Title: What is the biggest threat to Bitcoin?
Post by: chretienm on November 24, 2020, 10:40:27 AM
Everybody looks so happy and optimistic about Bitcoin bull rally, everything is going fine for the crypto king and many expect it to last forever including myself. Do you really think so? I'm not talking about some corrective retracement, which is healthy for the market too.
What do you think can be the biggest threat for Bitcoin in current situation? In my opinion it can be only some sudden governments shift in regulations and laws to ban Bitcoin (which I don't really think may happen), otherwise there are basically no obstacles or threats.

These sentiments are common during the bullish trend. I can assure you that correction will occur at one time and drop in prices will occur.

Now governments crack down on crypto is bad for the price but it causes a sudden drop in price if significant enough, not a more organic gradual drop of price which commonly occurs as small retail sellers are dumping their coins.

Now being pessimistic about price will not have any good effect from your side. Wait for prices to correct if you are looking to buy.

It is also difficult to state in one sentence what can be possibly a threat, government problems, legal issues are few. But there are many more.

The current situation looks more than good, many did not hope that BTC would reach the previous ATH before the end of this year, and that is very likely at the moment. Given the overall economic situation in the world, I think that BTC is quite safe at the moment, because it is becoming an increasingly important player in the financial markets, and at the same time helps numerous people to survive these difficult times.

If we are talking about a possible ban, the worst that can happen is that crypto exchanges are banned - of course in the US and the EU, which are perhaps the strongest markets. And we all know that it would then put a lot of pressure on the rest of the world to do the same, and it would only be a matter of time before BTC became something that is difficult or impossible to trade.

However, I do not believe that something like this will happen (especially in the current time), because BTC does not pose a danger to anyone with its still relatively small market share.

Bitcoin is too powerful than government to just ban it, if otherwise, why are the governments getting acquainted with bitcoin but only want to know ways to just make sure people make use of it safely. Just know that even countries that ban bitcoin for now will still legalize bitcoin in the future.

Bitcoin is just a decentralized currency that people are getting to know more daily, and even the people that supoosed to ban it are getting to liking it. I have looked at many reasons why bitcoin should be banned, the only good reason I saw is ignorance, which is not a good reason anyway. Bitcoin is just money and asset which supposed to be legalized all over the world.

Yeah, the market share is still small and it's not taken seriously yet but it will grow. So, no real threats, just bright future for bitcoin, very predictable. Thanks for welcome, yeah long time, too bad I don't keep my bitcoins from that time, didn't take it seriously either :((

The biggest threat to the bitcoin is "US" because we are the one who are buy and sell bitcoin and also who are panicking so we are the cause also if the bitcoin dump and that is my opinion. Im hapoy and for sure many of us are what bitcoin already achieved this year and I think we will become more happy this time because we are near to the $20k per bitcoin.

In my opinion, the biggest threat to Bitcoin is hackers and also permission from the government. These hackers can take the Bitcoin that we have. while the government has full control over what happens to the economic turnover of the country. And this also stings Bitcoin as an investment asset.

The hackers are a threat only for the centralized cryptocurrency exchange platforms and some online cryptocurrency wallets. They aren't a threat for the blockchain.
The government can be seen as threat for the future of the cryptocurrencies, but I think that it is way better for the governments to keep crypto trading legal and gather taxes from the crypto traders, rather than trying to destroy the crypto economy while getting zero tax revenue from the crypto traders and users.

I think the biggest threat for Bitcoin is Government Negligence. All government want to trace all transection. But Bitcoin transection always hidden. Government’s  think many crime happened by using Bitcoin. So government want to avoid Bitcoin. That's why i think Government's are main threat for Bitcoin.

Few people then took Bitcoin as something serious, and even a few years later the situation was not much better in this regard. It was only after 2017 that there was a change in the sense that people realized what potential lies in Bitcoin, although many will only realize this in the period to come.

It's hard to say that you shouldn't regret a missed opportunity, but if you just imagine what it will be like 10 years from today - you have a new chance to be a part of something that has yet to shine in full splendor.

i think we're way past that point where a govt would try to ban bitcoin. The governments who wanted to ban it already did it

Aside from those crappy govt, the rest of the governments are not stupid, when they see billion dollar companies like Square[1] (https://decrypt.co/44319/square-invests-50-million-in-bitcoin) and Paypal investing and adopting BTC respectively, or the big boys in Wall Street[2] (https://cointelegraph.com/news/stealth-phase-over-why-wall-street-fomo-will-make-20k-bitcoin-look-cheap) getting ready to fully enter the market, they know it's time to embrace BTC.

If at one point everyone stops investing in bitcoin, if governments step up the fight against crypto, or something else. Bitcoin is not all-powerful, but we will fight.

If the government see Bitcoin as a threat they will really make a way to stop and regulate it. But the truth is, no one can have the full control over Bitcoin, as long as you have internet, you have all the ability to do what you want with it. There are case that IP address are banned, but you can now easily change your IP address. With that being said, you can have it secretly even the government doest allow it.

I think the only threat is the misinformation about Bitcoin, if people will not be justly orriented and educated about it, people will have good impression. We are seeing lots of misleading information from mainstream media from the last years, and it affects Bitcoin since it all depend on the demand from the people.

Well, actually there is still a possibility for other governments to do so, if there will be a reason for such action.
Well, indeed, more countries are recognising this technology as years are passing by and now, a third party network which is being used across different countries adopted this technology. This would show development and progress. What I am quite scared of is that, this technology will now be more exposed and it means that more criticisms are possible to arise especially regarding to its market value (its price won't be consistently increasing, volatile is in nature) which again could give dent to this industry. I am not saying that sudden decrease will yield to total ban of this technology, but rather I want us to share our knowledge to other people on its true nature to avoid further misconceptions once things do not go with majority's expectations of this technology.

Why do people keep on thinking that the government can ban bitcoin? To ban bitcoin, they will have have to ban the central authority in their country. But bitcoin is decentralized and has no central authority. To ban bitcoin, the government will have to "ban everyone" that is helping the bitcoin network stay active which is impossible. If it was possible, wouldn't the government all around the world already put a ban on p2p torrenting? Secondly, the government can't suddenly tell its people to stop using bitcoin and abandon everything they have.

