Title: How to retrieve bitcoin of an old HW.1 wallet
Post by: geoffrey hunter on February 25, 2021, 12:46:50 PM
Hi
I have an old HW.1 Wallet that has some Bitcoin on. I am getting no help from HardwareWallet as to how to access the Bitcoin - their site just says its a "Discontinued Product".
Do I have to purchase a new Nano S?
Please can someone point me in the direction of post that might help?
Thanks
Geoff

If you are talking about ledger HW.1, I would not suggest using that anymore and if you have seed words you can import them in any other cold wallet or hardware wallet.
For connecting HW.1 you can use Electrum wallet downloaded only from official page.
If latest version is not working, I think you can try with older version 3.3.8.

Code:
https://download.electrum.org/3.3.8/electrum-3.3.8.exe

I'm surprised Ledger just lists Discontinued products (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360010500620-Discontinued-products) without any links on how to recover the funds.
I'm following this topic to add the solution to my overview of old storage formats (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4959742.0).

Note: after recovering your Bitcoins from an old wallet, you may want check for Forkcoins (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2836875.msg56016704#msg56016704) on your addresses.

I have tried to use Electrum and it can find my Ledger HW.1 but says it needs a Firmware update from Ledger - but there is nothing on Ledger site offering firmware updates - only app for their current products. Also on my Windows 10 machine I can't see the USB drive in the file manager to make a back up - what I i missing?
Thanks to trying to help
Geoff

I have tried 3.3.8 and it come up with "Cannot load wallet:This version of Electrum, is too old to open this wallet. (highest supported storage version: 17, version for this file is 33)"
Any suggestions?

It's a hardware wallet, you can't make a backup from your PC.

Your backup is the 24 words on your recovery sheet... that should be all that you require to be able to restore your wallet should the HW.1 fail. If you do not have those 24 words, you do not have a backup!
