Title: Mining Ethereum with 4gb RX470 cards in 2021
Post by: dgreen2 on January 10, 2021, 01:47:53 AM
Hello folk,
Ethereum price is skyrocketing  :o. I decided to go back to mining using my old rig from 2017
Surprisingly enough it still turns on!.. (after collecting dust for more than 2 years)
I have 2x RX470 4gb modded cards running on Windows 7 (with 4gb RAM) . Today I tried running the old dusty rig and this is the list of problems I found:
-Claymore miner is not working anymore ("cannot set epoch" error... I've already searched for this error and I will fix
it by replacing with another miner)
-One card is not recognized by Windows 7 (maybe it is only a problem of some cable connection, I will check it better in the next days)

Wht miner do you suggest to use? Do you think it is still profitable to use 4gb RX 470 cards in 2021?
Thanks for your help!

Will soon give some updates!

Unfortunately you came too late. A few weeks ago the DAG grew past >4GB and you cannot mine ETH anymore on those cards. If you still really want to mine, there is a special software called lolminer that lets you mine past 4GB but the speeds are slower with the same power consumption.

Before if you got 30MH/s per 140 Watts, right now you would get 15MH/s per 140 Watts. So it should still be profitable because price of ETH is high but seems like a better alternative would be just to sell the GPU and buy an 8GB variant.

Besides ETH there are other things to mine like ETC but the profits are horrible. Something like $0.15 per day with $0.10 kwh power.

How about the trick of inserting a single 8gb vram gpu in the first slot of PCIe and insert the rest 4gb in second slot and others? I've watched a video on YouTube that confirms that this works, miners only need to detect the first VRAm in slot 1 and used that for all available GPU on motherboard

Try to use TRM or Phoenix miner. Your hashrate will be about 17-21MH max and will slowly fall, but it is still profitable, may be till the end of January.

It doesn`t work now.

At the moment the best option is lolMiner with hash of 22-24Mhs well configurated, it will continue go down but you will be able with the price of ETH until first of March...

If you go on ebay and Amazon right now you will see that most RX570 and 580 with 4gb are very cheap to buy simply because there are many selloff, they are now less profitable for mining, if Ethereum classic is presently Profitable to mine it would have been better because ETC algo accepts 4gb cards, you can get the 30+mhs from a RX570 4gb version mining ETC but profit wise? It's not worth it

I am really sorry to hear you switched off your miner 3 years ago.  I have kept mine running non-stop since 2017,  thinking that ETH price might one day go above $1000 once again.  I have been hodling ETH since the previous bull run in 2017.
Recently, I sold all my Polaris 4GB cards when the hash rate dropped to 21MH/s or so.  They were still profitable as per today's ETH price.
If I were you, I would sell them since mining alternatives with them are not too good right now.  You could mine ETC or RVN, if you believe in a future for those coins.
If you want to mine ETH or ETC, then consider using Phoenixminer or Team Red miner as Claymore apparently is not maintained any more.

Bad news: the rig stopped working!  >:(
yesterday I tried turning it on and it was kind of ok (despite one of the 2 cards not been recognized)... but today the motherboard doesn't turn on at all :o
Some leds turn on and the CPU fan starts running at a "strangely" LOW speed. It feels like there is some power supply issue, like the motherboard doesn't receive enough power...  It may be some really stupid thing like some power supply cable not making contact or something... maybe caused by the huge amount of dust (I made the mistake of leaving the rig rotting in open air for 3 years!)
I will investigate in the next days... I will have to dismantle the all rig hoping to solve the problem...

I stopped mining in 2018 after the Ethereum's price plummeted and saw that it was not profitable anymore (my electricy cost is relatively high...) I kind of lost interested in this hobby after that...

Claymore miner isn't working anymore already and you can only get around 15 to 20mhs out of a 4gb RX470 and RX580 right now using lol miner, it's finally time where 6 and 8gb memory are very important,  the only option left for 4gb cards is Ravencoin or Ethereum Classic

I disconnected the second and last GPU card (with giant effort!  :o....)
and tried running the machine...
There is undoubtedly some SERIOUS POWER SUPPLY ISSUE  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o,  looks like the entire shit is running undervolted...
(fan running at half speed, no leds turning on at all, hard disk doesn't even start, no beep sounds apart from a strange soft noise from the buzzer like it's trying to startup but then it fucking dies...)
On top of that I'm totally unable to remove the 24 pin ATX power connector from the motherboard... looks like the plastic has MELT  and is totally stuck on the slot!! :o
the situation is really bad....   :o :o
But now it's time to post more on tom's hardware, will wear a tech wizard's hat for the following days.. hoping to be back here soon...

You sure the power supply isnt set to 220-240v and its on 110v or vis-versa?

The melted 24 pin mobo plug is scary.

Title: Re: Mining Ethereum with 4gb RX470 cards in 2021

That 24pin is always difficult to remove. Basically I remember once I ended up ripping off the connector off the motherboard because I pulled too hard. Just take a flat head screwdriver and pry it out on one end and the other and eventually it will come out.

This 24pin should NEVER really melt. The only time I had one melt was years ago when mining litecoin and using ribbon risers which took +5V from the motherboard, if you got like 5-6 gpus in 1 motherboard sometimes the +5V melted on the 24pin connector. However the +12V shouldn't receive too much current to melt. Your situation is very strange.

