Title: Another fake atomic app on google play store
Post by: Oshosondy on November 24, 2020, 07:21:52 PM
Just saw this fake app on playstore, claiming to be existing since 2013. This wallet will have nothing to do than to steal peoples private key.

I am very tired of google, nothing yet done in a way they will not list fake apps again. We should be very careful of downloading directly from play store, downloading from the official sites is better.

The problem is that these programs are open source and it is easy to claim to have a hard fork for the code, but the investigation that part of the code contains information that could lead to the loss of money needs to be carefully followed by Google Play administration.

It is also difficult to file lawsuits against crypto scam, which makes Google Accountability, the judiciary, a very complicated process.

All Google services are lazy about taking serious steps against crypto scammers, which makes Google accountability a complex process.

It's been known for a while now how notoriously careless Google is with listing apps on their Google Play platform with how much fake and scammy apps there is on their platform.

Unfortunately, there's nothing really we can do but to report it.

Link for those who want to help report it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vadvers.aamplek&hl=en_GB&gl=US

Google can be so insensitive even to the very least, google should be giving name preference to apps, -original Apps- and not imitations can use it. When I started getting electrum app got my eyes rolling in with confusion to how many Apps suggestions some having the same name but different Logo, I think Google is bigger than this nonchalant hands, they are empowering the fakes if they don't make it difficult for them.

And Google team claimed that Google store is scam free? God have mercy on newbies that don't know the difference, this is why its always smart to download any money and crypto app from the right source, no app store is safe again it's better to find the app official website through Google search and download instead, it's a bull season and scammers are on alert

There is now so many of this fake apps on Google play store, and so many threads repeating the same warning to users not to download crypto apps or wallets from playstore, but from official sources/sites. I think by now any responsible user will protect their funds and stop using Google playstore, but the heads up is good btw, for new users and those who don't know they can download fake sites and malwares from some apps on playstore.

I'll report this app, and hope they take it down asap (though I know it'll take them some time, which is another flaw in their system).

And Google team claimed that Google store is scam free?

Can you point us to your source that says Google made this claim? Not sure if they'd make such a bold claim knowing how exceptionally false it is even at whatever angle you look at it.

I think it's true, there was a time when too many fake apps are available on playstore and they are been flushed out one by one, there was a statement made at the time that google play store is now safe 🤔, that's a very long time ago, not sure I can dig anything up about this again, anyways its getting more risky to install apps through stores now, better start downloading from official websites

I really doubt that Google would claim something like that. They would open themselves for bunch of lawsuits if someone lost money due fake app, and people are loosing money due that on the daily basis. They might have claimed that PlayStore is safer now than it was before, which is probably true because they introduced human component when checking malicious software, but they are still not doing enough in that regard. Not even close.

In the end, they covered themselves nicely from any lawsuits. You can see this quote from their TOS, so alleged claim to be 100% scam free would go against this.
Google is not responsible for and does not endorse any Content made available through Google Play that originates from a source other than Google.

Regarding fake Atomic wallet, this is the 2nd case in last few months, that I know of. In the previous case it took Google more than a month to remove it, I hope that they will be much faster this time as some will fall for this, so least they could do is to minimize the damage and remove it ASAP. It would probably help if Atomic reports it too, or at least warns their users, but based on previous case it seems like they don't really care much about that.  Last time i warned them about fake wallet, they didn't do absolutely anything to warn their users. Maybe that's the reason why scammers are using their name again.

The two of you are affirming something that never happened. Google is gaining negative "popularity" every day. All we can do to keep ourselves safe is to stop using Google Play entirely.
It is another matter when, on the contrary, many experts warn that Google Play is becoming a dangerous source of viruses.

Quote
Earlier in November, Spanish cybersecurity researchers from NortonLifeLock and the IMDEA Software Institute named the most dangerous source of mobile viruses. According to experts, most often malicious files get to Android smartphones through the Google Play app store. In total, experts studied 34 million mobile programs, from 10 to 24 percent of the applications were found to be malicious or unwanted.

That is just the the case, playstore as only been the scam habitat, as centralized as they are, they should be able to protect people that visit the app store. Apps like cloned/fake electrum or other fake wallets similar to original should not have ways into the app store. Lately also uniswap app was also found on the store. There should be ways all these fake/phishing/scam apps can be avoided and find no way into app store, that is why experts do not recommend people to use app stores.

Nice catch for some user they are familiar with the Atomic wallet and it is listed as one of the good wallets to store cryptocurrency and newbies would easily fall for this application since it has the same name and even logo if it was reported to google would they be able to take action to this one?
What could be the things we could do to google delete this app? Sorry not familiar with Playstore.

The tendency to scam by creating fake wallets has now increased a lot. Now the name of atomic wallet is being used more for scams. Those who blindly believe in Google should be aware now because lots of fake apps and ads are being found on Google everyday. Those who know about such scams do not fall into this trap. So now it's time for everyone to be extra careful before using Google service. This will greatly increase the security of crypto users wallets.

Bare minimum Google could do is to manually verify every app that has been submitted by the developer who is doing that for the first time. Sure, some scammers might try to circumvent that by creating legit app first and then submitting fake one, but that kind of "long game" would be too much effort needed for 99% of scammers that are trying to pull off something like that. If they lack the manpower to do that, surely they can afford to hire more people.

I reported the fake app to Atomic support via Telegram and  apparently they were unaware of this case. At least they said that they will report it to Google. I also asked them to share warning on their social media channels. I hope that I'm wrong but I think that they will ignore that request, like they did last time.

You can report it to the Google. Here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vadvers.aamplek&hl=en_GB&gl=US

Never use the Playstore search widget/bar to search any kind of Cryptocurrency wallets, the scammers are manipulating this with their paid fake reviews, instead go to the official website of the wallet, be sure that you are on the right official website that you want to download, it's always that they have the link of their official PlayStore widget.

It's showing already 1000+ downloaded. God knows how many people have lost their funds by inputting their private keys there. Youtube, google, play store are acting as same recently. they easily approve a 100% scam to promote in their platform. It's not expected and I don't like it.

For this, we always should try the official source to download any application. Basically, we don't mistake when we have much time and we are in good mind, but when we feel busy and want to get the application soon we may fall into these scams that time. so be aware always in free time or in busy.

Can't believe this is still happening on google playstore in 2020, there should have be a report button on playstore by now if team can't manually check listed apps themselves, google playstore isn't safe for new people as they will surely fall victim to apps like this. Over 1000 people have download this fake app already, what a shame, stop downloading apps through playstore most especially if they are money and fund apps

There are many fake crypto wallets on google playstore presently, the reason why I called them fake is because no one recognized such crypto wallet, there is no website or a crypto project backing the wallet up, they just came out of nowhere, my advice for newbies is never use any unknown crypto wallet to store coins and also download crypto wallets from official sources instead
