vessel collided with a ship in the busy Houston Ship Channel and leaked about a fifth of its cargo into the waterway.

incompetent morons.

These fuckers need to be jailed. No one will see bars though, as we all know.

How can you jail someone for an unfortunate accident unless there was gross negligence?

While it is to the justice to prove, and the people on those ships have the right to the presumption of innocence, two ships colliding nowadays is mostly due to incompetence and human mistake (the speed, the radar technology, the priorities .....)

Two vessels collided while having access to today's modern location and guidance technology. Clearly there was gross negligence at some point.

Accidents happen. Technology can also fail.

Someone definitely flexing there retard strength.  I'm tired of the defending of stupid mistakes which seems to be common these days.  Somebody messed up someone needs to pay period.

Tell that to the captain(s) who got fired.

I wonder why it took from the 20th to the 24th for this video to be published. I wonder what was published first, my thread or this video. Ironically at the beginning of the video she speaks of the "eco system". Creepy.

Thing that bothers me, is that there's a need to move these oil rigs around, while it could be avoided.

Country A can get it's own oil, but it's cheaper to buy it from a country B.
They waste 5% of that oil to propel their vessels.
Another 15% to keep up this trading mechanism in order.
Another 5% for damage control, and legal issues when shit ensues.
Etc. Etc. Etc.
Some point in the future Country B runs out of oil, and starts to buy it from Country A.

We should try to move things as little as possible.
In your local grocery stores, there's tomatoes from 5 different suppliers, 5 different cars waste gas bringing those tomatoes to you every week.
And don't get me started on the fact that AT LEAST 30% of those tomatoes will rot and end up as a waste.

Guy going to work as a janitor in a office 10km from home, while he has plenty of similar jobs available around him.

You get my idea.

Borderline, but it could be partially done in a modern democratic society. For example - with that janitor bit - he could get state benefits for lessening load on public transportation. Or earning some kind of "go green" points, which he could later spend as money. Not force people, but encourage them.
And with tomato bit, maybe not so drastically, but still impose some regulation on supermarkets waste amount, so they plan better. I could not believe how much stuff they throw out, before I saw it with my own eyes.

How can you jail someone for an unfortunate accident unless there was gross negligence?

90% of time, accidents occur due to the incompetence / negligence of the person who is navigating the vessel / vehicle. Sometimes, it can occur due to incompetence / negligence from the owner of the vehicle / vessel, such as failing to provide adequate maintenance.

Nope, my power company uses renewable energy, and I don't own a car. I rarely go by bus either.

It's reassuring to know that the Earth has been trough ridiculously worse trials (glaciations, mass meteorite bombardmends, huge change in composition of atmospheric gazes, horrible heat distribution because of the unification of the continents, etc.)
The only one we are hurting with this, is the human race.

No. It affects the entire eco-system. Not just the humans. On the other hand, humans have the capability to adapt (due to the improving technology). But other living forms won't be able to adapt and they'll become extinct.

Yes, many will become instinct, human intelligence is actually a cause of mass-extinction, and don't get me wrong I think it's a shame.
But in a thousands of year evolution's capacity of adaptation is even better than how we can adapt with technology.
Some species have survived conditions worse than what we are doing to them. Nature always finds away, and I've less faith in the human race for that.

Funny - if you kill a man you go to jail to be fried
if you kill an antire species, nobody gives a fuck
