Title: Antminer S9 - hashboard detected but no work
Post by: naughtyju on January 11, 2021, 05:49:59 PM
Hi everybody. I ve just received my S9k, with 3 boards, but only 2 work. I wd like understand why the third doesnt work. Before my post, I check all 6-pins form power supply, all pins of connectors, I open the S9 and look all boards, all it's ok. After, I change the channel of bad board from chain[1] to chain[0]. Edit : I forgot, of course I check on the forum before this post ! The firmware : Hardware Version 13.10.1.3 Kernel Version Linux 4.6.0-xilinx-gff8137b-dirty #25 SMP PREEMPT Fri Nov 23 15:30:52 CST 2018 File System Version Thu Jul 11 20:09:08 CST 2019 CGminer Version 4.9.0Below, the kernel log : => the not working board is on chain[0]. It's strange, the board asks, the 60 ASIC frequencies are ok, but the test of "bring up chain 0" failed and the number of ASIC is wrong (50 only found). I dont understand why. Could you held me please ? Thanks you. Can you mine with 2 boards an do 9th? Most likely your board is toast s9k's were not the best model.
I mine 2 s9k's with 2 boards.

First of all, I should say thank you for posting such a detailed and neat question, unlike 99% of the new members here who don't do basic troubleshooting before posting, heck they don't even post any details and expect us to tell them what's going on with their mining gear. So your problem is 2021-01-11 17:01:52 driver-btm-soc.c:3767:check_asic_num_without_power_off: chain 0, find asic num = 50 2021-01-11 17:01:52 driver-btm-soc.c:3850:check_asic_num: chian 0 check asic number failed! S9k has 60 Asics on each chain/hash board, the signal here was interpreted at the 50th chip, which suggests that either chip 49 or 50 has a problem, the problem could be a loose heatsink or a dead chip. You have bought the worst mining gear bitmain has ever made, oh, not just bitmain, the worst anybody can make, it's bad enough that nobody can make a gear that is bad as it is, you follow the logic? I have written a complete topic about, its title is WANRNING! Do Not Buy Antminer S9k (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5218440.0), the failure rate for these gears is well above 70%, so please - be prepared. Now back to your problem, you need to physically inspect the hashboard, apply some pressure on the heatsinks to see which ones fall, and then update the thread.

Gave you a merit keep posting and you will getup of newbie jai and become a jr member. if it mines with the two boards like mine does at least you are ⅔ of a loaf so to speak . I keep the dead board in the center slot and have it detached completely . so the software only tests the two boards. I have found this is the best way to run s9k's the two boards on left and right simply do not overheat. and the controller does not even try to do the center board as it is fully detached so it boots and starts mining a tiny bit faster than a 3 board model. It runs cooler and lowers your fan speeds as another bonus. https://i.imgur.com/PhyqBnb.png (https://i.imgur.com/PhyqBnb.png)

Thanks you every body for your responses. Nice.
@philipma1957 : I will make your config tks, effectivelly 2/3 is better than nothing. Like you, I hash 9 TH/s. @mikeywith : It s my first worker, I sorry to not view your post before to buy the S9K. Now it 's a good way to learn, thanks to your helps of course.
Nevertheless, the bad board isnt dead because I ve a respond - I can try something. About @mikeywith 's solution, it's strange to not have a dash if a heatsinks fall or dead chip. But tks u very much for your idea - that's I need !
Anyway, I will try your solution tomorrow, I will inspect, try to remove the 49th and 50ht heatsinks with my stripper, try to check if the 49th and 50ht chips are ok.
But, I dont know where is the number location of chips on the hashboard. Maybe it writes on the board - I will see. edit : I found : https://www.zeusbtc.com/manuals/repair-guide/Antminer-S9k-Hash-board-Repair-Guide.pdf
See you for the next.

If you have the tools, then follow this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WH7g61d90w , the voltage and resistance of RI,BO, CLKO, and etc values might be different on the S9k, but usually, every row of chips is considered a domain which should give you the same readings with small variance, on the S9 the top row and bottom row read higher values than the middle rows, if you need more info regarding this do let me know I'll see what I can collect. The video shows a fixture tool that you don't really need now (not worth it just to fix a broken S9k board) so just test all the chips manually one by one, start with 49,50,51, and then the row which contains them, usually the bad chip/s will be around that area, it's also common for chip no.0 to go missing, and then finally test all of them. Keep in mind that to test the voltage the miner needs to be sending signals to the chips, which only happens for a few seconds before it stops, you can however test the resistance offline (no need to be plugged in) and then confirm the voltage, you have a few seconds from the time you turn it on until it stops, if you have the time, just power off and on as many times as you need to get all the readings, you save over a $100 on the fixture tool by doing so.

Hi. Juste some news. Of course, on the S9k model, pins test are very very very small and under heatsinks...
So, I have moved all heatsinks from uc49 to uc60, the last line (UC51-60) + 2 references (uc49-50). It's easier to check the voltage and resistance. I realize my measures with the minus on the otherside heatsink, and the other on pins test.
I have a resistance on all pins test and all ASICs. I have a tension of 1.7V on the RI pin test for the Uc49 and Uc50. But nothing on the RI pin test of Uc51, Uc52, Uc53. I think the Uc51 is dead - that seems to be a recurrent default on S9 antminer. And so no power goes to the next ones, because they are in-line.
Now, I will buy ASICs BM1393B and a 9mm-adapter for my thermal cleaner.
See you.

HI
i have same problem with s9se 17 th. but suddenly i bring my home from farm(minifarm ;D) to test i realize it work in home no problem.
i think problem solved i take miner to farm but not worked , so i bring to home and it worked.
i dont what is reason ? i think some thing about frequency Interference.

I have the same problem, plate chain(2) that does not start, you have an idea of the problem. thank you.
You have to post the complete kernel log, and a screenshot of the miner's status page. posts in old topics can be hardly spotted, you should start your own topic and provide all the details needed to troubleshoot it. i have same problem with s9se 17 th. but suddenly i bring my home from farm(minifarm ;D) to test i realize it work in home no problem.
This could be a voltage issue, what is the voltage at home and at the farm? S9es PSU's aren't very sensitive to voltage, but if the PSU is bad and not yet dead then voltage drop will affect it, you may troubleshoot this by trying a different PSU in the farm.
