Don't let the FOMO (fear of missing out) you do stupid things. Also, this is Bitcoin mining area, not ETH. See Mining (Altcoins) for ETH and other altcoins Title: Re: mining with laptop bad idea?? Post by: PhoenixZephyrus on January 27, 2021, 07:24:40 AM It is a bad idea. First off, you probably wont profit for the risk to be worth it, due to electricity costs due to the power requirement. Secondly, a lot of heat is generated while mining and its just a bad idea to try that with a laptop CPU/GPU which is pretty close to the red line in terms of cooling. You have an RTX 2060, so it can be anywhere from the 90W-115W variant. The yields on a laptop are significantly low compared to ASICs which are made for this use specifically, and you will generate a lot of heat which will cause your laptop to fail. How fast, you might ask? Well it all depends on your specific model, how much airflow, cooling capacity is there in your laptop, its all model-specific so its not possible to give estimates, but be rest assured that your device's lifespan, battery life, and thermal performance will significantly reduce over time.
As for a cooling pad, they generally do not help as much, but since your laptop's bottom is off, I guess that helps a bit. But you have to know that long term operation like that and mining via laptop GPUs for ETH/BTC isn't really beneficial now, maybe some altcoins, if even that. But generally, no, not recommended, just not worth the risk. TLDR: No Title: Re: mining with laptop bad idea?? Post by: Furryball on January 27, 2021, 04:29:22 PM I have a friend that mines with a alienware laptop that have gtx1080ti inbuilt but here is what he does, he only mine for few hours everyday and in a room with air conditioner running, the truth is laptops aren't good for long term mining, you will end up burmo some components in the motherboard, buy fairly used GPUs for mining if money is what's holding you back
