Title: What is the most discreet way to hide your crypto from thieves?
Post by: Abiky on January 29, 2021, 12:26:05 PM
Recently, it came to my curiosity in finding ways on how to properly hide Bitcoin from prying eyes. For a hardcore crypto enthusiast like me, storing Bitcoin safely without driving unwanted attention is a must. Thanks to Bitcoin's portability, one can easily store thousands of dollars (USD) worth of Bitcoin in even the smallest places you could ever imagine. What comes to my mind is storing Bitcoin on a microSD card, put it on a small "Ziploc" bag, and tape it underneath a table. But I think this could by discovered by a smart thief. I've heard about "nanoSD cards" from Huawei which are even smaller than traditional microSD cards. But not many devices support this. A small piece of paper with the mnemonic/seed could work, but it can be damaged with water and fire.

This makes me wonder what is the most discreet (and efficient) way to hide your crypto from thieves? I'm open to suggestions. Feel free to share your wild and crazy ideas about it here. Thanks in advance. :)

Do not copy recovery seed in one place, you can write down in a ledger book and copy inside a pen drive and keep in a safe location but here is what I deep, I get a stainless plate and carve the recovery seed on it, this is way stronger than paper and pen drive..

I find hardware wallet to be the best way of storing bitcoin though, no other than this

I also think that a hardware wallet is the most reliable way to store cryptocurrency. The main thing is to use the 25th word (passphrase).
There is one more interesting way to store a SEED phrase:

I am the best way to hide something, is to keep it in plain sight of everyone, but so that no one can blow that you are hiding it.

Safety deposit box at home? then hide it not just from the prying eyes of thieves but to everyone else, maybe in your room and build a secret compartment.

Or if someone is really paranoid then get a deposit box in a bank near your place. And you can store everything, not just your crypto asset, but all personal things that really needs protection for many years.

Interesting. Storing coins in memory cards did interest me, mainly due to the multi-purpose nature of memory card and how affordable they can be for most people around the world.
It doesn't sound resistant to fire or resistant to other harsh conditions, unfortunately.

One of my preferred methods to store keys is the use of strong, thin and bendable wires. It's an idea that could interest alot of people if demonstrated. And you could construct a device (or buy one if available) for shaping the wires quickly, in cryptic manner. After shaping the wires, you tie them together and hang on something or hide somewhere safe

live a discreet life don't let too many people know what you are involved in, if people know what you are into and all your wealth is in the private key that you kept, it will be easy to target you, live a modest life, discreet and modest lifestyle are two things that will save you and also be educated on how to keep your private key.

Stay low key and don't let others know that you have a huge amount of holdings because if you'll let everyone know about it, thieves might have you as their target. Keeping things in private could actually protect you. Keep your private key safe and earn silently. Have enough knowledge on how to keep your funds safe in a secured wallet.

I don't think you should worry about water/fire

Just make two copies, check them often (like 3 times a year each). Keep them in separate places, like different houses.

Personally, I just hide the two piece of paper very well, and I am not worried about it.

A thief who enters my house would not find any of them.  And they are easily accessible to me. This is what matters the most.

Just create some paper wallets and just put them between some books. No thief would check all the books in a bookcase.

But probably no thief would even go in your home and try to find some crypto. The chance is way too low that the house where he breaks in got some crypto.

Imho combination of hardware and paper wallet.
But best bet is privacy, ie people not knowing you hold any crypto. That's your best bet, just act poor

Is it for short term holding? or long term holding, like you're not going to move your Bitcoin anytime soon? because you can just store your Bitcoin in a paper wallet then print that, delete every traces, and hide it in an atic. If you're hardcore, you can tattoo your private key in your thigh or something  ;D

Though I mean first of all, don't tell anyone that you are into crypto. if you can't help it, at least tell it to someone you can truly trust. Most people would bother you especially when Bitcoin is being so famous right now.

