Title: Broken S17+ PSU
Post by: freak1 on May 20, 2021, 05:29:25 AM
Hi my S17+ PSU is broken, First it was making the breaker go, now its just dosent do anytning on 1 plug, the other is still making the 1 fan spinning.

Getting a replacement seems impossible as they are not in stock anywhere. Is they fixable by any Electronic mekaniks?

I have lots of AWP 3+ PSU is there anyway to use 2 of those in parallel for the S17+

Two APW3+ can't pull enough power and current for an S17+ because it has an APW9+ PSU which outputs 3600W and 170A on one out, the other out has specs that also don't match the APW3+ either. I don't even think you can connect two of them in tandem.

Perhaps you can send it to zeusbtc or any other service listed on this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5297994.0). It lists some repair places in the US and EU.

NO! Unless a PSU is specifically made for what is called n+1 (paralleled) current sharing operation and correctly wired to use that mode NEVER EVER connect 2 or more PSU's in parallel. One will always have a slightly higher or lower voltage output than another and they will fight each other trying to regulate the voltage and supply power to a load. Great way to fry circuits...

Another concern is how the miner is regulating voltage to the chips: As I recall the S17 does not use on-board Vcore regulators -- like most if not all recent miners it adjusts the PSU output to directly feed the chip strings whatever voltage they are set by autotune to use. That means the controller has to be able to talk with the PSU.

Ignoring the breaker issue and assuming the breaker trips because it was too small for the current needed, based on my own experience, it's very common for a single fan to stop the whole PSU from working, you have 2 fans next to each other and 1 fan which is on the other side, the one which is located alone should be working fine, the other two both need to be good to spin, so what you can do is use the plug from the single fan to test the other two fans, if all 3 fans are good you need to replace the PSU, otherwise, if one of the fans is bad you just replace the fan.
