Title: How to hide boring topics?
Post by: dkbit98 on December 11, 2020, 09:55:44 AM
Oh boy I noticed so many boring topics recently and I can't avoid or hide them properly without using some script or ignoring many members.

Can someone propose any other way to hide this topics in same way like we can hide boards, or maybe some better solution.

Maybe I am asking to much but first thing on my mind was to use BPIP extension, suchmoon and Tryninja for this :)

How would the script or algorithm know what you find boring? ;D
I guess suchmoon or Tryninja could program something that highlights certain threads based on keywords you input into it. Maybe putting a threshold for misspelled words could be a thing. Most of the crappy topics are created by members who can't spell anything.

Individually, but there is so much junk that even AI would not be wrong in picking boring stuff :)
Seriously I don't suggest using any AI crap, just regular human beings and manual +/- , that would work just fine to make our own list of hidden posts.

This has been mentioned a lot of times, but unfortunately, such a feature does not exist (yet).

It has however been proposed on Epochtalk multiple times too, and I hope it's something we see implemented. There's another question there though, will we ever see epochtalk live? But this is no topic for such discussion.

Nope! There is no way a setup could determine if a content is boring or not and be correct about it. Even if you've run some codes that could understand a set up or group of recurring phrase and automatically avoid or skip through, you've got to face the fact that, these phrases can still occur within a more useful topic or thread and as such, you just might have by that action missed a vital or much needed information. So, it very much goes down to you, going through the individual contents and skipping them or maybe upon noticing a particular sh*t poster, you just ignore all along.

Just put the user who does them on ignore.
There are several users, high ranking at that, who albeit aren't posting shitty topics, are posting boring topics, so just block them and problem solved.
Or mention them and create awareness of the problem, and maybe they'll change something

Boring literally means reluctant topics right? I don't know is there any way to hide particular thread on section but if you find it is not really useful then you can report it and most of the time it will be trashed if it is really not useful for the community.

Any 'boring topic' is a topic not worth discussion, and if it is not worth discussion then it should never have appeared in the first place. Given that most of the threads here run through their lifespan of value within a few days (if even that), you are probably best off reporting every single post you come across: I'm guessing at least 90% accuracy!

Unless, of course, it's not the topic who is boring, but you. ;)

BPIP extension adds a merit column, which is not quite an indicator of "anti-boringness" but might be used to gauge the value of a thread to some extent:

Now that I posted it I think merit per post would be even better.

But if you want to flag threads manually - wouldn't you have to read them, which kinda defeats the purpose of avoiding boring threads.

Boring is such a subjective sense. :P what you find boring maybe isn't for another user. So there's no objective way to eradicate boring topics like we can eradicate "spam". What you can do is just click on ignore on the users you think are creating most of the boring topics and then you don't have to deal with the boring topics they post :D

Boring means not interesting, while "reluctant" is a whole different word with completely different meaning (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/reluctant).

I might have missenterperted  OP, but what I think he wants is to ignore some topic which upon checking he established as boring, so it doesn't keep reappearing as people keep replying/bumping. So yeah, you would have to check it first but I don't think that would beat the purpose of "topic ignore" option.

About this bpip thing, I started using your extension few weeks ago but I didn't know about that merits per topic option. I just enabled it, useful stuff!

I don't think that dkbit98 asks for someone else to decide what's boring or not, he is asking for an option to do it by himself.

That being said, I don't think I ever came across forum with option like that. Then again, forums I used are mostly old school, bitcointalk style.

Ignore the worst offenders or, not quite what you're looking for, but you could start using the watchlist (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=90136.0) if you haven't already. Junk posts in Serious discussion (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=250.0)/Ivory Tower should be deleted more often if you report them than in other sections.

I don't have any kind of extension created by our fellow members instead I base it on the number of replies also we have some indicator on the lower part of the forum which is this[1]

Hello suchmoon, its this the total number of merits given to OP? or in the whole thread?, just a bit confusing in my part because I don't have this kind of extension.

It shows the sum of all Merit points awarded to all posts within a given thread. Here's the BPIP extension thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5224821.0

Yes, I have to open it, but then I want to hide it and not show it anymore, and that will make reading and writing much easier for me.
I said in first post that I could ignore some members, but then I would flag all their posts (I don't want that) and still see all post titles just in smaller size.
