Hello guys...I just want to share with you what happened two days ago. The typhoon Ulysses has ravaged our country especially in our area that time. At the middle of the night where we experienced strong winds and rain when we suddenly lose electric power and at the same time lose internet connection. After a whole night of strong winds and rain, there was high flooding elsewhere but I thank God that we were not flooded in the area where we live. Many people  affected by the flood are asking for immediate help and relief because they are at risk of being flooded. Many friends and relatives are worried but sadly because there was no communication at those times. There is no electricity, no internet, and the signal for mobile network is very weak. You can't connect to anyone because all online connection are down for more than 24hours and even now other places which very affected still no have power supply. I have Ethereum in my wallet and I want to cash out and exchange fiat money to spend and buy our foods but I can’t because there is no electricity anywhere and even the remittance center are affected and cannot process the transaction. You can't even buy food and other necessities online. The situation is very difficult.

Electricity, Internet and Mobile Network are the major important to consider for all online transactions and communications because we are in a new generation which almost everyone uses a computer, phones, and other gadgets which also needs electricity and internet connection. It will further affect our economy and digital currency, business establishments will not be able to operate and transact, those with online jobs will not be able to work, we will not be able to trade, invest, and use bitcoin and other digital currency and crypto currency will become worthless.

It is concerning that our society is relying progressively more on electricity, but that is a must in order to harness the power of technology.

Bitcoin is based on the internet so a world wide blackout would surely damage the network.

There are ways to counter this, though. I'm sure researchers will develop battery tech in the next few years to the level that we might power entire houses with mergency baterries held underground or something similar.

Regarding communication networks signal I heard some parties are working on implementing satellite acces to internet for the whole world. That shouldn't be too far away.

Flooding of coastal areas due to erratic weather patterns is going to increase with time as climate scientists have been warning for a long time. We have already seen how things have taken a turn for the worst when it comes to weather related calamities. People living along coastal areas are going to have to be extra careful and ready themselves for such situations.
Calamities have always been a part of human life and as humans we just adapt. A large section of people still want to deny climate change and just say that it is part of earth's cycles. Cycles or not, one thing is sure that we will have to make communities more resilient till enough can be done to avoid long term climate disaster. 

We already have many alternative sources of energy to use electricity from the grid. Without electricity we can use generators, using solar batteries to charge devices.
The problem of mobile networks will become easier after Elon Musk makes the satellite internet available worldwide. Disruption of the connection to the internet only happens for a short time and they are not of concern. The world has millions of people investing and using crypto so maintaining the blockchain network's continuity is a certainty.

I do think that the government needs to apply some renewable sources here in play. If your region does have high wind capacity I do believe that that can be used in a favour. If the region is experiencing floods then I believe that it can very easily be converted into a dam with a set up of water electricity which can be generated very easily. Now what it would require is :

Yes this is true that cryptocurrencies do need electricity as a means of getting well all along but at the same time if we do want to use it we have to actually adapt to the situation.
Weather related calamities are actually something very normal, it will happen for sure , but what you guys can do is be well prepared in advance till the things settle down.

Yes, new technology always has its weaknesses but you must know that if you are determined to make money on any online platform then you must build a backup plan for network outages. Although knowing that the incident you have just experienced is a natural disaster and we cannot expect it, you should move your office or workplace to cities with network security.  yah, to make a lot of money you also need to invest in a solid foundation. :)

We are getting highly dependent on electricity day by day. Though now we have many options like a solar panel, generator, etc. We can charge our devices through those things.

Internet and mobile network is relatively connected. The mobile network is getting high speed nowadays in a remote area too. I am from one of the poorest countries in the world, here I am almost satisfied with the network which is provided.

That's one of the challenges that we are facing now that we become more dependent on technology. With this kind of calamity, technology helps us to easily communicate with others, as well as asking for help and it's very crucial when these main resources are down when we need it the most.


Well, sad to say that most of the people affected by the typhoon, or those who badly need means of communication cannot have these alternatives because it costs a lot and most of the victims are the poor ones. The Philippines is a third world country, it may be a good investment to have these alternatives but they can't afford it.

A geomagnetic storm could cause hard to any electronic device, this might result to trillions of damages around the world.

How about an offline communication? I think we should more focused on this one rather than relying to uncertain stuffs like the internet or signal towers, and this might cost lesser.

