Title: Get Miners from China while avoiding the Tariff?
Post by: betajuice on October 14, 2020, 12:39:32 AM
Most mining machines are made in China, so despite the tariff, it's still hard to avoid buying from China without just quitting mining all-together.

However, I have noticed some of the machines are put together in Malaysia, and I have not received a tariff bill for those machines yet.

Is there a way to verify which machines are manufactured outside of China as a way to reliably avoid this tariff?

Also wondering if there is any other way to avoid paying this upcharge on miners from China, thanks for any advice.

Legally buy Malaysia built.

You can email bitmain to ask them where the miner will come from.

Folks have tried that in the past...usually they just don't answer...but heck, it may be worth a shot.

Buying Malaysia built gear ⚙️ to avoid usa trump tax is gray.

I honestly am not sure if it is subject to Trump tax or not subject to the Trump tax.

I do know that the  trump tax is not charged.

One reason I don’t buy ten new s19pros at 24000k price is fear of trump tax.

I would hate to pay 6 to 8 k on that and since I do pay New Jersey sales taxes of 7%.

A 24000 order is at least 1680 in New Jersey taxes and a possible 6 or 7 k more in Trump tax.

When I do order from bitmain I do one two or three units. Mostly because I fear getting stuck a ton of tax.

I have never been told ahead of time where the gear comes from. So I never know if I am to pay

just 7% NJ tax and 2% standard import tax.

or 7% NJ tax and 25-30% trump tax.

If it's actually built in Malaysia to US Customs standards, then it is not gray. I don't think millions of $ of gear coming in from Malaysia would go unnoticed. If it was not up to the standards we would have heard about it by now.

But the OP's original question is getting miners from China without paying the tariff, which is not gray. That would be illegal. Doing that on a big enough scale would probably land you in jail.

About emailing Bitmain about where the gear is coming from, I've had the same experience Searing had, no response. Unless you are buying $100K+ worth of miners, not likely to get an answer. I have been able to get miners from Malaysia through group buys that my host has facilitated.

Yeah. for me if I get trump tax in full 25% DHL bill it out to me I pay with a cc and it certainly gets forwarded to New Jersey. so 25%+7% is a 32% tax.

For that alone buying direct from bitmain is very difficult to figure cost.

ie. does 10,000 in cost gear me

10,000
 2,500 trump tax  China
    700 NJ tax
13,200

or does it cost

10,000
    300 standard tax Malaysia
    700 NJ Tax
11,000

big difference

if it were s19

I could get 5 for the price of 6 if I am stuck trump tax
or
I could get 6 for the price of 6 if I pay Malaysia tax

Since I get 30 pieces a year. It means 30 vs 36   s19  units.

Do what I and some others here do and have your miners shipped to a hosting facility outside the USA.

No connections...and I know some guys that did so with such in Russia who don't even have a sack of rocks to show for it.

There are some Chinese American's that speak the language and are on top of such for China Miners there..but 'alas' don't have the connections to trust/verifiy and send BTC to such. :(

Are there high import tariffs from the EU to US?

Afaik the EU (and likely the UK when we leave the EU but potentially not the EU after that point) I think have a free tariff on printed circuits as atm chips seem to still be manufactured in the uk and a lot of Board come from China and Japan.. You might find a facility in Iceland or somewhere also with cheap electricity?

Someone mentioned that as long as the miners are made in China, it doesn't matter where do they ship from, the tariff will still have to be paid, so unless the gears are made in Malaysia nothing "legal" can be done to avoid the tariff, not sure if that applies to both new and used mining gears.

You might find a facility in Iceland or somewhere also with cheap electricity?

I think better deals are found in China, the electricity cost in China is cheaper and you don't actually have to pay any import tax or even international shipping, finding the right facility that can be trusted isn't easy at all, but there are plenty of them.

if it was 'easy' to find decent places in china everyone would be doing it along with me....by the time maintence fees and the rest are included it comes out to 9c kWh. so is a no go to me or places with 'big' names i've tripped over "supposedly".

if you knew the language and had connections, perhaps, but there are guys I know who did this a few years ago in Russia and they don't even have a box of rocks to show for their BTC/Crypto.