I think the government of a country cannot be a big threat to Bitcoin.  The government will never suddenly ban Bitcoin.  This can have an adverse effect on the government and the people of his country.  Because Bitcoin is very popular with the people.  So no country's government would ever want its popularity to decline.  I think the biggest threat to Bitcoin is hackers.  They could easily destroy the Bitcoin market.

I don’t know if there is still the 51% attack problem, it’s like that has been resolved or maybe not, but I have not been seeing any news about it lately or anyone talking about it. So, I wouldn’t count that as a threat. Right now, I think the number one threat would be the government.

Although before I don’t used to believe that the government can be a threat, but right with all the things that has happened in places like China, I’m starting to see them as a possible threat for Bitcoin. I have read stories on how the government in China has blocked up every means that miners can use to withdraw their earnings and are making it hard to exchange Bitcoin. Such a situation can discourage people from making use of Bitcoin.

Everyone is really happy this past days, the market is green and Bitcoin is making it more enjoyable and rewarding, however, just as the crypto market is, there will be corrective retracement wherein the prices will drop, also just like you, I don't see that as a threat but as market reactions. However, asking if the bull run will last forever, I don't think anyone can answer that question because no one can predict anything. On the other hand, about threats that Bitcoin will likely face, I think it will still come from the government. The reason is, market sentiment and emotions will always be there, and once the government says anything unfavorable to the market, people will react to it and the result will be seen in the market. Lastly, there is no way to ban Bitcoin now, because it has grown so much, so valuable, so strong and out of control of the government.

They can do it, if you are underestimating the capabilities of your cy then you are dead wrong, they have the ability to ban websites and services that are connected or even acquainted to bitcoin if they want. There might be some that will slip through the cracks but the witch hunt will be unforgiving if they want to and financial institutions will be in support of the government effort to eradicate traces of cryptocurrency because it is a threat to them ever since.

Uhm, no they can't, if you fully use how Bitcoin is supposed to work that is. And as for the government, no they don't have full control over the economy. I'd like to think of it as a partial control, but full control? Nope. Cause if so, then the progress would have been mostly positive all the time, and no recessions or what not could've happened. They at most could take advantage of disasters in the market to profit, but that's about it.

The chances of that happening are as close as what I thought of a threat is the death of the internet. Really, it isn't impossible, I agree, but what are the chances of it happening right? I'm pretty sure you're supposed to think of threat levels together with the chances of it happening.

I think everyone agrees that the government and its policies are a threat to the bitcoin movement. then added with the threat of internet hackers.
but here, let me add some other threats to bitcoin based on what I know, including:

first the miners and bitcoin users themselves, the reason is because if there is illegal transaction activity that takes advantage of bitcoin anonymity, it is synonymous with illicit trade.

the second is altcoins, the reason being that many cryptocurrencies have more features. such as litecoin or stellar which is currently dubbed a cryptocurrency that can steal the throne of cryptocurrency from bitcoin.

I think this feelings are common during any bull rally, everyone will just expect it to keep going up, but ofcourse retracement will surely occur, after that will keep surging ahead if there are more hypes  :D, but from what have learnt over the years in the crypto market is that,
Nothing goes up forever, it will just make an ATH, then bearish reversal will kick in, we can't expect it to go up forever.

At the moment I don't see anything that will pose a threat to bitcoin bull run apart from the government, cause just one news about bitcoin been banned in one world power country like the US, that will definitely stop the bull run we are in now.

Whenever the market turns bullish only the positive vibes were kept alive by the whales. This means the positive news only circulated avoiding the negative news. Maybe when the market turns bearish more speculation with the negative thoughts reach the market. We can't term anything to be a threat to bitcoin or the bitcoin network. It is the whales who make the market fluctuate. Even now if a huge fund is being transacted, automatically it'll be taken into speculation.

yes, one of the threats of bitcoin is that if the government issues a regulation to ban bitcoin, besides that I am also afraid if there is a paralysis of the internet network throughout the country.  all trading activity in the crypto market will stop so that bitcoin and altcoin can no longer be used.

The threat is from within. Either its users simply losing interest or enough participants hijacking it and throwing away it core principles. We see every single day people whining about fees and slowness when the reason for that is to maintain the reasons people are here in the first place.

Most people seem to want Paypal by another name and it's only the more informed and influential few who stop it from happening. Maybe one day they'll be overpowered or just leave in a huff.

As of now all of the major threat cannot stop the rising of the price of bitcoins in the market but with another new threat which is not on our current list, we will say it could stop the current progress of the price like what happened in the year 2018 where a Japanese exchange got hacked and the price of bitcoin has fallen since then. thankfully such an incident will not result in a price fall this year cause it has nothing to do with bitcoins anyway.

The only real threat to bitcoin is a competitor currency. So far there isn't any. Ethereum is the one which reaches closest to bitcoin and I think we can't even say it is a threat.
I'm pretty sure It will take a long time yet until a competitor appears, so bitcoin is safe to rule crypto universe. Another threats like bans and regulations don't bother me, because I believe bitcoin enthusiasts won't follow such restrictions if they happen. There are countries which are unfriendly to bitcoin, but others are friendly, what means enthusiasts can move themselves to these good countries if things go bad in theirs.

<snip>
The posibility of the governments regulating the trade of bitcoin to their country is indeed one of the biggest threat that Bitcoin might face. Regulating it might cause some serious downfall to bitcoin's adoption, it may cause rejection and might eventually lose some of it's value.

Other candidate big threat should be the effects of ALL bitcoins being mined, causing miners to rely on transaction fees as payment to their job. I think the tx fee for bitcoin on that time will increase dramatically since miners will rely on tx fees.

Panic selling is biggest thread to bitcoin price all the time.Because when the price reduced to 17,000$ from 19000$, most of the new traders had sold their holding less volume bitcoin at the maximum price they offered by the buyer. But it had affected the price of bitcoin further more and the price had reduced further and made below the 17,000$ and make a huge panic selling further.

