Title: EVGA Supernova 1600 G2 Powering 2 GPUS and their risers from a single GPU slot Post by: bishkot on March 18, 2021, 02:36:46 PM Hi folks,
I am wondering if it would be possible and safe enough to power 2 X RX580 Nitro+ 8GB cards and their risers form 1 GPU slot of the PSU. This is the GPU https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=120-G2-1600-X1 and as everyone knows the RX 580 Nitro+ https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/consumer/nitro-rx-580-8g-g5 Currently, i am powering every GPU and its riser with 1 GPU slot from the PSU - 1 cable that splits and powers the 8 pin connector of the GPU and the riser with 6 pin I was reading here and there that it should be ok if the power is not exceeding 225 W . On Phoenix miner it shows that every GPU draws between 90 and 105W (GPUs are bios modded undervolted etc...) So 2 RX580 Nitro+ 8GB will need 210W max. Another question is Phoenix miner showing the consumption of the GPU and the riser in total? Or is this only the GPU? As far as i know the risers can draw up to 75W power Thanks Title: Re: EVGA Supernova 1600 G2 Powering 2 GPUS and their risers from a single GPU slot Post by: sxemini on March 18, 2021, 02:44:37 PM Hi folks, I am wondering if it would be possible and safe enough to power 2 X RX580 Nitro+ 8GB cards and their risers form 1 GPU slot of the PSU. You think the psu manufacturer give you the chance to burn the psu? 1 Cable with 2x 8 pin can handle over 300w. And all miner show wattage reading from software, this is not the real power consumption. If you want the real consumption, you must measure it at the wall. Those card can pull 200 watts. So if the settings drop you could melt the cable. This happens on windows more than linux. But it can happen on linux. So the best answer is maybe it is safe. Do you feel lucky? Title: Re: EVGA Supernova 1600 G2 Powering 2 GPUS and their risers from a single GPU slot Post by: bishkot on March 18, 2021, 02:59:47 PM I want to power 2 GPUs form 1 GPU slot.
My question is will that be safe for the PSU. Can i burn the GPU slot of the PSU if i power 2 GPUs and their risers. I have 10 X Rx580 the miner shows avg. 92-100 W. The total system consumes about 1250W at the wall so it must be about the real consumption of the GPUs that is show with PhoenixMiner. As i understand from your reply one GPU slot of the PSU can handle up to 300W . This is enough for 2X RX580. So i just need to make sure that the cable is good and i can power 2 GPUS from one slot of the PSU? Get a second mobo and lower the cards to 8 on the first one. My reasoning is a 1600 watt g2 is costly. A smaller mobo to reduce load on the beast is smart. Cheaper mobos using a usb stick and running smos are a better solution than what you are doing. what does the evga 1600 watt g2 cost? a lot well over 350 usd a seasonic 850 watt focus is only 150 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seasonic-focus-gx-850-850w-80-gold-psu-full-modular-fan-control-in-fanless-silent-cooling-mode-10-yr-warranty-black/6414265.p?skuId=6414265 a mobo and a cpu a usb is pretty cheap. pulling 2 cards from the first rig and looking for a deal on a new card is a better plan. you end up with a 8 card and a 3 card setup and the 3 card can grow a bit more. As the EVGA 1600 G2 has 9 GPU sots i am thinking to take only 1 GPU out and stay with 1 Evga 1600 g2 that will power the 9 cards and use the other EVGA with another MB + another cards Thanks for the advise Title: Re: EVGA Supernova 1600 G2 Powering 2 GPUS and their risers from a single GPU slot Post by: philipma1957 on March 18, 2021, 09:33:10 PM Thanks philipma1957, As the EVGA 1600 G2 has 9 GPU sots i am thinking to take only 1 GPU out and stay with 1 Evga 1600 g2 that will power the 9 cards and use the other EVGA with another MB + another cards Thanks for the advise the psu will like that lessor load. Even if your PL settings reset somehow and they will be pulling 300W each for a while EVGA cables won't melt (been there, done that, overlooked my 1080ti's reset and they ran like this for half a day). BUT. If you run 9 cards and this happens you might fry your PSU. I say might because I'm not sure if G2 PSU has internal overload protection (it should, but I don't know for sure). If it doesn't you WILL fry your PSU are it might end up with fire.

This is the best way to reduce your worries mate. I am mining with 8 cards, the 6 are in one mobo asrock h11 btc pro, and the other two are on a cheap mobo with affordable psu that i bought earlier. This time around we should be practical, it's good to have someone give you ideas and I personally agrees with this one. He thing is if your are upgrading and planning to add more, then you should probably disregard this, I did this because I need to get first my ROI and wait for another year, maybe after that I am planning to add more. |
