Title: Decentralized social network
Post by: thereader on January 10, 2021, 01:42:27 PM
It seems to me that now (in light of the growing repression against the right-wing conservatives) is the time to create or develop a decentralized social network or community.

If you have such a code - write to me here or in telegram (@RobertSands)

I don't think most people have a code for decentralized social network laying around somewhere. Its not a simple application at all, and it requires a lot of development. Such apps do exists today, but are not used as much due to practicality. I really do hope that you have though of some technical breakthrough that will make them more accessible to general population.

whatever, but it certainly requires a good knowledge of the code itself and a clear understanding of what it is for. Social network application requires a lot of daily maintenance work, updates, monitoring new trends and implementation etc... it is not a job for one man, but for the team.
But if someone in this case OP had enough skills to maintain such a code, probably they don't need to buy it from someone, he will develop it himself.

@marttimalmi AKA Sirius Bitcoin dev in 2009-2011 and second bitcoiner Built a decentralized social networking application. https://iris.to
Contact him and he may give you the source code. Building a decentralized platform will not be difficult, the problem is persuading people to continue using it and ensuring that it works without the need for external funding or a violation of privacy and the need for some centralization.

I see no point in building a platform from scratch. Enough code generated to use existing solutions.

What about the voice.com that already is working?  This is almost complete already and developed by Dan Larimer of EOS.

A platform where Donald Trump can do whatever he wants and not end up getting banned like on Twitter and Facebook. I think there is a counterpart of this decentralize social media platform on TRON as well. This I think is what we all need.

@thereader

Making an alternative social network is not the most difficult part. Making the conservatives moving from Parler's website to your is another task.

Take a look at Mastodon https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon
It's a distributed and decentralized social network and the front end is very similar to Twitter. You can even make it usable on Android or IOS using API
In my country, we have a governmental agency using it (don't ask me which because I don't remember :P)

@eckmar

I'm lazy to check one by one but there are surely a lot of them with their code open source

Thanks for the detailed answer. The list will come in handy.

There are some attempts to create decentralized social media but it is not so easy as it may seem and there are many problems like speed, moderation and spam.
I think Mastodon, Voice and few others are trying to be decentralized but we need to learn from their mistakes and I don't think writing new code for social media will bring the people in.

As I described above, writing code is not a priority. The priority is to find like-minded people (I see some potential in this) with whom you can already decide what to do next.
