonated, then simply don't seek to have your username changed.

You may not have the opportunity to change your username if you only want your account name to be unique or you don't want the account name to be imitated unless you reason that privacy might be considered. Everyone suggested to create a new account with the account name you want, but you refused because you already had the identity on the old account, I also appreciate that.

You may or may not get a response on this from the admins. Even if you are lucky to get a reply back, it will be a sorry message because changing username on this forum is not allowed / discouraged. I did not know any case where a username of any member is changed on the forum.

You must need to message our administrator but I doubt with this because a newbie or a newcomer and a lower profile rank member requesting to have a new username.
I think it takes a lot of time before they entertain you.
Also if you don't want your username you can create a new account because multiple accounts are not prohibited right here on our forum but you just need to follow the rules like the ban invasion is prohibited into our forum.

Also why you need to change your username are there any issues?
One of the reasons why changing usernames is not featured on this forum to prevent creating a large scam to other members.

I want to change my name because a lot of people follow my old name and I don't like that.

Do you understand?

Yes, I understand what you mean. What can people connect with you?
Is your reputation not entirely clean? Is not it? Everything can be fixed, you just need to change the nickname. Right?

I looked at your post history. I do not see any information compromising you. You are an ordinary, most ordinary bounty hunter. In addition to the most common reports in the bounty, and a few dozen more empty messages, you have nothing.

But besides that, there are a couple more facts that you may not like.
The first is a post from @Nutildah. Your name appears there. Unpleasant right? But the facts speak for themselves

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5237690.msg54155459#msg54155459

The second is a post from @reza7777. And then your nickname shines in a not very good format.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5277113.msg55341714#msg55341714

I can assume that the one who gave you the merit has some connection with you. He also has a red trust from @Lauda, @Nutildah, @Rikafip

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=2515710

In general, all the information about you is not very beautiful. And considering how difficult it is for bounty hunters today to acquire one merit, then changing a nickname is an excellent way to go out into life with a clean face.
