Title: Latest on Twitter ban in Nigeria
Post by: Charles-Tim on June 05, 2021, 08:35:42 AM
Although, this is not a surprise for me. The government that governs Nigeria in the past after the milliary rule (head of states) were People's Democratic Party (PDP) which goverrns Nigeria for 16 years with Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and Goodluck Jonathan that rules as president during the PDP reign as the president. There was freedom of speech, but what people were complaining about was corruption, but during the time of Goodluck Jonathan, people also complained of Boko Haram killings (Boko Haram is one of the deadliest terrorists in the world) but located specifically and precisely in the Northeast Nigeria and neighboring country like Niger

Because people thought there would be changes, that there will be no more corruption in Nigeria which the All Progressives Congress (APC) were using against PDP during the presidental campaign, people believe in Muhammadu Buhar which is also now the incumbent president of Nigeria. I am not sure of his recent second term reign but he was truly voted for during the first term thinking corruption will cease to exist in Nigeria, also that he will be able to end Boko Haram massacre.

Muhammadu Buhari was voted for and became the president of Nigeria in 2015. After he was voted for, people started to complain of bad economy and suffering, some celebrities did not hesitate to display their emotions about this on social media, not long when the Senate pass a bill of hate speeches, that any Nigerian that is guilty of hate speeches would be fined 5 million naira ($12,195), I do not know if the fine amount has been changed or not. Also during his time was the EndSARs peaceful protest that Nigerian CBN block the bank account of the people's receiving funds for it, because if that, Bitcoin was later used for the funding, some months after, the CBN ban cryptocurrencies. Now president Muhammadu Buhari take to Twitter about Biafra war that that happened in 6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970, Twitter remove the tweet and suspend the president Twitter account for 12 hours but the federal government has told all telecommunication companies to block Twitter so that Nigerian citizens will not be able to access Twitter.

Now, this morning I was unable to access Twitter, if not because I used VPN to access it.

To read about the Twitter ban
Tweeps prepare to use VPNs as FG suspends Twitter in Nigeria (https://punchng.com/tweeps-prepare-to-use-vpns-as-fg-suspends-twitter-in-nigeria/)
Twitter suspension: Rights must be protected, Canadian envoy tells FG (https://punchng.com/twitter-suspension-rights-must-be-protected-canadian-envoy-tells-fg/)
BREAKING: MTN, Airtel, Glo, others block access to Twitter in Nigeria (https://punchng.com/breaking-mtn-airtel-glo-others-block-access-to-twitter-in-nigeria/)

People are now complaining of corruption, Boko Haram massacre, bandits, Fulani's herdsmen killing, and bad economy. IPOB has been agitating before for Biafra nation, now Yoruba are agitating for Oduduwa nation. There are much more to say but let me end it here.

Twitter, other OTTs must now register with CAC, FG insists

The Federal Government on Wednesday said the microblogging platform, Twitter, must register as a business concern in Nigeria as part of conditions to be met before the suspension placed on its operation can be lifted.

Mohammed accused the microblogging and social media platform of suspicious activities in the country, adding that it pays no taxes to the Nigerian government despite the revenue it generates from Nigerians.

“That is not the best practice globally, and that is why we are insisting that for you to operate in Nigeria you must first be a Nigerian company and be licensed by the broadcasting commission.

UPDATED: Nigeria needs Twitter, says Lawan

The senate president of Nigeria, Ahmad Lawan has finally commented on how social media are important.

The Senate finally broke its silence on the Federal Government ban on Twitter microblogging platform on Friday when its President, Ahmad Lawan, said Nigeria needs the social media platform just as it needs the country.

He said the Senate was convinced that the Federal Government and Twitter would eventually resolve their difference. He said, “The Honorable Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has informed Nigerians that the government is talking with Twitter to resolve this matter.

“Our belief is that Nigeria needs Twitter just as much as Twitter needs Nigeria.

Twitter ban: Nigeria loses N24.72bn in 12 days

Nigeria has lost N24.72bn ($60.14m) in 10 days to the Twitter ban that took effect on June 5. According to NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool, Nigeria loses N102.9m ($250,600) every hour to the ban.

I hope we can see how the government make no research before suspending Twitter in the country, I hope the suspension will be lifted off soon.

