Title: Restoring old dogecoin wallet from 2014
Post by: Zerotenine on May 24, 2021, 12:18:11 PM
Hi people!
I have recovery file from old dogecoin wallet.
I think,it is from 2013-2014 bet when I try to replace wallet.
dat file and  run wallet, I get error: "wallet.dat corrupt.salvage failed"
Is there some difference between old .dat file, and new .dat file , or my wallet file is really broken?

Wallet file can corrupt, that is why it is good to backup your private key. This time that we have seed phrase, it is better to use seed phrase wallet (HD wallet), you will be able to just backup words instead. I thought bitcoin core is the wallet using wallet.dat for file backup, but I do not know about doge, but if it is bitcoin or doge, the backup would have worked if not corrupt.

Did you by any chance contact whoever runs the wallets? There has to be someone who is still supporting those wallets and knows how to solve this issue. Maybe it's a simple fix that they have already encountered or an update that can solve it. So if anyone knows, they might. Hope you don't lose much if it isn't fixable.

Dogecoin code was built on C++ which is same to Bitcoin that's why they have similarity on wallet format during there early stage. And also this thread was a help thread for recovering old wallet, So suggesting the use of recovery seed  instead is not appropriate since we all know that recovery seed is a bit standard nowadays for all types of wallet.

It may be it is already corrupted or the service requires an update. I have had a doge wallet not updating in a new phone but clearly updating in an old phone that it was first stored. You can transfer app from old phone to new phone, it will direct you to update most likely instead of going through playstore . Again you can contact the provider wallet and they will solve your issue.

Honestly, I know about cryptocurrency on 2018 so basically I don't have much knowledge about dogecoin wallets especially that year youmentioned but I think you should tell us what wallet are you trying to open using the wallet.dat you have stored. If you can open the wallet.dat without replacing the wallet.dat (like electrum) to the wallet.dat that the wallet you use created when you installed the app.
