Title: Bitcoin Core upgrade to HD question
Post by: duracom on December 18, 2020, 04:43:47 PM
Hi there,

I'm considering upgrading my wallet to HD by using the -upgradewallet flag but would like to know how this affects existing private keys.

1) Would the existing keys be kept as they are but any additional transactions after the upgrade are placed into the new HD set.

or

2) Would holdings in the non-HD set be moved into the new HD set by the upgrade process?

I'm asking as I would like to extract the existing keys to claim a load of forked coins but for safety don't want to place those private keys into extractor tools until I'm sure my original BTC holdings are safe.

I'm aware I could just send the coins to new addresses manually but to avoid spending if unnecessarily wondered if the HD wallet upgrade is enough.

Thanks in advance for your time!