Twitter suspension: Lawyer sues Lai Mohammed, Malami as courts resume

A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has sued the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and the Federal Government for suspending social media platform, Twitter.

In the originating motion marked FHC/L/CS/542/2021, Effiong is seeking nine reliefs including an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from further suspending, deactivating or banning the operation and accessibility of Twitter or any other social media service in Nigeria.

Effiong asked the court to declare as illegal the threat of criminal prosecution issued by Malami and Mohammed against Nigerians who ‘violate’ the suspension or ban of Twitter, despite the absence of any written law.

Effiong recalled that on June 1, 2021, the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who is a Twitter user, tweeted a series of tweets in a thread in response to the agitations in the South East on his verified Twitter account with the handle @MBuhari with millions of followers.

Twitter ban: ECOWAS court fixes June 22 for hearing

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States has fixed June 22 for a hearing in the suit challenging the Federal Government’s suspension of the operations of the microblogging platform, Twitter, in Nigeria.

Twitter ban: FG, Lai Mohammed sued over directive to broadcasters

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has filed a lawsuit asking the Federal High Court in Abuja “to stop the Federal Government and the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Muhammed from using their patently unlawful directive to all TV and radio stations not to use Twitter, and to delete their accounts as a pretext to harass, intimidate, suspend or impose criminal punishment on journalists and broadcast stations simply for using social media platforms.”

This is in reaction to the order by the National Broadcasting Commission asking TV and radio stations to “suspend the patronage of Twitter immediately” after the social media giant was banned in the country for deleting tweets of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Reps begin Twitter ban probe today

The House of Representatives’ Committees on Communications; Justice; Information and Culture; and National Security and Intelligence are to hold their inaugural investigative hearing on Tuesday (today) after the expiration of the 10-day deadline given by the leadership of the House to investigate the ban placed on Twitter by the Federal Government.

Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, on June 8, 2021, said the leadership of the House had resolved to intervene in the decision that had pitched Nigerian Twitter users against the government. The leadership had mandated the committees to carry out an investigation, including inviting Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to explain the rationale behind the ban and the legality of the action. The panel was asked to report back within 10 days.

The PUNCH had reported on Monday that the joint committee had yet to act on the directive. However, the committee on Monday invited journalists to its investigative hearing scheduled for 10am on Tuesday.

ECOWAS court stops FG from prosecuting Nigerians

The ECOWAS court of Justice in Abuja has restrained the Federal Government and its agents from arresting or prosecuting Nigerians who are making use of social media platform, Twitter, which was suspended by Nigeria two weeks ago. The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had threatened to arrest and prosecute Nigerians who were using Virtual Private Network to bypass the suspension of Twitter.

Civil Society Organisation, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, and 176 concerned Nigerians, however, instituted a suit before the ECOWAS court, arguing that the unlawful suspension of Twitter in Nigeria, criminalisation of Nigerians and other people using Twitter had escalated repression of human rights and unlawfully restricted the rights of Nigerians and other people to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom in the country.

Twitter wants ban lifted, Reps say suspension dictatorial, ill-timed

The micro-blogging and social media platform, Twitter, has written the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), seeking restoration of its operations in Nigeria.

Reps fault FG, say suspension disservice to Nigerian. The lawmakers, however, faulted some of the issues raised by Mohammed. A member, Shaba Ibrahim (PDP/Kogi) said he agreed with the minister that national interest and security were at stake.

Twitter is the fastest way to spread short information quickly, especially if you want to promote shot clips or pictures then twitter has the biggest reach. If you manage to reach the top trending spots then millions of people will read your post. It's crazy that Nigeria is banning twitter, this censorship of the highest level. In my opinion it is wrong in trying to control the media. There will always be ways around such bans, like using VPNs.

The present Nigerian government is slowly drifting into a dictatorial system, Buhari and his government are rather more concerned in smothering freedom of speech in the country than addressing the more pressing issues of insecurity, unemployment, lack of basic amenities etc, it's not new to see Twitter delete a tweet that breaks any of their rules, so I'm quite surprised that the Nigerian government are reacting in this manner to a deleted tweet made by it's president which breaks one of Twitters rules.

The thing is that the Nigerian government are known for misplacing their priorities, just like when they placed a 'mini' ban on crypto in Nigeria, it's almost the same scenario with this Twitter ban. It is what it is and Nigerians are still accessing Twitter via VPN, the same way P2p crypto transactions became popular after the crypto ban, Nigeria's problems is way bigger than Twitter, and the government knows it, but they are clueless to tackle it, thus they go after things that barely matter.

