Title: Paper wallet help, Please!
Post by: Braq2000 on January 25, 2021, 04:04:45 PM
I have a paper wallet that i created several years ago, and I'm trying to recover it.  When i made it originally it allowed me to print out a paper wallet with 2 QR codes.  One says load and verify and the other says spend and has a 58 digit private key.  So I downloaded mycelium and go to cold storage.  If I scan the load and verify bar code is shows up with the amount that's in the account.  Perfect.  When I scan the spend QR code it asks for the passcode, and then it tells me that it is not correct.  The only thing I can think of is that it's 2 different encryptions.  Mycelium wants a BIP38 password and being 58 digits long I think it might be s different kind of encryption.  Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

If it's that like the image, then it's probably BIP38 encryption. That's the encryption method used for bitaddress.org.

@ranochigo it looks very similar.  It's blue but has the same layout.  Any idea why the pass word isn't working then?

The 58 characters aren't the password. The password is something you entered by yourself when you created the paper wallet. Mycelium needs both.

I've used MyCelium to spend my paper wallet before and it has worked perfectly.

You can try using Bitaddress to extract the private key. Here's the github link: https://github.com/pointbiz/bitaddress.org. I would recommend you to run on a clean computer without an internet connection. In the wallet details you should be able to decrypt your BIP38 key, if it was. After which, you can import it into Electrum or MyCelium to spend it.

I've read that someone had thi problem some years ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/31ekyd/sweeping_my_large_paper_wallet_with_mycelium/
It was "fixed" by using Blockchain.com wallet, which I don't recommend ( I don't recommend online wallets).
But maybe you have a chance to try from a computer/laptop with a better wallet?

I've just tested it (password: "LoyceV"):

This works fine (except for the fact that the address is empty).

I think everyone has answered your questions sufficiently, but just to clarify:

The 58-character code is the private key that is also contained in the "spend" QR code that you scanned. I assume that the first character is a "6", which means that it is encrypted.

Mycelium is trying to decrypt it and is asking you for its password. It cannot be decrypted without the password. Hopefully, you can remember it or you have written it down somewhere. Otherwise the coins are lost.