I think institutions and whales are biggest threat to bitcoin as government or regulators will only make attempts to create panic among people by banning Bitcoin which is not possible at this moment but whales are already involved into Bitcoin share as they hold huge amount of Bitcoin using which they can steer the market price which will make it like a gambling so Bitcoin might somewhere lose it's decentralised nature when people or group can control it.

We were all interested by the story of Bitcoin when we first heard it. The unique properties and characteristics that blockchain technology has to offer have made a huge positive impact on the people who adopted it. Although there is a risk behind the unique bitcoin. And I think this risk makes a group of people do not want to use bitcoin any further. It’s the fact that the problems faced by cryptocurrencies can raise concerns. So for many people, these concerns can pose a threat and the government does not legalize cryptocurrencies.
But actually, this is not a threat, it might be more appropriate to say this is a concern. Or it’s up to people to interpret it.

The creation of strong computers like I do not know if it is possible but high chances due to fast growing technology we have today. As we can check a short background or history of the computer where it started so slow process and if we can compare nowadays in which there are strong computers already made. With strong computers bitcoin hashes or algorithm can easily be solved or puzzle in which miners are doing it for transaction confirmation. Now, if these computers will be created high chance it can defeat the current bitcoin system and gradually no one wi believe in bitcoin that if there will be strong computer created.

I think that lack of access to the internet and computing power are the main threats to Bitcoins. Everything other is just a temporary inconveniences.

Prices can be corrected, market can be influenced by numerous factors and threads be avoided, issues with government can be negotiated, attacks can be foreseen, predicted and avoided.

Biggest threat are those that take advantages of people who is new crypto, bitcoin have proven to be resilient to politics and whatever the government throws at it and a while back we have seen a new milestone and how crazy bitcoin can be, but there is also CBDC proposal which supposedly  act as a fiat currency for the country using it the project have been in discussion for years and are now conducting a test run on china.

I don't really the government regulations and laws is the biggest threat in bitcoin. This is not new as in some other country cyrptocurrency is banned but stil bitcoin is stronger and getting popular. It may affect but not the main factor of threat. I think we are people who are into bitcoin can affect  or will be considered as a threat to bitcoin because we are sometimes in panicked over the changes in price of bitcoin.

Basically bitcoin is decentralized and super secure so this is out of danger and  a bit of anxiety if the government of some country announced about the ban of bitcoin altogether. Then It can be a bit of downfall but as this is decentralized so it's fine and same commitment about the bitcoin from few country government is very rare so there is actually no threat for the bitcoin.

We always think that the government isn't benefiting from cryptocurrencies as a whole, but in fact, there are some good regulations already established by the governments around the world, they only differ to some extent such as the issues in India before why they banned the use of Bitcoin. But for those countries who have a broader view of what cryptocurrencies are and their benefits, it will solely depend on the people responsible for the law whether they should impose more regulation on it.

Going back, companies arise from all over the world that also focus on blockchain and crypto. And from that, the Government could still gain taxes not directly from the blockchain, but from the fees such as some centralized exchanges.

I think the threat to bitcoin is not really a cause for concern because only a handful are playing a role behind it and it doesn't go away, it's just that controlling the price might happen.
But as long as many communities like bitcoin, it will not be a threat if it is linked to the government, it is only legal or not, so it can be determined by the regulations.
The whales can be in control of the price but still they have thoughts of wanting higher prices in their own way.

The new cryptocurrency Unit-e, created by North American researchers, is several thousand times faster than Bitcoin. Therefore, it can become a new threat to Bitcoin.
A group of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford, and the University of California, Berkeley have developed a new cryptocurrency under the working name Unit-e. The project was funded by the non-profit organization Distributed Technology Research (DTR), which includes representatives of seven major us universities, and this was its first initiative. Pantera Capital, an investment blockchain Fund, also supported the development of the project.
The Unit-e virtual currency has managed to surpass Bitcoin, Etherium and other current tokens, although not yet in terms of value. The project developers managed to solve the problem with high system speed: the Unit-e network can process up to 10 thousand transactions per second.
Despite the promising cryptocurrency Unit-e and attempts to modernize existing transaction systems, the crypto market is still declining amid increased distrust of large investors.

Every little time some piece of FUD News comes out (FUD is acronym for fear, uncertainty and doubt) or something happens in the market and the market cap goes down a bit so many Amateur Investors who have probably invested to much money they can’t afford to lose, start to panic, make terrible decisions and it snowballs bringing the market cap every further down, then once they have lost all this money they complain about the market and cryptocurrency like it wasn’t even their fault that they lost their money in the first place, spreading more FUD around.

The centralized Authority is the biggest threat to bitcoin in my own opinion. There are many other threats to bitcoin like the environmental factors but I see the centralized Authority like the highest threat to bitcoin because in time of bullish government bitcoin might not be favored. It’s no longer a news to us that the centralized government is trying to take over bitcoin in some manner, like many banks are now buying bitcoin.

Bitcoin is in struggle with the centralized Authority because bitcoin is a decentralized currency and is becoming world most valuable digital currency and can be easily converted to fiat through many Cryptocurrency exchange platform.

Given that bitcoin is a decentralized system, the security of which mainly depends on the number of people willing to provide this security via using full nodes and mining nodes, I think the biggest threat to bitcoin is that people will suddenly decide they don't need a sovereign form of money, they don't need censorship-resistant mining and will start selling their freedom and privacy in exchange for convenience.

We think like that because that is what is the problem to us as bitcoin users. But think deeply is that everything that is holding back bitcoin from mainstream coverage in a more positive approach? I think there are bigger institutions that have seen potential in bitcoin and thus demeaning it in order to stock up their own stashes of bitcoin, so that in future when price rises they make a profit.

Many banking institutions have also incorporated blockchain technology into their software and services. With this, I believe the future is bright for bitcoin. If things become better governments might also become lenient about crypto.

Title: Re: What is the biggest threat to Bitcoin?

I think institutions and whales are biggest threat to bitcoin as government or regulators will only make attempts to create panic among people by banning Bitcoin which is not possible at this moment but whales are already involved into Bitcoin share as they hold huge amount of Bitcoin using which they can steer the market price which will make it like a gambling so Bitcoin might somewhere lose it's decentralised nature when people or group can control it.

