Title: Great miners in the house, your help is needed!
Post by: Gorosden on February 22, 2021, 07:25:14 PM
Something crazy is going on with my rig, I just find out that my rig is consuming up to 600 watts power, WTF? Is my motherboard faulty or what?  Help!! Here is my configuration

1. CPU 2nd gen i5 non overclock and not using for mining
2. One RX580 undervolt and miner shows 80watts power consumption
3. Two Gtx1660 super at 31mh each, no overclock, @ 81 watts each

That is freaking all, even if my motherboard is eating up to 150 watts what is eating that high watt? OMG 😱😱😱

1st .. how did you found out you rig consuming 600W of power ? :)

2nd .. Miner programs probably not measuring the power what your VGA card using , its probably measuring how much power the GPU using on your VGA card

3rd .. if You undervolt your RX 580 , what did you undervolt on the card ? GPU ? Memory ? changed Power Limit ?

rx 580 consume around 140-150, and gtx 1660 should around 110-120,, all component with riser should easy go 100w, total around 500w if youre using gold/platinum psu

so 600w there will be some gpu dont apply the config...

advice use wattmeter instead rather than depend on software measurement...

I want to ask this question from you people, so if I underclock my gpu to 80watts it's really still not 80 watts that the miner is showing me on it's dashboard? I thought this way I'm drawing lesser power? Then what's the talk of reducing power draw on mining rigs all about? It seems they don't work

So risers are consuming some powers too? 🤔🤔🤔 Damn I really need to get my hands on wattmeter ASAP, at least I would know the exact amount of power I'm using, all these guess doesn't count, anyways, OP you can close few cores in your BIOS settings, i5 cpu isn't needed for mining

Run your OS from a pendrive and not HDD to cut down power consumption, also get rid of that core i5, it consumes up to 75watt at idle and God knows how much it will draw at 6 to 10% load, motherboard consumes up to 40watt on its own, I guess your calculation is correct, my advice is get a wattmeter to fully understand what you are doing

AMD cards use more watts than reported. Check GPUZ. You have to add a couple of reading for total wattage. It is not using 80 watts. Plus you lose some efficiency with the PSU. What is the capacity of the PSU? It will be more efficient if you are not maxing out the PSU. Also helps if the PSU is efficient - gold or platinum rated.

Dashboard only shows GPU power consumption.
You also need to take into account the consumption of RAM and cooling system. The efficiency of the power supply also influences the consumption from the wall.
2nd gen i5 CPUs consume more power than modern CPUs.
To talk about energy consumption from the wall, you need to buy a multimeter and measure the electricity consumption

If high electricity consumption is what you are trying to avoid you shouldn't have go ahead with a 2nd gen core i5, they are old and they consume much electricity, this is why new CPUs are good for mining rigs, also grab yourself a watt meter on amazon or store nearby so you can actually know how much your whole PC is consuming
