Title: Misplaced loaded opendime device , have address
Post by: Shimmyap on December 18, 2020, 04:44:54 PM
I have lost an open dime loaded device
And I have the address
Is there a way to withdraw funds without having the actual usb stick
Can I update files on another one and make a new device with same address

No, you won't be able to move funds from that address without having the private key which was stored on that OpenDime. Unless you have unsealed your device and copied the private key from it, there is nothing you can do.

Can’t I recreate the private key from a new device?

No, OpenDime does not work like other wallets; in fact, it isn't advertised as a wallet, but as a device for F2F transactions without broadcasting anything to the blockchain. You are not supposed to know the private key; that's why there was no backup option.

No, each openDime device has it's own unique, random private key.

Unless you can find that device, your money is gone.

Such a possibility would make the devices completely pointless, as well as making bitcoin itself obsolete. If you could recreate a private key from only having knowledge of the address, then anyone could steal anyone else's bitcoin at any time.

As above, your only option is to find that OpenDime device. In future, if you want a device in which you can recover the coins if you lose the device then you should look at a hardware wallet such as a Ledger or Trezor which provides you with a back up seed phrase which you can write down on paper.
