Title: Can one change his email address if he no longer has access to it?
Post by: Zilon on April 26, 2021, 05:47:55 AM
I have sought for where I wrote down the password of account but for a while now I can't find it. What if I have misplaced it completely and end up not seeing it is there anyway I can change my email address to avoid missing my account in the future?

This has given me lots of concern for days I have been wondering what would happen if I misplace my device and forget my login details on this platform or I wish to change my password in the future to safeguard my account from hackers without having access to my email address it would mean the account is fully gone.

I wish to get a solution if any exist on how to get a new mail in case in can't find my password.

Are you able to sign a message from a bitcoin address you have posted previously? If so, you should follow the instructions in the thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5089777.0) about recovering hacked or lost accounts.

You should make note that you have access to a session cookie, and that you don't want to get logged out while waiting for your email to be reset.

If you have the password, you can change everything.
If you have email, you can still access the account.
If you have neither password, nor email access, you can't access the account unless you have a staked BTC address. If you have it, you can recover your account and access it.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, OP, you lost control of your e-mail account and want to know if you can change your e-mail address on bitcointalk--and as far as I'm aware the answer is yes.  You can write in any e-mail address into that field on the forum, even if it's not yours because bitcointalk doesn't send out a confirmation link as far as I know.

I haven't changed my e-mail address in quite some time, so this could have been updated....but in any case you can try to change your forum e-mail address and see what happens, OP.  I'm pretty sure that's not going to lead to the loss of your account or anything.

It's possible to change the email address, but you could have problem recovering your account in the future in case hackers steal it. Usually what the accounts' recovery team looks at when attempting a recovery of the account is if you can write to them using the original email with which the account was registered to. If you fail to do so, It becomes harder to recover it.

If I were you I would try as much as possible to regain access to the original email address of the account before thinking of changing to a new email address.

You can reset your password by login your account and change the password.

Other ways
- Reset it via email
- Fill in the recovery request and wait.

Do you sign a bitcoin message? Bitcoin message can help you recover your account.

I have changed my email a long time ago, if I am correct then it didn't require email verification from the old email (I would be wrong since I did it a long time ago). You can attempt and check if it's working or not. The real concern is if your account being hacked. Then it will require access to your old email. So it would better to recover your email as well. If you don't have any other way except change email then you may take the below step.

Create a post somewhere (probably reputation board) with a signed message from your old Bitcoin address and write about your change email. Mention both email old and new and just lock the thread without edit. The edited thread will not consider for any recovery process. It will serve in the future that email has changed by the real owner. I can't assure you that the admin will accept or not during account recovery in the event of hacking. But at least you have something to show that you are the real owner.

It means if you log out, you will not be able to log in again. If you log out by mistake, you will not be able to log in again. You have a problem proving the ownership of the account, which is either by accessing the old email or a private key for one of your previous addresses.
Update the password >> change the e-mail.

If you want to change your email address associated with your account, you need to enter your password. The OP stated that he has misplaced the paper that has his password.

Yes, you can but your explanation is somehow confusing, do you lost your email password or the forum? If it the forum password you lost there's no need for you to change your email address.

The only existing solution is to write a signed message using a Bitcoin address you have once used on the forum but since you participate in the bounty which I am not sure you have for once participate in a signature campaign.
I will advise you to stake the Bitcoin address you may use in the future here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0).

Changing profile data including email requires a password. Resetting the password requires current email access.

If you currently lose data access to both, you won't be able to do anything. The only alternative, submit an email change to the account recovery team where you previously had to stake your bitcoin address. And to avoid our doubts whether this account is still controlled by the original owner, use a bitcoin address that you have ever posted on this forum, not a new address. e.g

He doesn't need to contact the recovery team just for an email change! If the old email is lost, it's obvious that you need to change it if you ever want to have access to recover you password via email. Just make sure you don't lose the password and you won't need anyone unless the account actually gets lost/locked/hacked.

I advice you change your password now that you still have your phone. When you click login, your username appeared, don't auto login. Then go beneath and click forgot password. Automatically you will be asked to fill your user email and they will send you an email on how to reset your password. Once that is done documents it for future reference.

This has given me lots of concern for days I have been wondering what would happen if I misplace my device and forget my login details on this platform or I wish to change my password in the future to safeguard my account from hackers without having access to my email address it would mean the account is fully gone.

Now that you still have your device with you advice you reset your password or email. Follow this step please;
Step1: automatically login and click on your profile, then your profile will display your user email, nice you see your email write it down.

Step2: Then click logout

Step3: click login, this time do it manually by filling your user name.
Step4: in the place of your password leave it blank and go beneath to click forgot password. And then click login.
Step5: You will be asked to put your user email so that the forum can send you email to reset your password.
Step6: go the message sent to your email and follow the directive to reset your password.

This is a nice question that can be resolve if the device used in signing the account is still intact. But if the device is misplaced I think you have to contact admin or moderator on how to recover your account.

I advice now that your device is still intact you should go through process of login and get you email from your profile and use forgot password method to recover your reset your password. And after which write your information gotten.

This is a nice question that can be resolve if the device used in signing the account is still intact.

Resetting your email address has nothing to do with your device used in signing in. You only need your password which is required when changing any profile related features and possibly a signed message confirming the change; Remember the email log in details is what is lost, not the bitcointalk account.

Step5: You will be asked to put your user email so that the forum can send you email to reset your password.
Step6: go the message sent to your email and follow the directive to reset your password.
If the email is not accessible, how would the recovery message be read?

It will take you some long way to recover your account if your device is misplaced.
The best advice to give is to recover your login details and documents before device gets misplaced

To recover your account login details is very before you're out if sight by you device. If you don't have access to your email it may not be possible to recover. For this I advice every user to always make use of their sim and always remember to write down the password to their email for easy recovery when something happen to your device you can easily login to other device.