That's so obvious that whales are the only one who have the biggest impact in bitcoin's price.

Being selfish is really what can destroy bitcoin, they can have a full control about the fate of bitcoin so it is really hard to deal with those whales.

That's the disadvantage of having whales when we deal with the market peacefully, they are just making the market price of bitcoin very cruel for us and we are only relying on them. But still, good observation and decision making will make our bitcoin investment still profitable even if we are dealing with the biggest threat on bitcoin's price.

All I see is whales and the government.

With a lot of people using Bitcoin, I think if the government would limit their use of Bitcoin they would be having a hard time selling and buying them. Despite being decentralized, lesser users mean lower demand means lower price. In terms of price, I think hackers and scammers could also be a threat to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The biggest problem for bitcoin may be that the government will simply ban its use once and for all and all crypto exchanges will be outlawed. Of course, some advanced States that understand the value of bitcoin will leave it as a secondary tool, but in most cases, a complete ban will first lead to a decrease in the cost, and then to a complete zeroing of the price of bitcoin.

The biggest market for bitcoin probably in the US and EU, but the authorities have issued regulations regarding cryptocurrency and exchanges, so no need to worry about it.
The biggest threat that can affect the rally perhaps a hacked exchange that led to the loss of bitcoin worth billions of dollars.

As it is now I don't think any government ban or restrictions will have any impact  or threat to Bitcoin again, so many past threats, clampdowns and restrictions has no impact at all, in the past it usually from Asian countries despite that Bitcoin has continue to wax stronger and grows leap and bound, these two features decentralized r and anonymous transactions had even make Bitcoin unique and standalone among the digital currencies.

It would take time but if they hire somebody that is into Cryptocurrencies, they can easily restrict use within a country which can be scary for users within that country.

Well, in my opinion, the threats that face bitcoin right now are too small for bitcoin to even bother. After all, the coin now increased in price two times now that eventually, it only go up and not fall down. The financial sector are coming to a realization that maybe it is time to incorporate Bitcoin in their day to day dealings. Integrating Bitcoin to world markets, slowly but surely would also spell doom to fiat. Maybe, just maybe the fear of the financial elite that a digital coin will dominate the world economy might become reality.

I always held the same view - if global players decided to fight Bitcoin, it would be in a very bad spot. All exchanges would close, so the price would crash hard, and liquidity would be reduced to a fraction of pre-ban levels. Same with adoption - Bitcoin would be pushed exclusively to darknet markets. Very few people would want to deal with currency/asset that can land them in jail. So, the fact that Bitcoin's network can't be destroyed does not mean that governments can't harm Bitcoin.

this rule primarily threatens bitcoin. because it is clear that if the rules from the government are implemented it seems that it will be increasingly difficult to own or trade bitcoin because the access given by the government to people is very limited and even prohibited. I hope the government doesn't pass the law that could ban bitcoin

IMO, the biggest threat right now is not from the governments or from the competitors (altcoins). The biggest threat is still associated with the scalability. The volatile transaction fee and delay in getting the confirmations remains the biggest obstacle to global adoption of Bitcoin. Innovations such as Lightning were effective only to a certain extent and the core issues are still persisting.

More investors are even interested in bitcoin despite of the current pandemic.
No. This is a wrong concept being common in this forum because this is a bitcoin forum. People in the pandemic needed liquid money and thus liquidated a number of assets, Not venture into more sectors. Use your logic and think of the situation and you will also understand.

Now why this concept is common here, because people here are always going to bullish on bitcoin. Fact is being bullish is not wrong but being blind without logic is fatal - let that not happen to you too.

A lot of people lost their jobs in the crisis, you cant expect them to go around buying some shitcoins or even bitcoin with the last few reserves they have, at least in a country where bitcoin is not even recognized well. ::)

Now Bitcoin is starting to be in demand by many people, because finally Bitcoin can return to an all time high price. Although the increase
in the price of Bitcoin had a positive impact on the economy, it made hackers and scammers take advantage of this situation. Especially
newbies who lack knowledge of Bitcoin, are targeted by hackers and scammers. So in my opinion the biggest threat to Bitcoin is hackers
and scammers. They make Bitcoin look bad, even though if we study Bitcoin well, we can avoid becoming a victim of hackers and scammers.

The biggest threat to bitcoin is that governments don't like bitcoin.
Of course the government does not want bitcoin to dominate other currencies as a legal mean of payment because bitcoin is a decentralized currency. So far, however, bitcoin's legal status varies widely across most countries. As a currency, bitcoin has a different legal status and is subject to the jurisdiction of the region, but the majority of countries do not make its use of it an illegal asset. You can find out more information regarding the legality of bitcoin in various countries here (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country_or_territory).

I assume that the government will become an obstacle for bitcoin, especially regarding its adoption as a mean of payment. So far, the majority of countries do not prohibit the use of bitcoin as a tradable asset, they just try to be aware that bitcoin is not used in criminal cases. I just think that even though the government prohibit bitcoin as a legal payment asset, it is not a threat because bitcoin has a strong foundation that is supported by the user (community) and is still tradable. It's hard to say what the biggest threat to bitcoin is, but I think it should be something like a technical failure or the creation of a new digital asset.

There are some treats to BTC. Among them, one can be dangerous for BTC at any time. Permission of government of many countries can be count as a treat, hackers can damage the whole system that is a treat, being strong of others currency can be treated, this is some treats that are visible and there are some other issues to be a treat.
The authorities or the government are the only threats of bitcoin because they can simply say bitcoin is illegal and restrict the used of bitcoin, even it is decentralized. But I think it would be unlikely to happen because the government in other countries have started to recognize bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a beneficial and good investment. I also think it would take long for hackers to damage the whole system because they need to hack it's whole large network based on blockchain technology that a single hacker can't hack it alone.

