Title: How to add a segwit address to blockchain.com?
Post by: Sanka555 on May 06, 2021, 08:02:12 AM
I have a segwit address "bc1 ...... blablabla"
and the private key from it.
derived from bitcoin Core

I am trying to add this private key on blockchain.com to get this address in my wallet on this site.
instead, it adds a NOT segwit address to me.
how to get the correct one?

Blockchain.info doesn't support native segwit addresses. If you want to spend the funds from that address, you'll have to use another wallet. I suggest going with Electrum. Here's a step by step guide on how to sweep your funds: https://bitcoinelectrum.com/sweeping-your-private-keys-into-electrum/

[GUIDE] How to Safely Download and Verify Electrum [Guide] (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5240594.msg54223763#msg54223763)

There are two ways you can achieve your aim, but it depends on the one you prefer.

The first has been suggested already above. You can sweep the private key into a newly generated electrum wallet which is segwit by default with the latest version (version 4.1.2).

Note that:
  • transaction fee will be required during sweeping
  • the private key of the coin sweeped is not included among the private key of the electrum wallet, the coin will be sweeped into an address on the electrum wallet which will be stored on blockchain

I will also suggest sweeping because hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet will be generated in which the coin is transfered to one of the addresses on the HD wallet.

The second is about importing the private key directly into electrum wallet, this can be the best option if you have many private keys you want to import because no fee is required, but no HD wallet is generated, only the wallet releted to the private keys imported will be generated, which means is it not HD wallet but only the addresses of the private key imported that will be generated. After successful importation, the wallet will synchronize with the blockchain and show you your bitcoin balance.

Importing your private keys into Electrum (https://bitcoinelectrum.com/importing-your-private-keys-into-electrum/#:~:text=Just%20select%20%E2%80%9CImport%20bitcoin%20addresses,Wallet%20Import%20Format%20(WIF).)

It's important to note that Blockchain.com is a web wallet and is not the best way to access your bitcoin address as there is a risk of accidentally landing on a phishing site and losing your funds. As recommended by OmegaStarScream and Charles-Tim, the Electrum wallet is a much safer solution.

However, if you still want to use a web wallet, you can try Bitamp Wallet. Bitamp is an easy-to-use, client-side, open-source Bitcoin wallet that also supports native SegWit addresses.
