Title: [RANT] 1Tb SD card on Amazon for £9.99
Post by: Jet Cash on October 10, 2020, 08:23:38 AM
I'm planning to run a Bitcoin node on something like a Raspberry Pi, so I started to look for high capacity SD cards, and I found this one on Amazon
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gentai-Designed-Android-Smartphones-Tablets/dp/B08FDLXL46/ref=sr_1_13?dchild=1&keywords=1tb+sd+card&qid=1602316988&sr=8-13
The price has come down from £30 I understand, and before you rush off to buy one. Have a look at this video -

It seems these cards are old, low capacity ones, that have been modified to appear to have !Tb of memory, but probably only have 1Gb or so. They have been on Amazon for some time, and I'm surprised that Amazon doesn't do something to block such sales. Some of them even have 5 star ratings that are obviously fake. A 1Tb Sandisk Extreme card is about £300, so a card for £10 is obviously a scam.

Remember - If it looks too good to be true, then it probably isn't.

It definitely seems too low cost to be real, especially when HDD for computers at 1TB costs more.

I found 512GB for $99.99, this one also has over 80,000 reviews at 5 stars:

Shipping fees are a bit high on that, and you may have to pay an import duty. Sandisk is a good reliable make, and the 512Gb card dropped in price when they brought out the 1Tb

It's much easier to spot such scams back when SSDs/ flash drives were pretty expensive to begin with. Now we have to check on the store ratings or use common sense since there's no way such capacity could be that dirst cheap.

And don't forget graphic cards, those are harder to spot!