Technologies were a great help to us day by day, through communications we made it easier to contact each one of us through the invention of gadgets. Moreover, sending money through the internet was very popular until such then bitcoin was found and that is the part of our innovative tools that we used until now. I think that's one of the main disadvantages of a cashless economy, which is its dependency on electricity and network. Basically even if government can't control Bitcoin and blockchain directly, they will control it through monitoring network and electricity supply. Really something concerning if we want a cashless economy and dominance of Bitcoin over fiat!

Yes let us consider those who don't have electricity in their communities, those who often get power outrage, not all the people in the world or not all countries have electricity in their whole vicinity. And yes internet problems. So I think full cashless in the whole country or whole world is impossible, fiat will not be replaced it will still be there.

i believe what ampu is implying here is if we don't have electricity coming from the regular grid, we have other options to avail electricity via generators and other renewable energy sources.
but someone mentioned bout worldwide blackout, dont think that will happen because we have a lot of alternative energy sources. we are not relying from the electrical grid alone.


anyway, dont think that the global population will go for cashless anytime soon. only few cities or countries can really implement this system, and expect not 100% as there will be some hiccups along the way.

It should be amusing to see the media cover such an event - oh wait they are so reliant on electronics and mass disinformation that they wouldn't be able to control the narrative. If people thought covid was a nightmare imagine something like a large volcano going off or as noted a large CME wiping out most of the surface electronics.

The planet has minimal contingencies for this. It's hard to pull up the schematics for a new power plant when all your information is on a computer that no longer has power because the power plant you're trying to build is needed to power the computer. Catch 22. Only paper writings and that in our skulls will be useful after such an event.

Such perfect example why a 3rd world country ain't ready yet and still far from implementation of a cashless society, and how necessary fiat currency is. The same example why fiat currency won't be phased out.

Computers and mobile phones won't help us much when we're looking to finance ourselves to buy basic necessities in times of disaster like the OP mentioned, specially when you're dealing with cryptocurrency which rely on internet connection.

It is a very sad situation when the times of hurricanes and typhoons are approaching, especially in this time of pandemic. The recent happenings brought by the typhoon Ulysses on the country of Philippines have been very tragic and disastrous that up until now many are still left and have not been rescued due to the floodings brought by the typhoon and the sudden release of the water coming from the dam which brought up into the worst scenario where lives and properties have been destroyed. With regards to electricity, internet and mobile networks, all of those have been affected because signal towers as well as electrical posts have been cut to prevent accidents due to electrical current that is fast flowing on bodies of water. This might be very challenging to loose those essentials specially at times like this for those are really needed in terms of communication and asking for help of course. This brings into attention how we people must care for our nature to somehow lessen the cases of something like this to happen.

Its just rare occasion and it may never happen in future once we are fully adopt to the digital currency system because by that time most of the places will be using solar panels to produce electricity which means less chance to face power failure throughout a larger area which also means there will be availability of internet for 24/7. And to be honest we can never find a perfect solution for natural calamities and by that time even if we have fiat money to spend we may not be able to find a product due to less availability.

Mix that with an incompetent government, you will have a recipe for disaster. I can say that because I live in that country and the way they handle disaster management is laughable at best, the only one who does something is the VP despite criticism from the presidential. I have lost my faith in the current administration in my country. I do not think that calamities should not be a part of life, that is a BS to further enable inaction towards problems, if there is a way to prevent it why not act on it.

This is just sad.

I know that a lot of people need help but in this case, Electricity and Internet connection is not that needed, for me what they needed is Moblie Network as they need to communicate and also needed to be updated although in some places it is not available. Right now, what they needed most is food, shelter, and clothes.

One thing for sure is that sometimes technologies can be of no help when the power of nature is taking its tools. There is no way for anyone to communicate when there is no power and internet access and telecommunications are down. We are all under the mercy of nature. Humanity has made so many advancements in the past many millennia but right now we are facing many changes that can be affecting human survival...and no cryptocurrency can be of help when there is no way to ask for help. This is a big reality we have to face. I am quite lucky that Ulysses shied away from my location and landed instead in the northern part of the country. Sadly the damage is quite huge with many losing their livelihood and properties due to water inundation.