I love your idea of hiding a crypto .
That's Verry fun and thieves won't thought of looking under the table because it was only a table anyway but theieves commonly attack at the aparadors and cabinets or under the mattress of the sofa but I'm scared that what if kids will find your SD card because kids always hide under the table. Sdcards are also prone to damage easily  .
I have lots of SD card in different brands and spaces but all are broke and decide to not use again . Won't you try hardware wallets instead and don't use paper if your exporting your seeds and keys

Correct, taking this as first discreet step, also avoid social media with your identity, you can educate people if you want, and interested on guiding others on the Internet, but identity hidden can go far in your protection, a man that keeps his shit in a private toilet wouldn't fear it stinks out in the public, avoid, constant replies to crypto-currency article on public post with linkable account, you can create a business account for that. After following this first method every other discreet plans will be activated to work better.

A hardware wallet is the most reliable, storing it there not only does it gives you security, it also gives you the ability to store it offline, not only that but you also have the ability to store it somewhere safe, a nano sd card is actually good, no doubt it's a practical way to store your crypto, the only problem left is to store it somewhere safe and somewhere in the house where a thief won't expect it.

For some this is a hard thing to do, the only precaution you need to take is to avoid boasting about your investment in social media or in the public and if you can do this basic thing then no one will target you. For many it will be hard to contain themselves in a crowd and usually boast the amount of money they made through cryptocurrency and so is the reason they will be targeted.

First of all the two methods you have mentioned, both the Nano SD Card and the paper wallet can all be destroyed by water and fire. I don’t think thieves will know that you are into cryptocurrency if you’re keeping it to yourself, unless you’re the type that talks about it in public and get yourself involved in any crypto conversation which will expose you as a target to anyone that will have such intentions of stealing it from you. So, the first thing is to just keep shut and mind your business.

You can store your crypto anywhere, you can make use of even your smartphone and store it in a good mobile wallet and then use of one those privacy apps to hide the crypto wallet app so that anyone that opens your phone wouldn’t see anything related to crypto. Then you can use Trezor hardware wallet and keep it somewhere safe at home.

A hardware wallet is the only solution since it is not connected to the internet however there's no such thing as safe if it's on the internet you are vulnerable to online thieves and if physically they could stole it to you however there's a password to it that only you could open.

Put the SD card inside time capsule and cement it under your room floor or garage floor. No one will ever get it even the smartest of all time unless he see you burying it on the floor.

Not letting them know that you have crypto or probably buy a ledger and write down your private key buy a vault bury it somewhere or probably memorize your private key or 24 words recovery seed. With that no one will going to steal it from you.

Hardware wallet are sure the best ways to store bitcoin and other crypto currencies, but for starters who can't afford a hardware wallet, you can get a good bitcoin mobile wallet but you have to keep your private keys in a very secure place.
For example, I have been using mobile wallets since 2016 I got into crypto, I've never had any issues of wallet hack or any thing near that, I used alot of wallets like coinomi, myetherwallet, Imtoken, metamax, monarch wallet, am currently using trust wallet and I've never hard any issues with any of this wallets.

Banks? I mean you do know that you could put anything you want on a bank vault right? There are personalized bank vaults, not those huge funny "let's go rob a banks vault" type of thing, those are rarely in some places, others do not even have a huge one, it is just a regular room size usually.

However what I am talking about is the regular personal vault things that are basically drawers but opens with keys from you and the bank worker, so you can go there and put anything you want and nobody can open it without your key or the banks key, if they steal your key, they still have to convince them that they are you, and bank won't bite it, so basically it is as safe as it gets (pun intended).

You could have like 10 different usb and put it on 10 different bank and make sure that none of that would get hurt, or just do it for one bank and put 2 copies that should normally be enough.

Maybe just split your privkey into several parts and store it somewhere you can remember. I mean, imagine if you store several parts of your privkey between many storage media and somewhat hidden it's gonna be a hell for the thieves trying to find it and it can't be exposed easily.
Also, by splitting like this you can create multiple copy incase you forgot where you put one part of your privkey. Encryption also could boost the safety of your crypto.

