Title: Web wallet better than mobile wallet
Post by: mrasel5t5 on December 03, 2020, 01:07:51 PM
A web wallet is one such wallet. You do not need to use any additional applications to save it. It is much safer. In my opinion, web wallet is much better than mobile wallet. Using it does not require a separate space. Hopefully the wallet will expand further in the future.

Well, neither of those options is ideal... A web wallet can be pulling an exit scam, it has many attack vectors, it might go bancrupt...
A mobile wallet is a little bit safer, but it's still not ideal.

Not your keys, not your coins... By using a web wallet you're giving up controll of your funds for some extra convenience.

You're free to do so, just don't come crying if you get robbed.

How about waking up from your bed one morning and you decide to check your web wallet out and it shows you nothing? You try going back to reload the web page and you find out that it's no more working? That haven't happened to you yet right? I guess that's why you are making this post, you'd better reconsider before it's too late

Every wallet type has its own set of advantages and disadvantages too. Personally, I prefer mobile wallet to web-based wallet because of the ease of access. I don't have to be keying in my mnemonics or pk everytime I want to use it. I juts have to launch the app to see my token balance. I believe this has security advantages over web wallet, and explains why we have so many mobile wallets today. It's by popular demand.

watch out for scam web wallets, don't fall for it or you lose your coins. several instances where users just come to bitcointalk to complain about the tokens lose or lose access to their coins they have deposited. freewallet is just an example of the scam that still continue to freeze accounts, you'd be forever regretting why you deposited to a webwallet where you don't even have the private key.

Both has pros and cons. None of them are good in my opinion because web wallet are risky because of getting hacked and mobile wallet is also the same. But if you consider the features may have, I would go with mobile wallet.

Web wallets are even more dangerous because they can get compromised at any time, mobile wallet is safer than web wallet unless you fall for any kind of phishing scheme or you reveal your private key somehow, web wallet don't have private keys or recovery seed

I hope you are kidding here.
I can only advise against using a web wallet. There are countless threats and attack vectors when using web wallets.

I suggest a web wallet because it is easy to use than a mobile wallet, and your mobile can be hacked, and sometimes you lose your data. Hence, a web wallet is also convenient for use; most of the projects coming on Uniswap. These are easy to connect with Metamask through a web wallet, but a little difficult to connect Metamask in the mobile wallet, so a web wallet is best.

Web wallets aren't safer than mobile wallet because web wallet works like a Centralized platforms where you have no control over your funds, if anything happens to the web wallet you will lose access to your fund, to log into a web wallet you need email and password, to log into mobile wallet you need to import your recovery seeds or private keys

I've used few web wallets in the past and today they aren't working anymore, not even a single one put of four, the projects have exit scam while I was trying to hold the coins on web wallet, do not trust any project that ask people to use their web wallet, if the project don't have standalone wallet it's probably a scam project

But to make the purpose of cryptocurrency as payment system, we need to use mobile wallet to do that. Since many transactions now do by mobile. Only a few that still use desktop to do transactions.

Most crypto users who understand the risks of using web wallets will stay away from it and never used to hold huge amount of crypto assets but unfortunately there are still users who fall on some phishing links and loss huge amount of money I will prefer mobile instead of using web because mobile os are far more secure than desktop browsers using windows incase of malicious softwares.

I don't expect you to have a sound sleep at night because web wallet will only give you heart aches, they are a big NO to those who are smart enough

1. Web wallets don't give users private keys access
2. Web wallets are fully under the team control
3. Hackers can easily jailbreak web wallets
4. Web wallet can stop working at anytime

Although mobile wallets are indeed suboptimal as security, if you don't download many strange apps and you are also careful which mobile wallet you download, you should be OK-ish (for daily use amounts), meaning that you will not be specifically targeted.
On the other hand web wallets are continuously targeted by phishing and the hackers do try to hack them since they're the perfect "honeypot". Also quite some web wallets may still not allow you set tx fee or may not send out a tx exactly when you send it (which matters if you buy things directly for Bitcoin).

So web wallets are well under mobile wallets. (Of course, I would not use mobile wallet in the year 2020+ without a hardware wallet attached).

When it comes to wallet, security is of higher importance than space, you have the wrong notion that it's safe we have seen so many hacking on web wallet, especially the domain redirection, mobile wallet is more safer as long as the owner how to secure his phone and put verification and password protected, but on top of this education is still the key in managing the wallet well.

You think web wallet is safe? You do know that most of the web wallets don't give you access to your own private keys. This means that once you send your coins to that wallet, no longer are the owner of the coins! Even if they do allow you to access your private keys, they might also have access to it which still bring in the doubt of security. Don't forget, web wallets can be hacked easily if they get access to your username and password. Also I doubt you would store your keys anywhere since you think you don't need to do anything "additional".
You better start learning how to keep your wallets safe.

I agree, most of the exchange and wallets are made as a website and the applications are more like an extension of the wallets, so it's definitely safe and better to use a web wallet on your computer.

There are also some that offer android applications that you could also use, not all wallets have a mobile application so it might not be optimized when opening on the mobile devices. Also you just need to be aware of so many phishing and scam applications that trying to copy legitimate wallets. You could just check the web wallet website if it has a mobile application.

But both platforms have their advantages and disadvantages because mobile devices are portable.

I think both web wallet and mobile wallets can be hacked and not safe for any unathorized access because there are no such perfect technology when it comes to security, that is why no system is safe for great hackers who can easily steal your information and funds. But I suggest mobile wallet is more accessible than web wallet because using applications is much convenient than opening your browsers to access your wallet.

