Your account is newbie. I advise that instead of doing bounty learn some useful stuff here. Kindly refer to the attached links that will help newbie avoid being banned.

I don't think joining bounty can make you banned its not prohibit to join it. However spamming in forum by joining campaign such as signature could literally make your account banned.

If you join bounties, you will not be banned. Most bounty hunters are useless posters and in one way or the other go against one or more rules of this forum which can get their accounts banned. Many of them are spammers and also like to plagiarise, but the ones that fully obey the rules of this forum are not banned.

Be rest assured that you won't get ban joining bounty until you become probably a Jr member and you start spamming various topics just to meet up the terms of your signature campaign. The real advise is you shouldn't concentrate on bounty you won't gain much. Concentrate on the forum topic and learn from the higher members. This is where real gain is.

First of all, I want to give you a warm welcome to this forum.
In regards to participating in some bounty campaign, you will not get banned by just participating in it, your account will only penalize if you broke some rules like plagiarism, spam posting, and more.
You could check out this link so you can familiarize yourself with the rules.
Code:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0#post_rules
Now getting back to the topic, personally, I've used to participate in several bounty campaigns and as you can tell I am not banned, reg tagged, or anything because as much as possible I obey the rules they provided. It wasn't that hard, isn't it? There's no secret and such the only thing you need to remember to avoid getting banned just follow the rules and you'll be fine.

I am new but I know all the rules of btt.
I believe you know all the rules and regulations of BitcoinTalk Forum. I also believe that you will abide by all the rules and regulations of the Bitcoin Forum.  Your account will never be banned just for participating in the bounty.  Your account will be safe if you follow all the rules of the Bitcoin Forum and the participating bounty campaigns.

@OP, you could get a ban if you keep make spam post on this forum (especially when you are wearing paid signature to fill your weekly qouta), as @hilariousandco said on this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1684035.0

Quote
First offence: 7 days
Second offence: 14 days
Third offence: 30 days
Fourth: Permanent ban

If you have received the fourth ban, it's mean you must leave this forum forever since you have got a permanent ban.

that's mean I need to avoid signature campaign right?
You have got it wrong. Just read & follow the rules on this forum and you will be fine. You must understand how the signature campaign works first before decided to apply (when you rank up, not now)

avoid spamming, this is one will make sure will ban you, avoid replies that are off-topic or not related, make sure you read what is the topic is so that your answers are on the same page, because if these continue it will be deleted and you and the more deleted post or comment you will be ban, worse is permanent like what others have mentioned.

I don't know where you got the figure but it is true somewhat. The real percentage can be a little higher or a little lower than 70%. Anyway, it is a big odds.

Bounties and campaigns are not moderated and the forum does not run it. You should know the fact that bitcointalk.org forum is one of the free-speech forum but about rules it is most strictest forum. If you break rules, you will be punished. For some rules, you will have a few temporary ban (up to 3) before a permanent ban will be applied. For some rules (as plagiarism or ban evasion), when you break it and is found, you will get a permanent ban immediately.

Joining bounties or campaigns are not bad, and the forum allows you to join them. Spend your time to read the Welcome message (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5036308.0). If you won't spend time to read it, the forum is not for you.

Read rules (others gave you above) and the welcome message, then do right things here.

Welcome to the forum! Apparently, your friends have missed some valuable information in explaining the forum system. It is a common misconception of newbies, as some accounts get banned due to spamming different threads. Usually, to fulfill and achieve the specific number of posts for the bounty campaign.

Bear in mind that there could be further reasons for a moderator to ban an account, visit this thread to understand those.
[1] Forum / Campaign Why have I been banned? Posting guidelines. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1741988.0)

Anyone has the freedom to explore the forum and participate in any bounty campaigns but avoid violating any rules. To avoid such circumstances, read the rules and follow them.

No, actually you neer to avoid thinking about doing bounties just concentrate on gaining knowledge about cryptos which will eventually help you to earn merits which is required to get rank up along with activity. Once you ranked up you can enjoy incentives for your posts while still earning something from this forum.

You won’t get banned for joining bounties (no idea what you mean by "task"), but rather by what you do with your posts. The rules have been pointed out above, but just to emphasize on the main reasons get banned, I should point out:

-   Plagiarism: copy/[spin]/paste text from elsewhere, without referencing the source.
-   Spamming: posting constant low value content posts.
-   Ban evasion: persisting on posting from an account, when another account of yours (if you have one) has been previously  banned.

Besides the possibility of getting banned, there’s the possibility of receiving negative trust. This can lead your account to not being accepted in campaigns. The negative trust can happen for a wide range of reasons, many of which I personally do not agree with, but it’s not infrequent to see accounts tagged for being unethical (i.e. cheating in campaigns, using multiple accounts in the same campaign, meriting his own alt accounts, and so forth). The core reasons though should be commerce related.

Your friends gave you half assed answer, they probably got banned cause they spammed for the sake of bounties.

Not really. Participating on Signature cmapaign isn't bad or can caused banned accounts. But doing spamming within signature campaign can make your account ban.

Spam is a number one strict rules for users. Writing nonsense or off topic reply can't bring you anywhere but only damage your status. Might as well start by reading and contributing on good topics first. As a newbie you should not think or being afraid of ban. Your deeds can change the trajectory of chance to get ban. Just do a normal stuff or activity here and no mods will ban you.

OP, based on what I've seen, as long as you create good content, respond with legitimate questions, or join the conversation constructively - you will not start getting suspended (check the newbie tagged link for specific suspendible/banned list).  You just have to think and not spam the board.  Now, to earn you must learn.  Whether it be merits, signature campaigns, or whatever you are looking at doing.  Newbies just think that they can come in and earn a bunch, sorry it doesn't work that way.  Just my .02.
