Title: Lost password for MEW wallet
Post by: jesterdance on November 07, 2020, 01:56:15 AM
Hi everybody. So, I know i f**ed up, I had a rig for about a year that were mining to my wallet and havnt been using this adress for 2 more years, and now I cannot find my folders with a password anywhere on a drive (used a lot of recovering programs - no luck). Its only 4.2 ETH (and around 98% of 0.2 mined) but I really could use that money now. I know that MEW dont recover any lost passwords, but may be someone can provide me with any usefull info about what I can do about it? Thx

Password to get access your wallet, do you use JSON file as your backup?

I think you can try to load your JSON file and try different password you can remember. Try it offline. I think your ability to remember, try and get correct password is low.

I got this trouble too and I recommend you to use mnemonic seed as back up for you future wallet on Myetherwallet.

With seed, you don't need to have password and it can be easier to recover with some inaccurate seeds.

Without the backup and the password, your funds are pretty much gone. Sorry.

If you haven't formatted your drive though, try to dig really deep and look for it as your backup might just be mixed up with all your files. Use file recovery programs if you have to, as you might have deleted the backup file.

Something very similar almost happened to me few months ago, also for MEW wallet.I couldnt find neither password or json file because i didnt use that wallet for more than a year and i had a little bit less than 1 eth there.I checked both my desktop pc and laptop file by file,it took me half the day luckily i managed to recover it.

My point is,dont give up,keep searching it can always happen that you missed that folder with passwords as it happened to me.

If there's no choice left anymore, I can think of one option that you can try. But this will only work if you have created a restore point 2+ years ago.
  • System Restore

This you could do if you managed to create a restore point before but if not I don't think you can still access it. If you don't have the Mnemonic Phrase or Json file I'm pretty sure you won't be able to recover them.

Although it's been long I used MEW but I can remember that it uses private keys among others, so if you have that private keys, you can import it in another wallet like Trust wallet or Imtoken to access the content therein, I also remembered doing something like that with MEW years ago. During wallet creation, the most important I believe is your private keys, your mnemonic phrases etc, with them you can easily import in any other wallet app; just like Imtoken, password is used to protect your wallet against someone else accessing it without your consent, while other wallet app do not need it, meaning that, the most important is your private keys etc.
So just try it out.

OP mentioned that he tried different recovery programs and no help from it so I think he is having no chance to recover those files and he is not sure that he even deleted it or not.

But the reality is there is no way to access the wallet without the recovery seed or Json file with password so he can consider that he lost the ethereum permanently.

So you do talk about a folder on your drive with password? If thats still your old HD then you might make use of some recovery services incase you do delete it
but if you do pertain about MEW wallet password then  thats one of a hell of a big problem. Chances of recovery is almost 0%.
This is why we should really be keen and careful on storing up these sensitive information specially its the main thing for us to access our wallets.
Once you've lost it then say goodbye into  your coins.

Care has to be taken with such articles. They always prey on desperate people and use that to their advantage to scam. I am not sure how reputable the person behind the article is but I wouldn't trust sending any Keystore file for them to crack the password. What if they manage to crack the password and never return the Ether

This is what they said
Quote
"We also provide a password recovery service, and we would be happy to take your Keystore file along with your password guesses and run millions of variations to find your password.  Contact us if you’d like more information"

Unfortunately MEW can't help any lost/forgotten password as you can read on here

https://i.ibb.co/wKNz56S/IMG-20201109-071056.jpg

All you can do is try to remember where was the JSON file you have saved when you created the MEW

reference : https://kb.myetherwallet.com/en/security-and-privacy/lost-private-key/

Don't trust any link or site which telling you they can recover your password, they are only trying to scam you.

4.2 ETH is huge money, it's not "only". Its worth more than $1800 for now. Hope you can find the JSON file on your PC/phone

yeah we always find this while opening our MEW so i think OP is already aware of this but thanks for sharing anyway.

Exactly what He need to be aware because for Sure there are someone now that PMming Him regarding this matter and offering service
and will ask for some funds for fees or something in return, never deal with those.

18 hundred dollars is a Big Money for people like us as small investors that's why OP is seeking for that recovery.

Yes, the restore point is needed. We don't know if op did it, who knows if someone like him is doing that by accident.
Even if you are having JSON file but when you were loosing or forget your password and you can't recover your wallet. System restore will be only affecting the system to restore it at the time when he was ever writing his password but what about if he never backup it. It's a good idea to try to recover the folder that contains his password.
If he's too desperate doing that, it's just an option and sees if there's a good or no result at all.

Think again maybe you have stored some backup in a place where you can paste your private keys.

Two years may be a long time but I am sure that time you arleady learn how to secure your wallet since we have many instructions now given on the web when searching .unless you are still noob that time that you only stored it in your PC ,if you can't find any other backup you can considered that 4.2 eth as lost money  and there is no other way to recover it back.

If you don't have private key or json file or recovery seed of wallet, your money will be lost

if you lost all the possible way to login on your eth wallet , i'll say that you wont get your money back.  Didnt come on your mind that you should made a backup of your json or privatekey? If you truly aware you will make a backup or else its not important to you