It gets real dark before the light comes, and i suppose that the series of events including this ban is all what has to be before it becomes better for Nigerians. Twitter has really been a platform for citizens to freely criticize the government when it does bad or about to pass an unfavorable policy, and the Nigerian people have not spared the government on this platform because of their very very bad performance over the years, a situation that is looking like it is getting worse instead of better.

This ban is an excuse and a show that the Nigerian government have been carrying a grudge against its people for a long time now particularly the youths who have not spared them. Twitter deleting a tweet by the president is simply not excuse enough.

How he was voted for is like what is happening for most of the countries globally. Hoping that the one who they voted for will make their country better. But in reality, after it is done, the exact opposite of that hopes happens and new problems exists because of that person.

I don't know but I think that's how politics works, working yourself for people to trust you in your promises then doing the exact opposite months/years later.

Though what I said above is somehow common, banning a social media for such things is literally exposing themselves from their bad behaviours that what people is saying in social media is the truth and they're afraid that the people around the globe will know about it. Plus having that Hate speech law solidify that.

The Nigerian government has permanently banned Twitter for deleting the President's Tweet. The Twitter ban in Nigeria was quickly implemented, when many people in the country could not access the social network on June 5. However, some people try to circumvent the ban through virtual private networks (VPNs), which allow access to websites using an encrypted Internet connection.

Twitter declared (https://twitter.com/Policy/status/1401151115022979076) access to their services a "human right" despite banning Trump and other conservatives.

Does Nigeria have *free* elections? If so, this is ultimately an issue that needs to be resolved at the ballot box. Good luck and stay safe.

Despotic governments that suppress the freedom of expression of opinions and feelings on social media, especially Twitter and Facebook, will surely be doomed. The people's will to express their opinions cannot be stopped. Other means can be used, a VPN or a proxy can be used to bypass the ban.
The government in my country is smarter. They have allowed Twitter and Facebook but they monitor all opinions they don't like and they track them down and put them in jail.

When Twitter bans certain individuals everybody says "it is their platform and they have the right to stop serving." when a country bans a certain platform, everybody loses their minds.

Payback is a bitch.

It is their country and they have the right to ban any platform they want. Don't like it? Don't go to Nigeria.

I hope other countries join Nigeria.

The Twitter ban is against the will of citizens, if to ban a social media, there should be a good reason, but because of the war-like content the Nigerian president tweeted, Twitter had to suspend his account for 12 hours and also removed the content. The present Nigerian federal government are acting like authoritarian and all they does are displeasing citizens. Should a learned person ban Twitter because of what happened? It is a shame to Nigerians that we have this present government. When the formal government were there, Nigeria has its peak GDP, and the GDP has reduced during this present government, unemployment rate increased, the Twitter that some Nigerians are using to make money is also suspended, what kind of government is that? They conducted no research before the ban. If you even find out, the present government do not even know that Twitter is useful in money making and helping Nigerians in that aspect, because of they know, Twitter will not be suspended.

The ban is not against the will of the citizens because the current president of Nigeria has won the election in 2015 which reflects the will of the Nigerian people.

If the citizens of Nigeria are not pleasant with this decision, they are free to elect somebody else in the upcoming elections.

If twitter can suspend their users for not complying with their ToS, Nigeria has the right to ban twitter for not complying with the Nigerian law.

Which Nigerian law did Twitter go against?

Also, Nigerians are complaining about this Twitter ban and deemed it inappropriate and how bad the Nigerian economy is.

Banning the president of Nigeria that is the will and the voice of the Nigerian people.

If the Nigerians complain about these things, they can elect somebody else in the next elections.

I think the US should have banned Twitter too.

Banning the president of Nigeria that is the will and the voice of the Nigerian people.
Nigerian president Twitter account was only suspended for 12 hours after tweeting about Biafra war that has occured in the past (correct me if wrong). That definitely means Yorubas and Biafra people that are agitating for their own nations can lead to war, if not what the president meant is that, but that is exactly what the tweet is portraying. Recently, Yorubas are seeking for their own nation, saying enough of suffering and Fulani herdsmen killings.