Volatility which is considered one of the features of bitcoin can also be seen as a threat. I'm saying this in the sense that if bitcoin price dumps badly, most people will panic. And this panic can result to more dip. With this dip, people may be skeptic about using bitcoin (even as a currency) as they could be afraid that the dip could drop the monetary worth of their coin). All of this can be caused due to the volatile nature of bitcoin so I consider the volatility itself a threat.

Some think that the biggest threat to Bitcoin is governments because of their power to ban it in their nations. Another reason that I think is the ignorance that some have and the fear of investing in Bitcoin.
As we know, Bitcoin lacked development. I am concerned that every day solutions are created where Bitcoin is not looking for a solution to the problems of transaction time, fees and the few incentives for its holders.

What I would say is the biggest threat to bitcoin would be it's own price right now. As we reach far greater heights with bitcoin approaching a new All Time High, we will have more people coming in to join the party, and when the party is over, we know what comes next. The dump that would ensue after this might be bigger than the previous ATH we had reached, not to mention the whales that might also drop their coins out for the huge profit coming in.

Basically any threats that have occurred so far will eventually be overcome and the price will recover over time, so I don't think there's a threat that will make Bitcoin die. In fact, the threat of a crisis occurred which caused many asset values to fall but in the end it all recovered and was even accompanied by a strong increase at the end of this year for bitcoin itself and of course cryptocurrency. Indeed, Bitcoin will not be able to maintain its high value for long, but over time at least the bottom value of bitcoin continues to increase and thus, any threats that exist will not be able to make Bitcoin die for now.

Yeah, bitcoin always find the way to recover, even if a country ban cryptocurrency and exchanges, they simply move the headquarter to another bitcoin-friendly country.
Although there are hacked exchanges, it will recover eventually as we've seen it happen all the time after exchanges got hacked.
Furthermore, the biggest player and exchanges located in the US, yet the authorities have issued regulations regarding the crypto-world, nothing to worry about so far.

IMO, the biggest threat to bitcoin is the community itself, especially the one who are not well-educated about bitcoin. By mentioning community, I mean all the people who involved on this field, directly and indirectly.
When a missleading information about bitcoin shared by this kind of people, it could be repeated massively, and become a truth/fact. Just like how 2 bankers that I saw in separete times thinks bitcoin is a kind of MLM  ;D.
Imagine this “well-educated” people on financial sector can make their customers/clients believe in their words about bitcoin easily.

But that could be turned around immediately, right?

This community knows what is Bitcoin and what is not. There are a lot of threads they can read here in the forum and I think they trust the words of the people here rather than the words of other people talking about Bitcoin being a scam or a Ponzi scheme.

I was addressing people who are involved on Bitcoin in general, not specifically no this forum.
Almost all of the people on this forum is already bitcoin user. They surely know what is bitcoin. But for people outside, they dont have any reference rather than people who they trust the most. They can easily trust people who they believe has more education in financial sector. On the case above, bankers.

But they would be harmless if that is the case.

We've been here for a very long time and the fact that we're just making jokes about those people saying Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are scam. These people won't do anything to harm bitcoin, the fact that the price is still increasing while they continue their Ponzi ideas about Bitcoin. If it is a body of a government, that could affect but not a threat.

The government, in some countries where crypto is banned there are a lot of crypto enthusiasts who are finding ways to get involved in crypto even if it is illegal. If Bitcoin will not be accepted by the government world wide, Bitcoin circulation will stop and it will become worthless. Even though this is less likely to happen, it is still possible.

On the contrary, the fact that bitcoin continues to circulate despite bans and lack of acceptance among governments is exactly what makes it not worthless. If they really could "ban" bitcoin, it would have been banned already. Now they have no choice but to accept and adapt to it.

We can see that many countries do not recognize bitcoin :-\
and even buying and selling bitcoins in them is illegal.

Bitcoin is threat is the panic selling who are selling bitcoin when price dumps and that is the number 1 threat now that we need to avoid losing money too.

I hope people will remain calm and did not panic because we know that we will not see a good result to the bitcoin and of course to us who are affected by this so be careful of selling bitcoin don't sell it all.

For the whales I don't think they find this as a threat they find this as a clearance sale, panic selling have been happening since 2013 and bitcoin is still alive and kicking now pushing to write a new ATH. How many times have bitcoins price been dumped and come back even bigger when it goes onto the bullish trend? everytime so I think panic selling is a factor that we need to worry about bitcoin.

I would say Bitcoin has overcome most of it's largest threats, everyday it survives from here on in will only get stronger. Put it this way: betting against Bitcoin would not be wise.

Short-term:

-Governments trying to over regulate it in order to force maximum taxation such as - over bearing transaction surveillance (KYC, tell us all your addresses) & attempting to restrict custody on exchanges unless you provide them a signed transaction of your wallet. These regulations are dangerous & counter-intuitive to citizens, they don't prevent actual crimes. All these laws are merely hindering adoption in the short-term. The people and countries who embrace it & allow it to thrive first will be handsomely rewarded. The citizens in the countries with the overbearing laws will probably just rebel against their government when they see it's success elsewhere.

Long-term:

Unstoppable. Bitcoin will definitely shrink government revenue, many smaller jurisdictions will likely emerge. It's the nation states doing the most damage in the world. Bitcoin spells the end of central banking - basically the reason we have wealth inequality in the world, which leads to fixing most of the issues we have in the world.

How can you help:

Make your Bitcoin more private - never re-use address, use coin control - 1 UTXO at a time, coinjoin, Lightning, TOR. Use this guide bitcoinprivacy.guide (http://bitcoinprivacy.guide)

Iran has countless times said Bitcoin is illegal and so have other countries but did that stop their citizens from using BTC? I see that not a threat but a proof of use case for people who want to be free to use money as they wish. See it as negative but this is what makes BTC stronger!

Most of the major threats that have disrupted Bitcoin have been overcome, so whatever comes now is just mere challenge. Like when some governments banned it, their citizens were still using Bitcoin. Now it has gone mainstream the only challenge we can talk about is volatility and inability to get to everyone's hand due to one circumstances or the other.

What do you think can be the biggest threat for Bitcoin in current situation?

Governments and their banks.