In times like this, emergency services come in and they provide temporary services. So there will be disruption for a short while and then basic services will be restored. Also remember, Banks and ATM's and cash registers and credit card machines work with electricity too... so when things like this happens... even these services are affected.

Crypto currency users and small businesses also owns generators, so some of them will be able to provide their own services.  ;)  The Bitcoin nodes are also distributed globally... so it will not bring down the whole network. (Blockchain)  ;D

Pity the people who were so affected by the typhoon that they did not even save anything, all their hard work just disappeared they don't even know how they can recover after this disaster. My place is one of the center area where the typhoon landed, and we are so lucky enough because our place is high so we were not flooded. I don't think it's dependence, but basic necessities. We live in a digital era where electricity and the internet are the main support for human activities.
We should stop depending on the government for resources that do not guarantee that they will always be available and create resources independently, especially during an emergency.

To have EASY access to all things, we should rely on those things you've mentioned such as electricity, internet, devices and more. But when it comes to typhoons and earthquakes, it can definitely destroy those when occur that's why we should be more ready and develop our technology until it became uninterruptable. In that case, we can have continuous communications in emergencies and we can call for rescue even there's an interruption. The Country in context was not mentioned,so I cant tell how wealthy the country may be. Natural disaster sometimes are unavoidable in some countries, some are prone to a particular disaster, so Government can only reduce the effect not eliminate the event. it can take adequate measure from government to disseminate climate news, provide climate sustainable programs and improved technology (which are very expensive) to prevent big loss and gravity of event.

Yeah! You're right, we need to protect the nature because if nature is destroyed, we will be the ones to suffer the most.

I think we're living in the same country and I honestly experienced the same hardship because of the typhoon as well. Maybe, it's easy for others to say that we should be prepared for calamities and we should have our back up but during electricity outrage, we usually prioritize lighting. Ulysses was a strong typhoon and it still has a huge impact in most parts of the country. No matter how important electricity, the internet, and mobile network are, during typhoons here, our main goal is to survive.

Solar energy is heat and light energy, we are just looking to convert them into electricity. Like wind energy, water currents, waves, more than water, they all convert to electricity.
The world is using electricity to operate the world and we need to recognize that. Cryptocurrency is just a solution to the payment so it will coexist with classical finance and their products such as cash, checks, money orders.

All this can be avoided if you have some basic backups. For instance, it's really easy to run wifi from a portable generator, just as it is easy to run LTE with just one small diesel unit. In case of a typhoon like the one OP had mentioned, one could have a series of foldable solar panels that can be shut down and covered in case of bad weather. Also, underground power lines remain unaffected by weather conditions.

We are not even prepared for this kind of calamity. The government is already struggling with this situation and it is doubled by people taking shots at them. This is the reason why we can actually say that we are still not ready when it comes to making our transactions online or maybe using bitcoin. We are still far from it being there.

This is a big problem in the under development countries, power generation having big crises in asian countries major like Pakistan where authorities having shut down of electricity many times in a day and this is disturbing, their citizens life badly because for power generation they have to use the generator which requires petrol and everyone cant afford generators and petrol expenses as well. everyone is not using Solar because of batteries and solar higher cost. Power generation is a big problem there. In some religious events authorities shut down the cellular services as well.

What I've realized after our province here in the Philippines was hit by so many strong typhoons is that no matter how far we have got in the terms of technology and in the society, we'll still go back to the old life which has no internet, electricity, and electronics, since those 3 that you had mentioned are coexisting. Without the electricity, both gadgets and internet are useless.

But, even without those 3, we can still start a new beginning, what we don't need to do is to expect to have instant action on fixing the electricity post while there's still ravaging flow of water flooding the whole city and provinces. We have to be patient and understanding since rescuers and other part of the LGUs are just people who have limited capability to handle loads of works.

But, above all. I can't deny that we have a very incompetent president. Electricity is the most important good these days. Almost all of the current gadgets we use in the developed world need electricity to run. The most important advancements we make here is in my opinion solar energy and better batteries. Even the most remote village in Africa with no infrastructure or access to a power plant can produce their own local energy with solar panels. Having electricity at home creates so many opportunities for people that it should be our goal to give every human in this planet access to it.