In fact, initially you need not to pretend that you own some kind of cryptocurrency assets, so that a real thief does not look for secret keys to your assets. The main thing is to ensure that there is no leakage of classified information into the network. In addition, the main thing is not to attract any attention of hackers, so that they do not begin to be interested in your data.

I trust hardware wallet to secure my coins and did not share that address anywhere where I keep my bitcoins  but you are concerned how to secure your coins from theif  for that you must shuffle some words of your keys that you can remember and thus nobody can access that.

Keeping it on a card like micro SD is also fine and you put it in an easy to spot such as an open space so people won't realize it's important.
people will think someone is hiding things in a difficult place so we do the opposite.

You can use all of the above you've mentioned and use a bank vault to keep your private keys, you will have to pay a yearly fee but the benefits outweighs the cost, your private keys are safe in a John Wick movie John kept a vault from one bank to safeguard his important documents , just choose the right bank to keep your vault.

I will put my bitcoin in hardware wallet and spread it. Let say uou have 10 bitcoin then spread it in to 4-5 hardware wallet so when bitcoin reach $100k people will not notice your wallet. And also put your hardware wallet in the safest place in the world, i heard many people who has a lot of btc put their btc in xapo, xapo have safest place to store your off line wallet.

I will tell you about my life!

Currently, I have a quite comfortable and peaceful life, my job is also very simple to sell some items online. And that's probably not how I generate income in my everyday life, this market gives me more opportunities and I love it. But what about my property, I am very assured because no one knows what I have. People still know that I am a normal person as they see it, from there the way I see it is to live normally, you will not have to fear anything. The more you fear it will happen, the faster it will come to you.

I think the best way to hide your own crypto from thieves is by concealing your interest in crypto and not sharing your portfolio with others so that they won't build any interest in stealing from you. If ever they know that you have a ton of crypto it would be better for you to put it up into a hard wallet like a ledger and make a partition into your hodlings by putting it on multiple ledgers (this is advisable if you know that someone is threatening your assets).

I think there is no excellent way to hide crypto wallets keys or tokens from thieves; if there were excellent ways then we would not have new platforms offering different alternatives and method.

MY OPINION: I think the safest way when it comes to hiding your crypto from thieves is to choose a single method to store your seed phrases and then protect it. If you want to keep your seed phrases on email; then open a new email, back it up with the 3 2fa options, never use it for airdrop, bounty or personal uses. Save up your keys there and do not log in the email; just remember ur log in information. And never use your investment wallets for airdrop or bounties; key word investment

Doing all that in the first paragraph will even make you get paranoid whenever anyone gets close to where you kept it unknowingly and that can give you away. What about disaster happening in the house where you stored it and destroying all traces of it?

Several piece of papers of seed pharse in the house more than enouhg as for me
This is the easiest and coolest way to do it for me also. But may be it is not for people who hold alot of bitcoin.

Its secure from people, but if any disaster happen, maybe it will hard to rediscover your treasury inside.
My idea is print the passphrase on something (not paper) which waterproof and fireproof, but print it on really small size, so you need tools to read it for backup.

Decoy money in a semi easy location so someone searching Will find it but not in the first few seconds.  Make it enough that it looks like a small stash.  500 bucks or something.  and for those that are a little more paranoid.   Hardware wallet inside a Faraday cage made to look like a mouse or Rat trap.  can even put a dead rat in it !

Silly but not the point.

Use Monero. That way no one can link your transactions to your identity.  So no one knows you have any Monero in the first place. Safest money is the one no one knows it exist in the first place.

Depends on what kind of thief you're afraid of. The one that goes inside for a few minutes when you cut grass in the garden, or the one who watches your house for days until you finally go abroad or to another town for a day and then goes in and spends hours searching the house.
A card under the table will survive the first but not the second type. When they know they have time they'll break everything and check every drawer.

It's not a problem. You buy a card reader that connects to USB port. You only need 1 to be able to read the card with any device.

