A small update.

In terms of publicity they did really well LOL

In the bright side, locking the account was the right thing to do. In case it was not the real Elon Musk? At least now there are no doubt left.

I don't want to turn the topic into discussing the their service but I have to point something out. They might be good service but not warning their customers that the their funds most likely will get locked until profound investigation is done, is dragging them down below in matter of trust.

As I said, it was the lol of the day.

Elon may be trolling them and may not even have any accounts with this company. It is hard to believe someone who claims to believe in bitcoin for such a long time is using some poorly created web wallet for his billion dollar worth of bitcoins!

The people that would know how bad their service model and how they lock out this accounts will know how to sift through the mud of other user that will discuss the service of FreeWallet. Elon definitely did a beating to their publicity though, with people that are a fanatic of Elon Musk, I think that FreeWallet will suffer big time.

Just because he (supposedly) has Freewallet account doesn't mean that he used them for storing billion dollar worth of bitcoin. Since they have tendencies of confiscating people's funds, I have no doubt that they would exit scam already is someone is crazy enough to use them for storing such a huge amount of BTC. Then again, Musk even if he has account there, he should listen to his own advice and avoid them at all cost.

I do agree that it is hard to believe that anyone would use Freewallet when you see how they treat their users, but for some reason people still do, unfortunately.

If Elon fell for the FreeWallet scam who knows  who else scammed him before.  ;D Maybe forum's experienced scammers should target Elon instead. Looks like an easy target to me. I wonder what would he do if his old elecrtrum wallet asks him to update. Huh.

Elon Musk made a mistake using this FreeWallet but in the process he is educating millions of his followers not to use wallets that you don't hold your private keys and something that can lock you at anytime.
People learn best from their own mistakes including Musk, and what is funny now is that everyone is making him suggestions and shilling their own wallets with paid twitter armies, like for example Binance recommending Trustwallet or Safepal hardware wallet giving him and EVERY Tesla employee for free ::)
I think that Elon now needs to learn importance of Open Source wallets, and for Bitcoin that would be Blue wallet app or Electrum.

I personally really like the performance of Atomic, until now I have experienced no problems or locks, maybe I can recommend the Atomic wallet to Elon Musk. 'lol'

This is indeed a good opportunity for other wallet developers and they are competing to comment on promoting their wallets.
Safepal as you said is a new, feature-packed wallet which is fully supported by Binance and is currently successful and trending.

This incident should act as an eye opener to all whoever holds their coins to online account providers like coinbase or freewallet etc. I see they have unlocked Elon's account just after a tweet but imagine if it was any XYZ person! Probably it would have taken him a lifetime to unlock the account.

Cryptocurrency was introduced to remove the middleman from any financial transaction. Online wallets are the middlemen here which must be removed at all costs! Not your keys, not your crypto!

Yes, this is the right time to open up an explosion of dissatisfaction from all users, this moment should be a topic for every user to cash out their balance on FreeWallet immediately. and provide lessons for all the actions of those who arbitrarily lock their accounts.

I mean, the first thing you do when you want to purchase or read more about DogeCoin is you most likely google it.. and their website (https://dogecoin.com/) doesn't seem to mention FreeWallet. If Musk didn't troll, then this seems like a kinda stupid move coming from him, lol.

But, there is no doubt that if an ordinary user would have had such a problem instead of Elon Musk, you would not have paid any attention to their words. If they had contacted via Support, you would have confiscated their funds on the pretext of TOS. In the case of Coinbase & you, there are many instances where people have lost their funds.

Everyone should learn from this tweet of Elon Musk, get rid of custodial wallet and make it a habit to use the non-custodial wallet.

How come he didn’t know about private keys? But anyway Freewallet is humiliated by this lol, there are pretty good Bitcoin wallet I wonder how he landed on Freewallet with a low rating and not so good in terms of feedback. Maybe its the first BTC of Elon got locked up.

Even if he used this wallet, it doesn't means that he keep his billions worth crypto there. He doesn't looks stupid enough to do it.

Every tweet Elon Musk makes will have an impact in the market and FreeWallet will try their best to sort the issues rather than challenging him as it will kill their business altogether and inadvertently it is the best publicity for every investor to hold the coins where you have control over your private key.

Every company knows the advertising power he has in his words and if he endorses their wallets they make millions of dollars :D.
I am certain Elon is well aware of open source wallets.

FreeWallet are a joke of a service, they’ve been selectively scamming people for years. I think I was one of the first to neg their account on here years ago. I don’t know how they’re still trading, I would have expected them to be shit down by law enforcement by now.

He was probably annoyed they were trying to promote their service using his name and wanted to embarrass them. FreeWallet doesn't have the best reputation so it is really good of him to promote using non-custodial wallets.

You are right not to trust them and any other service that doesn't provide you with the private keys.

This is worst than exchanges. At least in the exchanges you are depositing to trade, not to store coins!

Wait, so Elon using FreeWallet to store his coins, or he only give the wallet a try?
I think Elon doing some research first before using that wallet, and since a lot scam accusation agains it, he decide to give it a try.
Whatever reason, hope Elon got his coins back and not store a lot of money on that wallet.

He was on a hunt for a wallet app I guess to store the doge coins he bought for his kid (https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1359519541219500033) but how he end up testing the FreeWallet i have no idea. I think they mentioned him in a tweet and then all that happend.
I'm sure he has experts on how to store 1B+ worth of crypo so this and they have quite nice secured vault of it. This was just for 'fun'.

Got curious so I checked. For so much shady stuff they've done, I'm utterly shocked how decent or far-better-than-expected their Google Play and Apple App Store ratings are. They probably deserve mostly 1.5-2 out of 5.

some time ago there were rumors if twitter from elon musk attacked hackers. It's possible that Freewallet is currently protecting elon musk's assets from such hackers because I'm sure that Elon Musk can't possibly take away the assets he's investing in.

The fact that Elon tweeted about Freewallet doesn't necessarily mean he must be having an account there. Although, he might it doesn't mean he would be storing his coins there.
Elon is a pretty smart guy and he would definitely know that "Not your keys, not your coins". May be just tweeted this so that he makes people aware of using only non-custodial wallets.
Freewallet just got some free publicity though  ;D Good for them if they are improving their services now onwards.
Anybody wise enough wouldn't use custodial wallets to store large amount of coins obviously.

I smell something fishy going on for sure. Elon won't use freewallet, unless it's for fun and to try them out. And he won't even ask them to unlock his account if he got it locked. He'd just move on.

First my reaction was the same that something is false in this story, but after I checked their accounts and read their comments to each other I was laughing. LOL it is really funny. 😂😂 But some thought came to my mind - may be Ilon was trolling them, but imagine how many people have checked already, and will check the Twitter account of Freewallet, information about this wallet in case someone did not know about it, and in some strange way they became more popular in a day after Ilon's comments. May be it was such a veiled publicity stunt?))) 😁😁

I don't know about this, but Elon said himself to freewallet "Please unlock my account". So yeah he has account on there and storing 'some' of coins in there.

That's true but I was mostly talking about him believing in the technology, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the billions of dollars part.
You see Elon Musk is not the average Joe that entered bitcoin hoping to make money, he doesn't need money since he is one of the richest men alive. He also has shown interest in the technology and what bitcoin offers not just the monetary value. That is why it is hard to believe someone like him using such a terrible wallet service.
