Title: Please help - Ledger deducted btc and sent to 2nd unknown address??
Post by: BaygonIt on November 28, 2020, 08:46:26 PM
Sorry...

Hadnt moved btc in a sometime.  I sent .1 btc to my Binance Address (received successfully on Binance about 5 mins after sent) from Ledger Hardware Wallet, however,  it also sent .9 BTC to another btc address which is unknown to me.  I was sure to only send the .1 ( double checked address, etc on ledger) so I have no idea how an additional .9 was sent and to where?   Ive read about a the difference when not being a whole btc being sent back to a change address but my Ledger doesnt show receiving anything back.  So Ive been deducted a full 1 BTC on balance.   On BTC explorer it looks like it was confirmed over 350 times and is in some unspent unknown address.  So....is my ledger compromised?  have I lost .9 BTC ?  or what am I missing here?  I have no idea how to begin to understand what is happening...

Any individual who can help it so my mind doesnt think it lost $16,000 today will be appreciated more than you may know...

THANK YOU

Ive read about a the difference when not being a whole btc being sent back to a change address but my Ledger doesnt show receiving anything back.

It seems to be a synchronization related problem. Open settings in the top-right corner, select the "Help" tab and click on "Clear Cache". If it's not going to help then try downloading Electrum (https://electrum.org/#download) and restoring your wallet there using your Ledger (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161925-Set-up-and-use-Electrum); not the recovery seed. You should eventually see your coins in the Ledger Live. Their servers might be a bit overloaded right now.

Your .9 btc must be in a change address.
Have you checked your wallet balance in ledger live app?

Dont worry, your funds are probably safe, as ledger is a very secure hardware wallet.

I believe 3PFs6vecVw2gWRK4b7Ah6XborpCnuTeL1i is your change address and your fund are ok

This is your change address. Ledger automatically creates a change address when the transaction does not consume all the coins from the input.
Check your wallet balance in ledger live app again (or any other wallet software you use with you Ledger).

I hope the issue already has been resolved and you have seen the remaining balance in your wallet. 3PFs6vecVw2gWRK4b7Ah6XborpCnuTeL1i is your change address and a part of the same wallet.  You can easily get the visual if you connect it with Electrum and active the address tab. In the address list section you will see that 3PFs6vecVw2gWRK4b7Ah6XborpCnuTeL1i address has the changed coins.

Get rid of worries if Ledger Live is causing you problems with accurate balance display (which is not uncommon), by downloading the Electrum desktop wallet and connecting your Ledger to it. Here I emphasize that you connect it and use it as a user interface (do not enter your seed anywhere except in the hardware wallet itself).

Detailed instructions on the following link : Set up and use Electrum (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161925-Set-up-and-use-Electrum)

As others said, you shouldn't worry. BTC should exist on change address. If you are unaware of the change address then you may read this thread, What is "Change" address on bitcoin wallet? read to know (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5190841.0). As I had encountered, Ledger Live sometimes can't be synchronized due to weak connectivity. Make sure your Ledger Live is up to date.

In addition, be careful from scammers if incase someone PM you to recover your BTC. If so, then just report to admin for unsolicited PM's.

OP reached out to me in PM, and then we had a long conversation on Telegram. The issue has been resolved. I had to assist him every steps on opening his ledger using Electrum.

I felt his excitement when he saw his balance are there. An amazing feeling to help. @BaygonIt as I said, Ledger Live sucks, to access your bitcoin and performing any task, use this Electrum file with your Ledger nano S. It's safe since without having the access of the hardware wallet no one can broadcast your coins. At the final stage of a transaction it will always ask your hardware wallet to sign the transaction.

Man... I have to agree with you... the Ledger Live sux!

I had no issues with the Browser App (Google Chrome) and then Google and Ledger had some issues (not supporting it anymore) and since I started using Ledger Live... it just gave me endless problems.  >:( >:( >:(

Why do we have to use external wallets (Electrum) ... to successfully use our Ledger hardware wallet? ..Major fail in my books!!!

I suggest you creating some kind of tutorial for this procedure and putting it under the hardware wallet section here : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=261.0  (Will give some more merit for that)  ;)

You don't have to, but there is no denying that Electrum provides better features and better usability than Ledger Live. The problem is that while Electrum is developed based on community input and feedback, Ledger Live is developed based on Ledger's business interests, which is why they spend time implementing things like useless altcoin exchanging and lending platforms with high fees instead of proper bitcoin coin control or address management.

Ledger have already published a guide on how to use their devices with Electrum here: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161925-Set-up-and-use-Electrum