So yeah I think going overkill is definitely possibly  ;)

I myself also looking for a safe way to store my Bitcoin in a very secure wallet, so that it will avoid thieves. I think storing our bitcoin data on micro SD / nanoSD is also very prone to data damage. which is feared that the microSD / nanoSD is damaged or corrupt.

Hardware wallets are still the best choice for storing our crypto. I don't have to bother looking for the safest place to store recover seeds, I will write it
on a sheet of paper and then I put the paper into a plastic bag. After that I will save it in a deposit box at the bank. So it is very safe from thieves or fire.
Indeed, the costs incurred are quite expensive, because we have to pay rental fees to the bank. If you want cheap ways there is definitely a risk,
it depends on your own choice.

Buy a laptop and never connect it to any internet connection, by this you can securely save your Bitcoin. I have a friend who are doing this and he also encourage me to do the same thing, well for now I satisfied with the security of my hardware wallet which can also be your best option. Thieves will do everything to get free money from those people who don't know how to secure their wallet, its good that you are looking for more ways to be secured we all have to do the same and don't  let those scammers to get money from us.

It's for long term holding. I want a way to hide my coins from prying eyes for many years without having to worry about it. A paper wallet is nice, but it's not a waterproof or fireproof solution. While there are some metal wallets that are resistant against water and fire, they're not small enough to be hidden from prying eyes. Tattoos are a great way to hide your crypto, but they're certainly painful.

I guess that each method has its own advantages/disadvantages. Recently, I came up with a discovery of an "invisible ink" that could only be seen with a UV light. This is similar to what most banknotes have as a security feature to prevent counterfeiting. If you could somehow make a small paper wallet that's fireproof, and waterproof with its contents invisible from the naked eye, then it would be impossible for anyone to find out about your crypto. Imagine storing thousands of dollars worth of BTC hidden from plain sight. Now that's true financial freedom.

Nonetheless, I'm glad to see many people posting great ideas to hide crypto from thieves. The most discreet and efficient way to achieve said purpose will be a "winner in my book". I'm considering distributing several copies of my Bitcoin wallet as a sort of backup against natural disasters. You can hide your crypto well from prying eyes, but if you lose it, then your efforts will be in vain. ;)

I always keep it not only in one wallet. All the tokens I have I always spread across several wallets. Even if my wallet is hacked in the end, I won't lose all the tokens I have because I didn't put them in one place. and I saved the backup in the email, I didn't forget to put it in the rar file that was given a password. This is useful if it's suastu when I lose my wallet data.

The most discreet way is to live a discreet life, that is, not everyone should know you are a Bitcoin investor, and even if you want to share knowledge of Bitcoin investing, then mind what you tell the person, that is, try as much as possible not to bring in your investment plans, how many Bitcoin you hold etc, into the discussion, this is the first step I believe, and secondly be careful of the people you bring into your home. Also, for private keys or mnemonic phrases, should not be in your phone or computer, it must be written down, or noted on paper and kept in a very secure and private place, hence the reason you have to be careful of people you invite into your home. And also, depending on how big your investment is, do well to store in different wallets; of course keeping on exchanges is out of the option and thus hardware wallets is the best way.

A thieve will only want to get your private keys if he or she knows you are fully into crypto, the best way to be safe here is not ranting about crypto and how much you have in them, this days thieves can be harmed to get anything out of you, so even if you store your private key somewhere safe you will be forced to give the location up unless you don't care about your life

You can get fireproof envelopes to put paper documents into. If these are put into safety deposit boxes inside banks they shouldn't (in theory) get water damage or fire damage.

Failing that a cunning deception where you put a corrupted thumb drive in a hidden location for the bad guys to find and spend weeks trying to recover, all the while the funds are in a brain wallet.

There are phishing sites that look perfectly the same as the myetherwallet's interface. Avoid clicking different links when you need to open your wallet, have it bookmarked and check the website properly before opening your wallet. This is how wallets usually get hacked. That is why having a hardware wallet is one of the essential parts of securing your finds in crypto.