Not much difference from web and mobile wallet, most of the web wallet comes with their application for respective platform. And both these wallets are nit really safe unless they are giving you the private key. Mobile wallet has different kind of choices so choose one depends on you needs for free.

My smartphone memory capacity is very wide to accommodate the mobile wallet application...
I really like the Atomic wallet concept because you can have a 'private key' for each coin listed there. mobile wallets and web wallets have different levels of effectiveness, you can transfer your coins from anywhere while web wallets are not, so I prefer mobile wallets like Atomic.

yes, i agree with you
its easy to use and easy to understand rather than mobile wallet
but i only use web wallet to store any coins for a while, because for long term holder i use my ledger nano s

Though both wallet have unique advantages and disadvantages but i prefer mobile wallet. I feel more secured and convenient using mobile wallet. But If you intend to store large amounts of crypto for long periods of time, then i would suggest cold storage methods like Ledger Nano X which is probably the best choice.

Most web wallets don't allow you to hold private keys and that's why it's not a good basis and say that it's better than mobile wallet. As long as your wallet doesn't provide you private keys, that's not a good wallet.

Even the old Nano S is still fine though.

I don't know how you feel using a web wallet, but to me it's totally unsafe cause there are alot of loopholes on the web, it's just like saving your crypto on exchanges and saying it's better for them to be there on the exchange than being in your personal mobile wallet, if the exchange gets hacked, there's a chance you might not get your money back cause it's like keeping your money with someone, when the person gets robbed off that money, how can they repay you ? So storing your crypto on web wallets its a kind of "our hand in your pocket" kind of scenario, try and avoid dramas, it's best you download and make use of a mobile wallet, it's alot more safer than a web wallet.

Actually, we couldn't get all the features in one place. A mobile wallet is very easy to use when websites have some limitations. Now so many single mobile wallets do support multiple coins. The main problem of website wallet is phishing sites, either you have to bookmark or save pages properly. Websites couldn't prefer QR code scanning features.

I personally can never rate a web wallet higher than a mobile wallet cus in terms of security, they are almost the same thing, infact , i believe that mobile wallet is far safer than web wallet when security is of concern, No matter how you look at it, web wallet stand a higher risk of hack than mobile wallet.

i stand to be corrected incase there are thing i dont seem to understand.

It depends on which use and I believe that we must have all varieties to buy time at a certain moment of high. However for financial security Web wallet is not the most suitable. Thus, for greater security, the hardware wallet is the most suitable because there is a great difficulty of invasion by third parties. To finish, we are not completely safe on the internet and seeking greater security should be a priority for investors.

Most web wallet are centralized in nature so it'll just be wrong chosing them general over mobile wallets. With mobile wallets you are in charge of the welfare of coins to some extent as even with the centralized wallets, you'll still need to be very cautious to avoid corrupting your device and give access to viruses to steal your coins. Web wallet are the closest to hardware wallets which are the most recommended form of storing your coins. They're very affordable that you got no excuse to choose web or mobile wallet over them.

But since the discussion here is focused on just this two types of wallet then my vote has to go to web wallet and the recommended one to patronize should be electrum. It has all the advantage a proper wallet should have excluding the extra security a hardware wallet has.

This view is not wrong at all because there are currently few crypto-related mobile applications, the projects will be built on the web first and then started in the example application. Using mobile wallets here is what the projects do, it only offers convenience when you can use it anytime, anywhere.

Web wallets requires login, that's says it all, secured wallets should ask users for recovery seed or private keys, entrusting funds with web wallet is like intentionally giving them out, web based wallet don't require for keys but logins meaning they are complete online web pages, how could you even think of storing valuable assets on such wallets?

As I play Axie, I can use Uniswap and then Metamask to withdraw my profits and I don't find any hassle doing it as it has a fast transaction process.

Maybe, other user should also try using in Metamask so that they will not feel any worries in finding a web wallet that will help them store their assets or money properly.

Every one of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. For a mobile wallet, it is highly recommended if you are the kind of person who likes convenience because with a mobile wallet you can access your funds whenever and wherever you are. On the other hand, we wallets provide are better if you because it has complete features compared to a mobile wallet which is only limited(in some cases). Personally, I'd like to use a mobile wallet over a web wallet.

Using it does not require a separate space.

Leaving aside everything about centralized stuff, not your keys not your coins that everyone else ha touched.

The space argument is probably one of the worst that is, I can bet that you have on your phone more useless apps or games than all the wallets on google play would occupy, actually let me check since I have electrum on my phone with 4 wallets, good for keeping some dust.
80M! a huge 80 Megabytes of space, 80M of space in the age when you can buy a 128GB phone for 150 euros! Not even talking about expanding your memory with an sd card!
One of the worst arguments I've read so far to promote web wallets.

It doesn't make sense to call metamask a web wallet because metamask works like a plug-in, probably a add-on and still it gives users private keys and recovery seed, to log into metamask you need to import your recovery seeds or private key, that's a big difference from web wallet

For ease of use I think webwallet is easier to use than a mobile wallet.
But for security I think mobile wallets are safer from hacker attacks than webwallets. because a hacker is more difficult to hack programs that are on mobile than only in the browser. and if on the web we might get caught in web phishing, and other viruses.

"using it does not require any extra space" — this in no way justifies their security.

Mobile phones these days come with plenty of space so I don't think some MB's of space should be any problem either.
