Title: [ LOOKING FOR]Open Air Case that Can hold Up to 8 cards
Post by: BitcoinPappi on November 27, 2011, 07:40:47 PM
Hi,

Is anyone selling open air cases that can mount up to eight cards ? If not any idea where I could get one made, that would be ready within the next 2 weeks ?

what motherboard and PSU are you going to use for 8 cards?

Personally I dont like to put more than 5 gpu's on one motherboard

I have found major stability issues, of course I have not tried it on the last two releases of the amd driver 11.10 11.11

I am trying to spend as less as possible to consolidate all 8 cards.  I had a old rig with 890fxa-gd70 that recenlty died. Had a  corsair tx950w PSU.Got some additional GPU's and wanted to build a single rig. The most I would probably need to get is a additional power supply

Any suggestions ?

Would it be cheaper to have 2 separate rigs ?

you will spend less money making 2 x 5 gpu rigs

and they will be much more stable

I have a spare 18-24 card rig (18 5830s over 3 boards). Cost me about 250 to make. Lexan base with mountings, adjustable back bar, mountings for 120mm fans. let me know

And yeah, run 5 card rigs. The sisters to this case only have 5 per board in here.

What stability issues did you have? I've only restarted my 8 card rig once in the past two months. I have more stability issues with my rig that has a 5970 and two 5870's

I did not try 8, I knew that there would be stability along with power issues and possibly damaging the motherboard
there is not much real benefit to having 8 on a mb instead of 5

what Board and PSU are you using? You must have a crazy psu or two of them or something

Also are you running windows  or linux?

what are the benefits to having 8 on a board?

Dual PSU's, Linux

  • Consolidation
  • Power consumption
  • Mobility

Consolidation and mobility for ease of use. If you have any problem its easier to restart one machine and mobility because my power cost is rated for an initial 600KW of power at 0.04 and jumps to 0.14 after so my machine gets moved once a month every once in a while; yes, it's worth it.
I use less power than you would running two dedicated rigs. I only have to power one CPU, 1gb of RAM, one USB and one mobo.

Board is a MSI BigBang Marshal B3. It has 10 rear USB ports with room for a lot more. When I move to FPGA's this one rig will be the ultimate hashing beast.