If Bitcoin or crypto over all gets the expected popularity among people, the income that governments are earning from their banks are going to decrease significantly and the more crypto payment methods people use it's a money out of their(governments and banks) pocket.

You pay a lot of fees in the long run for services that you get from banks all the while they are lending your money to bigger corporations, while in the crypto what you spend is only in the form of transaction fees which will be paid to miners which using their hardware capacity and use their electricity to mine that coin.

If a day comes that most people around the word are using decentralized coin/s for any kind of payment then governments and their banks will be losing out on a good portion of their income which will eventually lead to removal of traditional banks and replacing them with crypto, but I'm guessing before that happens governments will be trying really hard to push their own created coin so they have some control over it.

Government is the only threat to stop or regulate Bitcoin.
For a long life government always trying to stop Bitcoin and yet they cannot.
Every year the community of Bitcoin is becoming bigger because the people are looking for alternative investment apart from real state and gold. In my opinion, government  cannot stop Bitcoin now and tomorrows.

One of my companions did profoundly contribute with bitcoin when he attempted to sell them he got scammed by an unknown person, which lift their heart from the bitcoin innovation and he never returned.

People who spread malware to other's computers to mine or steal their bitcoins are one of the greatest dangers to bitcoin as a whole. Mostly new comers don't know much about bitcoins and install some random software that contain virus and will blame bitcoin because they disappeared form the wallet.

It's true government regulations has its way of treating the bitcoin run harshly, but unfortunately for everyone hoping for new all-time high or at least a greater value, whales and top influencers also have a way of getting a grip of some gold and make off, dragging down the bitcoin price. We've have seen that happen in the past and it's very likely that it'll happen again soon once this whales have loaded up enough profits for themselves. So yes, bitcoin has other threats i would say are underrated

It's not really a problem, there's a hundred countries, as long as not everyone bans, bitcoin will live plus those bans will have to go on an extensive hearing knowing that it's going to cause public clamor and at the same time most lawmakers won't easily agree with each other.

This might be a controversial question, and yes it should be discussed to make everyone have a clear direction.
According to me the biggest threat to Bitcoins is their users only.
If they don’t become responsible while keeping their Bitcoins safe, then they gonna blame the Bitcoins ecosystem.
And moreover Bitcoin is decentralised in nature.
Therefore it’s safe from government and no governing bodies can ever be threat to BTC.

Government prohibitions, market shift, and new innovations in cryptocurrencies.

Those are some of the factors that may render BTC obsolete in the following years to come. But government prohibitions might be one of the biggest cause that may cause BTC to fall in its price. Imagine if countries were to prohibit the regulation and transaction of such coins. From that perspective alone, millions of people/users would face such inconvenience in which BTC is trying to provide.

Such a contract of the century may not appear because a contract between nations will include relations, hostilities, allies as well as the value this contract provides, although the territorial parties between the countries keep a neutral attitude and rarely attack each other but I believe they have mostly confirmed the enemies of each other and they will go against the rules the enemies make, no story of coincidence and unanimous decision. Threats can come from a control bloc assembled by many members of the nations, growing up also needs a foundation and framework, can't let bitcoin be stubborn

The participation of large corporate companies is kind of a threat, and it is also a good news for the progress of the cryptocurrency market. The government will always be the biggest threat to Bitcoin because they have the power to ban it. Look at China and how they banned any cryptocurrency from being traded if all governments decided to ban Bitcoin then it would be very difficult to trade Bitcoin to fiat I would say unless you are buying Bitcoin with cash it would be impossible since the government could track it. Even if cash to Bitcoin was possible most people would not want to do it because they would have to reveal their identity and there are other security risks when dealing in person. I think most people including me would stop using Bitcoin if it was made illegal.

The government may considered one of the big threats in bitcoin because if bitcoin will stay not legal in their eyes, then they will surely continue to ban bitcoin as much as they want. This will definitely create a hindrance to achieve bitcoin's goal price. But if they can gain taxes from every bitcoin's transactions, then it will be more favorable for them. The government will benefit from it and will use that taxes even into their own personal interests.

Another big threat to bitcoin i think are the big whales. They are the reasons why bitcoin prices tend to fall back despite of being very bullish. This happens most of the time because they are trying to manipulate the crypto market but always end up into committing failure.

This has been asked almost 1 year ago and I think this was the right moment to answer this question.

Well, it has to hear that some countries are keeping hated Bitcoin like China, some countries who ban crypto were also lifting it, and while had officially legalized this. Those countries who already adopt and legalize crypto will surely be imposing laws and strict regulations but I'd never find this as a threat for crypto but seeing this as additional protection to all crypto holders unless we are doing illegal activities.

The government will always be a threat to bitcoin just like bitcoin which is a big threat to fiat. As long as the government does not learn to accept bitcoin legally, then it will always be a big threat. And i think this will last for long since the government won't allow bitcoin to be a reserve currency simply because its decentralized. Big countries too like China and US continue to impose strict restrictions and even banning on bitcoin even if we know how these two countries were bag holders of bitcoin. In the end, its always clear that US is protecting its US dollar while China is protecting its yuan.

This seems uncertain, but in fact.. the uncertainty seems to be directed at good hopes for humans, it's just that the whole government has not really made it official for their country, and it looks like is not a big threat.
Well, I don't think at all that Bitcoin will lose its value until it weakens and disappears without any more enthusiasts due to some threats/issues, that seems unlikely.

This has to with government policy, all because the rate at which bitcoin has spread vastly and widely is so alarming...but most selfish interested government ain't getting what they want from this and not in full control of what there country does.

For now there is no serious threat that hit the crypto world, although there are some countries prohibiting crypto but the use continues as usual, the news spreading now the government began to ban cryoto users throughout the country but this has not been fully responded to by the wider community because they have also previously made statements about the use of crypto, If a country actually implements a crypto ban then this will be a serious threat to the population of that country because if we continue to force then we will definitely deal with the law, and the effect will also affect other countries and the value of crypto.

I think the biggest threat and most obvious issue or problem to bitcoin for now is getting banned by government. But not for long term banning because the government may ban it so that they can study or know the bitcoin more to prevent its citizen to launder money in the form of crypto assets or even commit fraud. But as long as the government sees no issue about the network and it's safe to use then I think it's not possible that they would ban crypto nowadays.

