I think the most optimistic outcome for Bitcoin would be to return to its roots, which is to play to the nature of bitcoin as a currency, as the opposite of global fiat currencies, coexisting with global fiat currencies and ready to replace the declining credit of fiat currencies, such as overissued US dollars.

You can't force Bitcoin to solely be whatever you want it to be. Whether you, me, other people, or Satoshi himself like it or not, people will be using Bitcoin for whatever they see fit outside using bitcoin as a currency — and that includes store of value and speculation. Because that's what free markets do, and there's really nothing wrong with it.

Whatever you imagine bitcoin's "return to the roots", it can't "become a currency"^* just like that for political and technical reasons:
- central banks and governments will not simply make way for the decentralized newcomer
- on-chain transactions are not suitable for payments at the grocery store

So in order to "become a currency"^* Bitcoin has to actually evolve, which is imho the opposite of returning to the roots.
And we'll be getting there too. The SegWit changes were for that reason. LN is also for that and it started to be used more and more.


^* Bitcoin is already a currency. For many years already. You can buy a lot of goods and services with it. It's indeed not "perfect" yet for average Joe, who doesn't understand network fees, mempool, block time and such, hence my reply.

I personally think that the result of optimism is that Bitcoin has entered a mature stage, and has no longer soared and plummeted. Like today's gold, it has become a stable investment product. At that time, I think the btc price is about 10 times higher than it is now. With the relaxation of policy supervision, the public has become more and more aware of it, and its market value continues to increase, and its volatility will eventually become smaller and smaller. Many countries we know are still unable to accept bitcoin as a legal medium of exchange, and only focus on fiat, because of course there are many obstacles that may occur. let bitcoin not have to play a role there, let fiat do it, but if where fiat is not able to do it, it can be ascertained that bitcoin can solve it. so there is continuity that can be done between them. this will obviously make bitcoin more welcome because it can solve the fiat problem.

bitcoin must be optimistic that later all will be able to accept the existence of bitcoin but it needs to be accepted well and there is mutual benefit because there are always differences to accept anything in every country.

I think the better result that bitcoin has created is the rate of adoption and use we have seen the last two years. Before this time, the rate of use wasn't this high and popularity has increased where we see that big buyers and institutional investors are coming in. The most optimistic for me is that everyone in the world and majority of the countries are into bitcoin already. Each countries have their own bitcoin reserve as an asset.

Based on what we have seen so far, the optimistic outlook is that bitcoin will serve as a store of value not just to individuals and institutions, but also to nation-states and government treasuries. In my opinion that's the realistic best case scenario.

More optimistic than that would be the situation where bitcoin is not only a store of value, but also used as an everyday currency and medium of exchange via higher-than-base-layer solutions... a world where fiat has decisively lost to bitcoin... where everything is priced in bitcoin and sats, where governments return to sound monetary policy because they can no longer print money like there is no tomorrow.

I think that a lot people know that is not going to happen, because a lot of people have deviated from the original idea and concept that bitcoin was founded upon, and they have started looking at bitcoin as a type of investment and not as a currency, they just buy and hold bitcoin without using it as the way it was intended which was to replace the fiat currencies, and the first thing that comes to someone who has no idea what bitcoin does looks at the price and says i can make a lot of money from it, so the most optimistic result of bitcoin right now would be it becoming the number one investment.

it can't be that easy to make a currency shift on a large scale. except as El Salvador did, it also requires steps that are not easy to adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender of exchange. and if as a currency then Bitcoin must have a control center. whereas Satoshi goal was not for that.

i'm not sure why you say "go back" because it suggests that bitcoin stopped being all the things you said which is not true. bitcoin has always been a medium of exchange and has been around alongside the other currencies but as the only decentralized one among them.
there are always a lot of speculators trading bitcoin. there are also a lot more people who are speculating about fiat in a market called "Forex" but that doesn't change the fact that what these people are trading is less of a currency.

Return to its roots? I mean Bitcoin is still being used alternatively for payments these days. I am not sure how it was purely used back then, but I do not think that we would still describe the adoption of Bitcoin as "returning to its roots". It is already a tree and it gave a seed to a lot of coins in the crypto market, but many of them turned out to be just a wilted ones. :D

Every technology has to evolved, Internet was developed from ARPANET then eventually group of networks and then it became the modern Internet that we know of. Same as cell or mobile phones, not it became not just a phone, but a "smart phone'. And so is the bitcoin, from a payment scheme, to store of value to an speculative asset, to hedge by companies in their balance sheet.

I really doubt it can happen so easily. Because to replace fiat itself which already used by all people in the world will need a lot of thing first. Bitcoin was supposed to be used as a currency, but there are some flaws with bitcoin that makes it almost impossible to use it as a regular day to day currency. We need to fix this issue without bring any risk to the security or changing the protocol. I doubt bitcoin will ever replace the current fiat currency anytime soon. The government around the world will not allow that to happen. The best we can see is that other centralized crypto currency (most likely made by the government) replacing the current fiat system.

Bitcoin will be scarce when it is almost touching the maximum supply and the price will be very high.I am now more convinced that bitcoin will be a digital asset not as a payment method, because there is many other coins have lower fees and better in many aspect if we talking about crypto as payment.

I personally don't really think about it. As long as many more people accept BTC in the world, no more FUD about it, BTC will be rising up. And about the against of the global currency, I know that this also becomes the goal of BTC itself. But if this not happens today, we may not need to force it. Bitcoin is already at its best and playing its role as a currency and also as a digital asset that can give a good return on investment.

