Title: server motherboards for mining rigs
Post by: aliitp2 on February 03, 2021, 05:36:19 AM
Hello,

I have two server setups (Boards, CPUs, ECC RAM etc...) which am thinking to hook up some GPUs to and start mining,

the boards I have ATM are:-

X9DRi-F: https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X9DRi-F.cfm
X9DR7-LN4F: https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/xeon/c600/x9dr7-ln4f.cfm

of course they come with their CPUs, and compatible RAM

Will those boards be suitable for mining ? and how many GPUs can i hook up to each one ?

Finally, will a Desktop PSU hook up just fine to those ?...

thanks,

Yes they should if the motherboard has pcie x16 slot and also pcie x16 slot you can use riser too, I'm running my GPUs on a core2duo motherboard lol and it's working perfectly with 4 graphic cards, hashrates are accurate too and power draw is normal

looks compatible with regular psu it has 24pin and 2 8pins for cpu.you need get good psu for this 2 xeon will draw alot power if you plan mining on cpus too. it says you have to use 2 cpus to enable all pcie slots.

That's definitely a server motherboard :o, my advice is don't bother using the CPUS for mining because of energy they consumes unless you have free electricity, also it will be better if you use riser cables inside those pcie slots, they are too closer to each other for even three graphic cards, watch out for Temp

It's second gen Xeon motherboard, it's good for mining, any motherboard that has pcie slots can be used for mining and the major reason why some people prefer old motherboard is to cut down the cost of investment, go for it and buy some risers too, you will need big power supply like 1200 watts and also 6x gpus should work on the motherboard

You should be fine, update the bios to the lastest if all the PCIe slits don't work and make sure you use risers to power the graphic cards to get better cooling temperature, drop your feed back when you set things up and running

thanks a lot EVERYONE for the encouraging start :D

- yes i have 2x Xeons AMOF i have all components since those were my production servers for years but now am into mining, also they have 192 GB RAM, mmmm, can those RAM be utilized for mining somehow ???

- dont worry boys i probably wont use the CPUs for mining...

- ya bios akready udadated to pretty much latest as ive been using them for few years,,,

will keep u posted, but first we need to get some decent damn Graphics Cards to start mining, Geeeeez....

Ram does not effect for gpu mining but in cpu mining it does, not amount of ram you need, speed of ram makes difference in cpu mining

Hello Forums,

after long day setting this up (over 12 Hours) I was finally able to build, test and run my First Mining Rig using Server Motherboard,

Thanks for EVERYONES help setting this up i thought it would be tough but it went relatively fine !...

I have created a youtube video for you guys to watch, so let me know what do you think :)

enjoy,

Congratulations, i just read your thread today and found out u already finished it up.
I have question, Is the mining activity disturb ur hosting function?

Mining is not a disturb hosting function.
You need to install more than 4 GB of RAM and use a 4-core processor.
A good internet connection and SSD hard drive will complement your farm, and you can use it as a file storage, hosting service, mail server and similar tasks.
