Title: When will the fees come down? Fees wallet dependend?
Post by: Testnick on May 25, 2021, 04:46:13 AM
Hi. I wanted to put send some BTC from electrum to kraken. Being charged 42 satoshi per block horrified me a little.
Is the fee dependend to which exchange/wallet it goes or is it entirely based on the challenged memepool? When would you say it settles a bit? https://imgur.com/a/IZCrNkj (https://imgur.com/a/IZCrNkj)

I've replied to your post to LoyceV's thread.
Just for additional info: If you don't know how to change the Fee slider into "mempool", just tap "Within x blocks" and it will switch from the three available sliders: ETA, mempool and static.

The average mempool size is quite low right now and you may be able to send a priority txn (1mb from tip) with <10sat/B fee rate.

For anyone interested in how you manually change your fees so to apply to the blockchain, continue here on page 18: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2848987.new#new

Is the fee dependend to which exchange/wallet it goes ~?
Easy answer: no.
Longer answer: SegWit addresses have a slightly lower fee, but it doesn't matter much when sending a transaction to the address.

The fee rate does not depend on the wallet/exchange you are sending Bitcoins too. It's mostly dependent on the size of your transaction and the state of the mempool (if you want it to be confirmed quickly)

You can use tools like https://mempool.space to observe  the mempool and also find out what the most suitable fee rate would be for you.
Ideally, the unconfirmed transactions in the mempool tend to drop on weekends (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5250569.msg54486150#msg54486150). This in turn leads to a drop in the fee rate required to confirm transaction in the next block.

Right now, 10 sats/byte isn't bad.

Weekend is usually the best time to make transactions because the fees are lower than usual. It's not a guarantee but you if you don't need to make transactions asap, maybe you can wait. Don't forget to use RBF if possible, so you're not stuck in case the mempool spikes.