Hackers on the other hand doesn't impose much threats on bitcoin because it is a decentralized network and they would have a hard time just to crack it.

adn about government permitting bitcoin? this is soon to come as we can see there is already a country that finally adopt bitcoin and sooner there will others to follow.

the biggest thread to Bitcoin is "US" , we are the thread to bitcoin if how we will handle our use and investing in this currency , because the power of bitcoin lies to our hands .

One of the biggest risks for bitcoin right now is regulation. In recent weeks, China has clamped down on its cryptocurrency industry, shuttering energy-intensive crypto mining operations and ordering major banks and payment firms like Alipay not to do business with crypto companies.

There are several major threats to Bitcoin, including governments banning Bitcoin, scammers, hackers and Bitcoin abuse. All of these are indeed not
serious threats that can make Bitcoin die, because all these threats have solutions to overcome them. Of course all threats to Bitcoin will harm
Bitcoin users, because it can make the Bitcoin price fall. Fortunately the Bitcoin community is very strong, although many things threaten Bitcoin,
Bitcoin is still growing rapidly.

Not all regulation is bad.. However if any government properly thought about it, imposed reasonable and understandable regulations, more people would be entering the market and gonna make crypto more bigger in the future and I dont think they will pose a treat to eliminate Crypto, just adopt it in a way that serves them in benefit.

Its not a surprise that even though a lot of factors have threaten bitcoin, but all of them have never succeeded. Instead of pulling down bitcoin, bitcoin value is even gaining higher. For me, the biggest threat to bitcoin right now is that if all those countries who have adopted bitcoin will now turn their backs from bitcoin because they have been influenced by some developed countries, then maybe by that time we will see a huge decline in the price of bitcoin. But i know, things like those might temporarily ruin crypto, but i know it will always bound to recover again.

Given the general economic situation in the world, I think BTC is quite safe right now, as it is increasingly becoming an important prefix in the financial markets, and helping many people survive these difficult times. towel. because Bitcoin is too strong for the main man to ban it just, if not, why is the main mantle getting to know bitcoin but just want to know how to make sure people use it safely.Bitcoin is just one kind of thing. The decentralized currency that everyone knows about and is increasingly popular with, and even those who hate or ban it are starting to like it. This we see BTC increasingly asserting its position and its importance to everyone.

Biggest threat to crypto is the government taking control over it or putting some unwanted regulations. Majority of the people are here only because of no government intervention. If it happens, cryptocurrency will lose its unique elements.

First, you need to learn how to distinguish cryptocurrency and bitcoin, because, contrary to popular belief, these are two different concepts in terms of the degree of decentralization. If, for example, a cryptocurrency depends on the authority of a single man or team of developers, if all the decisions about the future of the protocol are made unilaterally by its creator, then you will know that this particular currency can be or will be shut down by people in power. Also, governments can continue to regulate such cryptocurrency until it is no longer exist. Say, there is some privacy coin that was created by John Smith. John is the only decision-maker, developer, and therefore a single point of failure. In spite of these obvious disadvantages, the coin does work perfectly, and more and more people start using it to transact privately. The more popular it gets, the more attention it attracts from the government. They may come to John Smith, knock on his door and ask him politely to make his coin less private and more compliant with current laws. Otherwise, he may found himself in jail. John Smith will have no other choice but comply with the law, implement government-approved protocol changes, and KYC/AML procedures. Most people won't see a point in using a private coin without privacy, which will likely lead to the coin's demise.

It should be clear, at this point, that no matter how unique the features of a coin are, they will make no sense unless a coin is decentralized.

So far what I know about KYC is the identification system of the exchanger for all its users, here it can be said to provide an opportunity for regulators to find out who the owner of the address is.  However, as far as I know.  Even if you know who the owner of the address is or in the sense of not being anonymous anymore, a system that has been designed to be decentralized cannot change.  The role of the regulator is limited to making regulations and policies for fiat and its financial system.  However Bitcoin and crypto have different systems and are not controlled by one party but all parties who are part of the market.  I feel that the regulator will not be a very fundamental threat but only a challenge to the viability of an innovation, especially in the financial sector.  So, no matter how the government behaves, if the majority of people believe that the innovation is good for them, the government can't do anything.

I think the biggest obstacle for bitcoin is that many countries have banned bitcoin, it seems at this time that many exchanges are implementing KYC so that the state wants to monitor all transactions that occur, if dangerous facts are found, of course the country will be totally banned and this is the beginning of all bitcoin problems.

I love your assertions but then again because the government doesn't have any principal to arrest for bitcoins sake, they are still creating FUD and putting in place stiff regulations that might crack BTC down which will obviously put fear in the mind of holders. But the good thing is that, no matter what, BTC will stand tall. So I still believe governments are the major threats.

That's why I'm so confident in the future of Bitcoin, because with so many threats to Bitcoin, but Bitcoin can still grow and the price of Bitcoin
continues to rise higher and higher. Usually everything that threatens Bitcoin will make the Bitcoin price go down first, but soon Bitcoin price will
recover. Likewise with the biggest threat you mentioned, it will only make Bitcoin go down temporarily. As long as we can be patient holding
the Bitcoin we have and not affected by all the things that threaten Bitcoin, we can make the profit we want.

Personally, I think regulation would be the biggest threat to bitcoin. If the government manages to regulate bitcoin, it can do more harm than good. Regulation means the death of the decentralization of bitcoin. If the government would do this, the nature of bitcoin would lose its essence. Bitcoin is decentralized and it was made to be like it so that we can be free to do anything without the need to ask for permission or consent from anything we do from the state. I think the regulation of bitcoin will defeat its purpose if done without a limit. Decentralization is what makes the security of bitcoin more reliable compared to that of centralized ones. In addition, it makes bitcoin more stable. Although regulation of bitcoin won't be easy work for them. I also don't think they can do it. It's very unlikely to happen, but the possibility is there. The chance of success is very little though.

