Title: Becareful when mining coins
Post by: FireBallex on February 06, 2021, 08:36:07 AM
I don't if I should say be careful with minerstat or be cautious with your PC, my windows security detected a trojan called Wacatac.D5!ml and after some research I find out that this trojan is capable to using your PC to mine behind your back, and also find out it's coming from Minerstat installer, I don't know how this trojan gets in my PC because I've never used browser on the PC at all, it's a hashrate stealing trojan

Agree fully.  Be careful with what you download.
A couple weeks ago I downloaded  OverdriveNTool version 0.2.9 for my RX 5700, only to find out it is riddled with virus.
After 1 day I could no longer remote connect to that rig and had to go onsite to reboot it.
Ended up having to reinstall the OS.

Somehow the trojan find its way into your PC, that's not Minerstat software fault I believe, windows security shows Minerstat as the infected software not the real culprit, anyways you gotta be careful and make sure you have security softwares updated to fish out any threat

Some prefers windows for other reasons, mining OS is a complete mining OS only, you can't do other things on the OS than to mine but with windows you can do lots of things, standalone mining OS is good for those who don't care about other things but mining only

You will be fine if you have good antivirus on your PC, some miners setup can be detected as virus so just go into the antivirus settings and allow them, to avoid all this trouble just run a Linux OS miners or mining OS and kiss virus and trojans goodbye

well with hiveOS and an nvidia card u can do quite a lot for a mining OS
with a lil tweaking u could build up some extra creature comforts
there is another option tho
look into GPU pass through or iommu groups
u could run windows and pass ur mining gpus to a miningOS in a virtual machine or the other way around

Well ideally mining rigs should only mine.

But real world many want windows 10.

I have lots of rigs most are smos.

But I do mine on a few win 10 builds.

There are some who thought that hiveOS and other Linux OS builds are going to be like the real Linux so they avoid them at all cost, that was how I always view mining OS before until i end up giving it a try and it is lovable, far more stable than windows but of course we can't do without windows OS

What you say is a good warning in a general sense but did you reach out to minerstat before posting about it here? I used both the Linux and Windows one on different setups and have not experienced what you say. I literally checked the system again right now after reading this. Perhaps you need to figure out where did it arrive from.

Also, it would be nice if you can write more about it with some references and also a solution for people having similar issue.

I second this comment. It might not be as simple for everyone what seems obviously simple to us. A while ago, a friend had wanted to mine on his gaming pc.. no way such a person will install Linux to mine while sacrificing all the other things.

Some people buy a fully built rig thinking that it is an auto money-making machine. I met a guy who didn't know how to run a rig with windows installed forget about Linux. The problem is not nominal operation by clicking and mining coins in your wallet but troubleshooting of both software and hardware when something goes wrong.

There is no reason to contact Minerstat team, I'm using Minerstat on my PC and I have never seen any virus or trojan through Minerstat software, OP don't understand that the trojan just affected Minerstat miner first that's why the antivirus detected it as a trojan, this isn't Minerstat software fault
