Title: How do I prevent damaging my PC while using it to mine for several hours Post by: 6erth6rind6ain on March 28, 2021, 05:54:58 PM If I want to have my gaming PC mine ETH all night while I'm sleeping, but I don't want to accidentally damage my GPU, am I correct to assume that if I use MSI afterburner to turn down the power limit from 100% to 70% that I'll avoid damaging my GPU while mining for several hours at a time? If the answer is yes, how do I do the same thing for my CPU? If the GPU reaches that temperature, the miner will shutdown. e.g. in PhoenixMiner you can specify the -tstop command-line option in the configuration file or when starting the miner.
Code: -tstop <n> Ideally you want to keep your GPU from going >70C for extended periods. Good ways to lower the temperature are reducing the power limit and increasing the air flow so you are removing the heat from around the cards. With only one card, heat build up is not generally an issue. The GPU fans should be enough to keep the temperature down. You may also want to open the case at night to see if that helps. If you want to mine ETH with a CPU, it's not worth it and you will spend more in power that you can generate in ETH. You can look in to mining CPU friendly coins like Monero to see if it's worth it. Worst case is usually your fans run faster so they wear out quicker and have a shorter lifespan.
My advice is just make sure you got good air flow, make sure you have a good intake and exhaust fan or better yet just remove the cover from your desktop case. It will drop temperatures a lot but it will make more noise which might be annoying if you sleep in the room. But you most likely won’t damage your GPU by mining. There are temp sensors and they shutdown to prevent damage. My GPU is an RTX 24gb 3090 My CPU is an i9-10850k the cpu wont use much power. the gpu needs lower ram settings. not sure since my 3090 run with linux. try using 60% for power. buy your self a kwatt meter and let us know what you get at the wall. kill-a-watt meters are like 20-25 on amazon or ebay. That way the cpu will not use much power. It is not a big earner anyway. The money is in that gpu.