I think the biggest threat to bitcoin is easily government "intervention".  Let's set if the United States Government wanted to "ban bitcoin".  Well no one can technically ban bitcoin but they can make it hard to buy/sell/trade bitcoin but disallowing exchanges to be able to transact in their borders. This would force the common investor out.

Probably the people, they're the one's that make the value of bitcoin and if they were to ever do something that will definitely make the market tremble, it will definitely be catastrophic, remember when 2017-2018 crash happened, a lot of crash happened because the people believed in what they're seeing and so they end up believing in it which resulted to the sell off at that time.

I think the biggest threat of bitcoin is the security system, because bitcoin is only available online so anyone has the opportunity to hack our wallet, right now it sounds impossible but we often get hacked cases, technology will continue to develop and I believe one day the bitcoin algorithm can be guessed so bitcoin is worthless again.

Government is the biggest threat to bitcoin, if all countries unite to get rid of bitcoin this will be the end of bitcoin. But I think that can't happen anymore, bitcoin is gradually being accepted in many places and legal tender in some countries. One China can't stand in the way of bitcoin, no matter how many threats but bitcoin is still growing and increasing day by day, let's firmly believe in bitcoin.

I don't think that the biggest threat to Bitcoin is countries' banning Bitcoin. China's imposing a ban on cryptocurrencies has already proven this. Bitcoin was affected a little first but this affect was gone after a short period of time. Bitcoin price is even on a very big rise now. So I think that the biggest threat is the rate of demand for Bitcoin. If nearly all people stop using Bitcoin someday, then there will be really hard days waiting for Bitcoin.

World's most populous country has banned "all crypto transactions" and that barely reflected on Bitcoin's price. I think that proves a decent level of regulation-resistance.
Major Western institutions and investors recognise it as a valuable asset and as holders automatically become proponents.
There will no doubt be more regulation, more turmoil and price fluctuation but at this point government interference is not a major threat.
That's globally, of course. Locally governments may very well threaten your personal wallet but that's another matter.

In terms of any altcoin superseding Bitcoin, well there are already coins that technically have a high price but limited sue like YFI and GUH (which was much higher than bitcoin for a brief moment this year).
And they don't seem to threaten Bitcoins dominance any -- they're purely financial instruments.

The biggest threat to Bitcoin... Perhaps that would Bitcoin becoming ubiquitous, boring and unremarkable?

That's right .. I agree with you .. the biggest threat when bitcoin is regulated by government regulations that harm us as bitcoin holders. This is what is worried if bitcoin is held by the government. Eliminate the centralized nature of bitcoin. Where we will no longer be free to seek profit from bitcoin.

Despite fairly steady growth over the past decade, Bitcoin is still a market facing a risky future. Bitcoin will have to continue to struggle to develop step by step and claim a more promising position in the future. The biggest threat to Bitcoin's future:
 - Miners lost confidence: after the price of Bitcoin went down, thousands of Miners fell into trouble with consecutive losses, even many factories selling mining machines went bankrupt.
 - As users become more conscious, Bitcoin may be shunned in favor of anonymous coins and altcoin may even become insecure.
 - Attacks of hackers listening to this very fertile cryptocurrency market. this even had a negative impact on the BTC price, causing many investors to give up.
 - Many factors outside the crypto community still have a great influence on Bitcoin or BTC investment.

There are things that makes an impact in bitcoin but some are not should be considered as threat. Here are the examples that I could think of: FUD, Price manipulation, Pump and Dump and banning of it in some countries. If a news suddenly spread with among these examples, the price of btc will suddenly be affected most of the time is to decrease. Feel free to add additional information regarding to this.

The only thing that can be a threat to bitcoin here is banning from different countries. Maybe we had overcome bannings from China but i think if another countries will do such thing like that, then maybe bitcoin will experience another crash again. But for now, i can see that the biggest threat for bitcoin is the government alone. As long as the government still oppposed to bitcoin's legalization, then it will always be a big threat. No matter how strong bitcoin as an investment, if its not going to be legalized and creates massive adoption, then its definite goal will never be achieved.

The biggest threat to Bitcoin is not most countries' banning it actually. We saw that when China banned cryptocurrencies not a long time ago. The market has lost so many investors but still there is no problem at all. The FUD didn't work this time and the market is even on a very positive run now. The biggest threat would be a big decrease in the rate of demand for Bitcoin. The less the demand, the weaker the coin is.

Well in short, --loss of mass adoption will be the biggest threat to bitcoin becomes shutting down. But I think that will never happen and also it will never happen that it will turn to zero value. The biggest threat to bitcoin is that when the country did not understand how bitcoin will work and instead of legalizing it they will ban just because they can put tax and regulate bitcoin. In short, governments are the biggest threat to bitcoin becomes weaker, but no matter what it will never depend on that situation. The adoption will grow and grow since they know that it has value in the future.

This is somewhat discouraging for the people who are not techy enough in terms of how to secure their wallets online. We're prone to this thing and so many people had claimed that they were hacked and that is probably because they are also careless leading with their keys and gadget.
And aside from getting prone to hacking, one thing we are also worried about is the price. Any time it can be in the dump, people might lose their minds and sell them. And this could affect the trust of people especially for the newcomers and those who have a plan to invest, they become doubtful.

IMO, the biggest I think are the influencers! Sounds weird but think of the effect of tweets made by Elon Musk. He makes a tweet and plays with the fragile (volatility) part of Bitcoin, which I consider to not be good for Bitcoin even though he doesn't mean bad. But! have you ever wondered what will happen if an influencer just like him uses their platform to dissuade people to not use Bitcoin. In such a case, we'll face a huge market crash depending on how big the person is. Thinking of this makes me skeptic most times because you don't know the evil that the government are paying people to carry out.

As for now, the bitcoin is currently in a good move of course the only threat is the government some of them are now already terminated most of the transactions with the use of the bitcoin or the bitcoin itself. Well its not too much threat but to those only have countries with restrictions and also the market volatility to the bitcoin holders. But the main threat to the bitcoin i guess so far does not have because even the altcoins cannot surpass the market price of the bitcoin.  Bitcoin already prove a good market movement since 2017 it build so much strength.
