Title: Mining rig confusion
Post by: New_order on January 29, 2021, 10:19:55 AM
Hi peeps, is it a good choice to build a mining rig with RX570 8gb in 2021? The reason why I bring this up is because I want to build a mining rig and my thought was with GTX1660 super but I luckily see RX570 8gb at cheaper price, like 150$ off from the gtx1660 super price @460$ each

The reason why I hesitate is because RX570 architecture is old, can't tell if miners update will keep supporting the card for another 8 years

I am running a small rig with 3 GPUs using RX580 8 GB cards. Those are working fine. The RX 570 isn't much different from this. As far as "support" is concerned then you may want to consider the fact that the Nvidia cards tend to support a more diverse set of hashing algorithms. ETH will go the staking way and the AMD cards are mostly suited for Ethash. For other algorithms, the return is not as good as compared to a 1660.

So if you are looking for a longer timeframe, 1660 would be the way to go. With its better hashrate, you will have a quicker RoI. The higher initial investment also means that you can stay in the game longer when ETH goes PoS.

As always, don't bet the house on mining because hashrates increase, price reductions can make the projected "profits" uncertain.

RX580 must be 8GB only. Such GPU will mine ETH without problems but it uses about 110-130Wt. 1660s uses about 80Wt with the same hashrate and it is more useful for another mining algorithms. But for start - RX580 is ok. It will help you to understand smth about mining at practice and to decide what you want later.

We have to look at the advantage and disadvantage sides, I think the gtx1660 is better because they are more profitable on other algorithms than AMD, assuming Ethereum switch to PoS some day you will still make good money out of the cards compares to AMD, Ethereum algorithm are the best on AMD cards

If your electricity expenses is cheap then that RX570 8gb is a good buy, you will get your ROI back faster, even if you want to keep mining for many years to come this RX570 got you covered because it has 8gb memory vs 6gb memory of the gtx 1660 super

You can less your cost of investment by buying two of the RX570 8gb and two gtx1660 super too, they can work in same motherboard but make sure the Nvidia card is inserted into the first PCIe slot, I think this is the best way

$460 for a 1660 is very expensive...like all gpu right now.

I buy gpus when prices are normal....during times like this i either just mine or sell gpu....