This is the path bitcoin needs to take and what we are missing out right now. There are a ton of places that can accept QR code payments nowadays which requires all three of these things, electricity, internet and mobile network because with these things you are getting what you want for QR code payments. At the end of the day if we can pay with QR code that means we could have bitcoin (or crypto in general) apps that could allow us to keep our bitcoin while paying with our mobile phone apps with the code without ever turning our coins into fiat currency.

We are doing crypto prepaid cards nowadays and that is not what we should be focusing on, that technology will be old news very soon and focusing our resources into that would not be a smart move by us, focus on mobile apps instead.

Typhoons these days seem stronger than the usual typhoons that we experienced before. The damage is too huge and I think that's because people abused the environment too much. also My powerbanks is always full charge so if ever things like this happens my family is ready for at least 3 days of having a electricity .
depend if you are not living 100% of those ,still there are  people that loves living in no electricity and internet and have no even Cellular phones.

These things are important specially the electricity. Unfortunately those places hit by the typhoon were unable to communicate to their loved ones because of having low battery and cant charge their phone.

I think lack of preparedness is one of the reason on why it happened. We can avoid this unfortunate situation if people or the government are aware of the possible aftermath since its a super typhoon. Evacuation at an early stage to be safe is a must but I think they didnt expect this to cause a worst situation wherein some people died and missing.

Like the electricity connection in the developed world the internet or satellite connection is also provided to the home or office by drawing a line under the road if there is no electricity then internet connection will be disconnected. Everything is done through the internet without the internet it would not be possible to do everything including crypto. I think you missed the point of his statement. It's true you can't predict 1 year ahead that a storm is going to occur on such and such date, but it is quite obvious to most people that certain locations on Earth are much more treacherous than others. Data centers do this planning well ahead of being deployed. As do military installations, banks, new/broadcasting agencies, and anybody else putting sizable infrastructure down on the ground. Sailing out to sea off the California coast is not as dangerous Sea of Hoces.

It's confusing to watch those people in New Orleans scramble each year as a hurricane approaches and the residents discover that being below sea level right next to the coast is not a good place to be.

i can feel your sentiments here mate because for the first time i experienced that same matter in which the Power was cut about 1 am and runs till 10 in the evening ,and the sad part is even my powerbank has been drained and forgot to charge back that day.
When i need to update my family and friends because of that alarming Typhoon .

I think better to be always ready,Now i bought 3 powerbanks for reserve and will only be used in emergency and also thinking of transferring to strategic location sooner.

It is true that now we are in the digital era, where the internet and smartphones are the main things that must be fulfilled. And both of them
are very dependent on electricity, so life will not run without a combination of Electricity, Internet and smartphones. Because a lot of economic
activity takes place online, especially the pandemic situation forcing many people to finally work from home. This means that it requires Electricity,
Internet and smartphones so that the economy can run well. Therefore, choose a location to live that can be reached by the Internet and

I think If cryptocurrency private keys in different denominations had been safely printed and sealed on durable materials by trustworthy companies , crypto people would have been able to exchange them with one another in their community during such disasters. When the Internet, Electricity, Mobile Network are back they can then scratch off the seal to verify the keys on Global crypto Network.
Or they could use things like NFTs(in physical form esp) to find basic needs like foods, water, herbs etc in hidden locations for healing and survival.


There are countries where you find lots of people generating their own electricity, they could survive in  situations where there is breakdown of National electricity supply. And that could help them power their mobile devices and use some sort of local Blockchain/network to transact with one another. There should always be backup electricity generators just incase

Everyone also connected to the internet in someway, if there is a blackout or network down in certain area the whole city will stop working, but anyway with the development we still can resolve all those things as quick as possible.

Imagine a scenario where kids and young men overwhelm barriers and things that protect society's infrastructures, and no one can easily go in and fix things. That's the kind of situation People, Nations and Crypto communities should be preparing for. You try to survive independently or with communities that are able to gather safely together to sustain themselves.
I think it's better to find a means to survive locally first,  Our regular mobile phones/devices could help in  this regard. Once a community has been safely established somewhere, you can then look for safe ways to link up with international communities

Indeed, Bitcoin is closely related to electricity, the internet and computers, one of which is not available, it is impossible for us to access Bitcoin.
That's why many people say Bitcoin is difficult to kill, because to be able to kill Bitcoin, we have to turn off electricity or the internet.
Both of which are very important for human life, meaning that it is absolutely impossible to kill Bitcoin.