Interesting. Never thought this was possible before. I will try it to see the results. Putting the fireproof envelope on a safe deposit box, should keep your crypto secure in the long run. The contents contained herein, should be obfuscated in order to avoid bringing suspicion. If somebody gets to read what's inside (which I doubt because of Banks' high level of security), they won't be able to decipher it that easily. A brain wallet may be all you need to secure your crypto as much as possible.

Nonetheless, discretion is key to prevent the theft of your hard-earned crypto money. You could become a target of thieves and/or hackers if they suspect you're involved in crypto. Staying "low" should keep your crypto safe for a very long time. There are many methods to hide your crypto, limited to your own imagination. I'd simply store a crypto seed in a very small piece of paper, and hide it in a discreet location to avoid suspicion. Making the paper wallet fire and waterproof will make things better for the long-term "hodler" like myself. :D

Do you mean more of your seed or your wallet?  Example if you have a hardware wallet like ledger or trezor.  I mean wouldn't most people nowaday probably heard of know what it is that though?

What do people expect when they ask questions like this? Find or learn a universal remedy for all kinds of hacker attacks and fraud? It does not exist, there are only working methods for storing cryptocurrency, and they have been known for a long time. Along with the growth of the cryptocurrency market, new fraud schemes appear. You need to be very careful with email and other notifications.

Or just don't tell anyone that you're trading crypto.
I am somehow a bit paranoid sometimes and I tend to think that people are hating me and tailing me on what I do with the intention of either robbing me or worse.
I just don't tell someone around the internet that I am earning through crypto.
In cases that I need name for some community, I use a pseudonymous names.

write offline our recovery seeds or private keys from any wallet my friend
and do not tell or show your recovery seeds or private key to anyone even to your best friend or others, except you 100% believe with the guy
but, the best way is by buying a hardware wallet to keep our crypto safe

What do you think, it is wise to show in public like social media, telling to others etc that you are doing cryptocurrency? I know some people that they are advertising crypto through social medias and they are posting market trends, crypto news and articles and many more about crypto. Actually I don't get the idea of posting it publicly but a lot of people are doing it that is why I got curious.

Never store them, online. No matter how easy it is for you to access, never store your coins online.
Again, mind your mouth. Mind who you tell about the crypto coins you have in your possession, whether online or offline. Many people have lost their coins because of how their mouths and yet leaving traces of where they store it.

Just don't talk about it even on social media. This is the reason some of us got robbed already and target for being a BTC holder.
There will be crimes in the future where a crypto holder because he braggs about his holdings on facebook, his family could be a victim of kidnap for ransom. Desperate people with no money will everything to get their hands on every altcoin you hold even if it means learning how it works.  ;D

a suggestion like the one in action films. what you say can come true. frequent updating of information on social media regarding asset ownership could trigger it all.
but in some cases, a hack can also occur. be careful what you store on your phone and computer. Emails and instant messages on social media are also particularly vulnerable. stay careful.

That's the golden rule of securing crypto against hacks or theft. Always create your seed or public + private keys in offline mode. This way you can ensure your crypto funds are out of reach from malicious actors in cyberspace. Now, the real deal would be securing your crypto physically against thieves. You'd need to be as discreet as possible in order to avoid bringing unwanted attention. Storing your crypto in a very small piece of paper, or a microSD card while hiding it somewhere discreet will keep you safe for years on end.

Nonetheless, I think I've found the solution to my problem. Been doing some digging and came up with an idea. I'd simply write the seed on a very small piece of paper using UV ink (aka as invisible ink). Then, I'd dip the paper on a liquid that aims to make it fireproof (you can find how to do it on YouTube). Finally, I'd soak the paper in wax to make it waterproof. This way, no one will be able to find out about my crypto holdings while the paper wallet remains safe against the elements of nature. Pretty smart, eh? ::)

I think the most ideal approach to stow away your own crypto from hackers is by covering your digital footprint and not diversifying how you store coins in your portfolio to others so they will not form any interest in taking from you. If at any point they realize that you have a huge load of crypto it would be better for you to put it up into a hard wallet like a record and make a parcel into your hodlings by putting it on numerous wallets