It's finally over for rx470 and 580 that has oy 4gb video ram, they are still fairly profitable right now but hashrates are never the same again, you can only get up to 20mhs from such cards now, the only option left is mining Ravencoin or Ethereum Classic, I have a source selling rx570 4gb for 80$ each, used gpu 😂😂😂😂😂

It will be wise to sell off any gpu with 4gb memory right now before it's too late, gamers still want this cards so much but the earlier the better, sell them and buy new graphic card with latest architecture, they are future proof and will be well supported in driver compatibility wise

Good idea, there are gamers who loves using this cards, if OP is willing to take that gamble and adds up some funds for his upgrade
the ride with this current ETH pump still possible.

The earlier the better, while there are still people who will buy your cards if you sell it now the best chance also to join the ride.

Still profitable even you are now just getting dust, the best thing is ETH have the better chance to grow in value,
the more rise the more money for you if you'll going to take the risk.

It's still worthwhile for a few weeks, I am getting a hashrate of about 22mh/s at the moment but that will drop to 16mh/s from the 21st Jan.

As other have said probably worth trying to sell any 4gb cards to buy 8gb cards.

Now it makes no sense to sell 4GB video cards, because new video cards are very expensive, like used 8GB video cards.
It should be borne in mind that used video cards could have been in mining for 3 years or more.
It is better to continue mining Ethereum Classic and other coins in Q1 2021 until new video cards appear on the market at a good price

If you have 4gb RX470 it's better to keep mining with lolminer because it still gives 15 to 20 mhs but if you end up selling the gpu you won't be able to buy 8gb gpu right now because they are overpriced, even a RX580 8gb costs 350$ to 400$ right now, keep mining with the 4gb cards till mining isn't profitable anymore

RX470 4gb is not going to give you same old hashrate anymore because the ETH DAG is now over 4gb, you will need to swap that gpu for a 6gb or 8gb VRAM gpu or keep mining with the 4gb gpu @15mhs per second like many are getting

I'm mining Ether by using only 1 card (RX470 4gb)...
hashrate: 0.45 mh/s  ???
is it normal that the hashrate is so low.. or I'm missing something in the configuration???

..on top of that, I also have the problem that the USB wifi dongle adapter I'm using for the rig, has a very unstable connection and internet keeps falling again and again...
I heard this could be caused by some interfarance with the graphics card...

Go to ERG, make 100% more profit than ETC. ERG can also dual mine with zilliqa.
My RX570 do around 64mh per card mining ERG.
Tradeable on Probit or Tradeogre.

Also good profits mining Haven Protocol, and it use less electricity. RX570 hashrate is 900h - 1000h per card.

Go to the lolminer thread and read the last few pages. From what I recall you were able to mine with 4GB only if you put it inside the actual x16 pcie 3.0 slot of the motherboard. Which means you can't use a riser. And this way you used the DDR3 system ram to store some of the DAG and got speeds around 25mh/s. This was a few weeks ago and no idea if it still works.

You can also get away with 2 GPUs if you put one in the x8 and x8 slots, similar to a crossfire setup with games. However your speeds will be slower however it still will be profitable given that ETH is $4K right now. If you got a 6 GPU rig, then it won't work obviously. You need to put those GPUs in different motehrboards or mine something else all together.

Right now even 4GB cards are profitable to mine crypto, coins like ETC and Ravencoin have grown up in value and also more profitable for small cards too, I'm not sure if zombie mode in lolminer still works for Rx AMD cards anyone on here still using this?

RX470 4GB is very popular video cards even now. I mine Ethereum Classic on them and regret that at the beginning of the year I sold some video cards for $ 140. I could earn more in these 3 months

Wonders will never seize to happen in crypto space, who would have thought that Rx cards with 4gb memory still have chance to making profits for their owners?  I sold five of these cards for few dollars before crypto rally starts, such a painful decision

hashrate 29 MH/s

the problem my rig has, is that wifi connection keeps dropping occasionally...I'm working on it...

Try using lolminer first with zombie mode activated and if that doesn't work you should mine ETC instead, don't worry this coin is pretty profitable for 4gb cards presently

Yes either mine another coin or get a gpu with more than 4gb of vram.

This old trick is played out.  Worked for a little while but now will not.

You made me curious.I have a few rigs in total that do 210 Mhsh in Ethereum Classic but I am using Phoenix there mining ETC+ZIL and receiving good payouts like near 300 or a bit more dollars a month. What can be the payout of 210 Mhsh by using zergpool.com with your miner, does it have any difference or it is only to receive payouts in Ethereum rather than in Ethereum Classic.

Nothing special, you can mine with every miner etc on zergpool and let you pay in eth or btc. He's just doing a little advertising for his new very good miner. And by the way, use a better miner -> phoenixminer is a bad miner. Bad support, no new features for months, inflated hashrates and so on.

My suggestion! Learn more about mining -> 4GB is not enough for mining eth  ::)

This is how you can configure ETC+ZIL on miningpoolhub.com / shardpool.io with tbminer. Inside the miningpoolhub page you can configure to autosell the ETC to get ethereum.

Set ETC_WALLET=(miningpoolhub username)
Set ZIL_WALLET=(zil_wallet)

:loop
   TBMiner --algo ethash --hostname eu1-zil.shardpool.io --port 3333 --wallet %ETC_WALLET% --server_passwd %ZIL_WALLET%@europe.etchash-hub.miningpoolhub.com:20615 --worker_name %computername%  --xintensity 256
   timeout 10
goto :loop

on zergpool you can mine ethereum classic and get payed in ethereum:

set WALLET=(ethereum adress)
set PAYOUT_CURRENCY=ETH

:loop
   TBMiner --algo etchash --hostname etchash.eu.mine.zergpool.com --port 9997 --wallet %WALLET% --server-passwd c=%PAYOUT_CURRENCY%,ID=%computername% --xintensity 128
   timeout 10
goto :loop

Play with the --xintensity to get higher hashrate.