This is very alarming. The headbof that country resorting to these things gives me a bad feeling. I think that Nigeria is slowly being dragged into a dictatorship way of ruling. If the people still chooses to be passive about this, I can only think of one outcome. And that is the head getting his ways without any problems. Now if this happens, it is pretty obvious that the country itself may fall into ruins. We all know already how bad the corruption is on Nigeria today, this would only make it worse. I really feel bad for the people in your country op. I hope things get better for Nigeria soon.

People in Egypt and Turkey used twitter to organize riots. Twitter did nothing. Twitter said it is freedom of speech.

People used twitter to gather in The Capitol, they banned the president of the United States.

Suddenly freedom of speech turned into terms of service.

Why is it OK when twitter does it, but not when somebody else does it?

Its really absurd, how one sided the Nigerian government can be about some issues relating to the nation especially when its got to do with politics and how citizens reacts to it with the means available which is the press.
It makes me wonder how they could have done any different. Seriously, to some extent, I think this is a deliberate craftsmanship with the aim of not just limiting or spreading fear 8n the minds of citizens as to there use of social media but also, to ensure that the press become cautious as to how much truth they publish in there breaking news.

There is no freedom of expression in Nigeria. You can no longer air your views or some disturbing truth no more. It would be termed fake news or edited details so long as it discredit the government and thats it. Live with it, they expect of us. That's really, really bad.

However, the ban on Twitter in Nigeria have been condensed by some Association including Nigeria Bar Association and Amnesty international.

Am surprised that in Nigeria, there is no Freedom of Speech anymore.

Nigeria has officially banned the use of twitter they have suspended twitter indefinitely this is because misinformation and fake news are being spread on social media platforms which has given rise to violence in the country as well as tarnished its own image in the world arena. The platform was spreading religious racist xenophobic and false messages that could damage relations with other countries. The government further alleged that twitter was being used to undermine nigeria's corporate existence and that crime was on the rise.

For some reason, Twitter thinks it should censor elected officials willy nilly. This censorship only hides potentially harmful content elected officials make, and this will make it more difficult for voters to hold the elected officials accountable at the ballot box.

What is even more bazare, Twitter thinks it is okay to allow unelected dictators to say what is arguably worse statements and not be censored.

Social media platforms such as Twitter and FaceBook think that they are above democratically elected officials (ironically this is the same thinking that we see in socialist utopias, such as Cuba and North Korea). They want the governments around the world to dance according to their whims and fancies. A few weak governments, such as the one in India may bend down and obey their orders. But in countries such as Nigeria and Myanmar, they are going to face a lot more opposition.

Twitter is very essential for promotion and ads. Banning twitter just because of some measly reasons is just so childish in my opinion. It would be better if they restore twitter in Nigeria since people and businesses obviously needs it. Besides, they will only look bad to the masses if they still choose to stand firm in banning twitter since it just gives the impression of them hindering freedom of information which will not do them any good. They better grow up and get over their useless tantrums.

Opinionated tweets are not being banned, unless they are spreading misinformations with no supporting documents/researches that will cloud the audiences mind.

Freedom is not free.
Free speech is not free either.
Nothing is Free.  Someone had to pay.
Twitter got US banking cartel / Chicom sponsored stooges front their funds.
If they don't ban free speech than money stop coming.

How hard is it for people to grasp this concept?  It is behooving.

Twitter ban in Nigeria have caused chaos in the country, and the government is reluctant in reconsidering it's statement on the ban of Twitter.I begin to wonder what will become the fate of the masses in years to come when the government is gradually turning to be dictatorial in nature, neglecting, silencing and subjecting the opinion of the public. The just banned platform was the only outfit integrating Nigeria, bringing people together from different scattered heterogenous groups, to speak one voice.SARS was put to an end with the help of this social media outfit known as Twitter, little wonder why government saw the unity, one voice and  integration among the citizens and decided to put it to an and,so as to silence, hush, quiten and suppress the voice of the masses.

Nigeria permanently bans Twitter, prosecutes users

The Nigerian government authorized the arrest and prosecution of Twitter users, after indefinitely banning the social network for deleting the President's tweets.

The new directive was issued by the Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General TổngNigeria Abubakar Malami on 5/6 and signed on behalf of the spokesman Umar Jibrilu Gwandu.
This is a really bad thing.