The most optimistic result for bitcoin as I see it would be a global adoption.  This would be the phase where the potent of bitcoin would be unleashed to the world and would be an added advantage for those who already own some from this moment because it would be way valuable even to the least sat. I am with you here in regards to what bitcoin needs to be able to accomplish.  I hear a lot of people these days saying that bitcoin can work out just fine as a replacement to gold, or a "store of wealth", and I don't disagree with these assessments, but I also firmly believe bitcoin needs to be used as a currency for it's long term health and survival.

In my opinion, one of the optimistic outcome bitcoin has given to its investor is the financial freedom they can never get as they continue using fiat. The government has caged our chances to get a chance to be wealthy because they are too greedy of getting all of the people's money. Actually there are a lot more optimistic outcome that bitcoin caused like improvement on one's responsibility and life. A lot of people are much grateful in bitcoin as they get the right timing for it and benefit a lot from it. The best-case scenario is that Bitcoin is used worldwide as a currency. Bitcoin becomes a global currency, people can use Bitcoin anywhere in the world easily. Well yeah, indeed it would be very nice to see bitcoin becoming or actually being what satoshi designed it to be. Having such a thing happen would be very interesting since it would literally change the way this world works. Too bad though that it is as close as to impossible for this to happen. Just looking at how bitcoin is being used now, you just know that there's no going back. And besides, there are also a lot of factors today that would hinder any crypto currency at the moment to be the in line with satoshi's vision. That's just how it is. But hey, at least we are heading to mass adoption pretty fast so at least in a sense, it's still okay.

I personally like one factor of bitcoin and that is it's deflationary nature. Since the supply is limited it increases in price almost every year.
Holding fiat is like giving away your money to someone else while holding bitcoin gives you the ability to 'own' your money while getting pretty good returns on it.

Firstly, even at the beginning of Bitcoin, there were traders and people who wanted to make money from it. There were many people who didn't quite understand what's Bitcoin and what is its purpose, so they made all they could out of it and so Bitcoin merely as a means for making a profit.
Secondly, not necessarily returning to the roots would be better. The possibility of making money with Bitcoin, though contradicts with its true nature, attracts investors, companies, public people. And without that Bitcoin wouldn't be what it is today.

Having bitcoin as a currency would mean reaching its goal already but since the government are greatly opposed with its currency legalization so it's hard for bitcoin to be a global currency.

Its not actually the opposite of fiat as you have said on your statement. It was already been recognized as an alternative monetary system thus making it easier for people to transact payments thru online without worrying any third party involvement. That is the strong benefit of bitcoin.

I assume Bitcoin doesn't need to return to its nature since Bitcoin is also used as a payment tool nowadays. Although not all countries accept it, its function as a currency is still there. Bitcoin can become the base layer for virtually unlimited number of applications built upon it. DeFi apps are built on a sidechain of Bitcoin (RSK) as we speak. Some are already generating great waves of interest. I don't think there is a "result" for Bitcoin. I see it more as an ever evolving network. Perhaps you can call them milestones like achieving a certain market cap or on-chain volume, but you can't call them a "result".

Unfortunately, the term payment network would awake false hopes for many. It is like calling a truck a car, renting a truck out as a car to a couple who wants to have some relaxed holidays traveling in a nice car. Bitcoin is not what one would call a payment network I guess. Maybe a special purpose payment network at best. Imagine you never found out about Bitcoin before and someone says to you it is a payment network. You say cool, let me get Bitcoin and grab some coffee. Uhm, well, the fee will be three times as high as the price of your coffee and you may need to wait for an hour until your payment is confirmed. Bitcoin may evolve towards a payment network, but right now I'd say it is for sure not a general purpose payment network.

Thanks for the reply! I agree with you to a certain extent. Bitcoin is not yet at a point where we can use it as an effective and efficient payment network due to the volatility of price. This is why I see its growth as a two-phase evolution. Until it reaches high levels of liquidity it will act more as an appreciating asset. Once the liquidity has established at higher level prices like (I'm thinking at 6 figures), we might see reduced volatility due to the involvement of banks, market-makers, etc.

If Bitcoin reaches low volatility, its use as a payment method would be more viable for people who are risk-averse. Alternatively, with all the financial engineering that we have today someone can create a decentralized currency that is pegged to dollar, but backed by BTC. If I'm not wrong there is already an incipient solution created by Money On Chain team.

Lightning network solves the waiting and the fee problem. We just need coffee shops to integrate it. :)

The "ready to replace fiat currencies" part is really debatable. Because there are still big problems like scalability for Bitcoin. This is the biggest problem I think and they should incline to solving this problem to make Bitcoin even much better for high-amount of transactions.

Are you really still asking these sort of questions? Have you read about El Salvador? If that's not fulfilling bitcoin's mission I don't what else could do that. Now the optimistic result is to have as many countries as possible being able to recognize bitcoin has a legal tender! That would make it!

It is already a currency between major people who wish to accommodate Bitcoin as a payment option for their goods and those who are spending it to purchase those goods from the people accepting it. However, the volatility of Bitcoin is on a high scale for any country to accept it as a legal currency replacing their traditional owned currency. The best any country can do is to follow the same principle as El Salvador. The most optimistic result so far has to be fact that it is a powerf house of transaction involving only the receiver and the sender without the interference of third parties.

bitcoin doesnt need to return to its original phase because it didnt move anywhere but btc is still btc and until now lots of people are using btc as a means of currency .
 this could be one of the optimisitc result of btc but there are others like the growth of btc price or the adoption that it recieve . also people are optimistic when they saw this achievements made by btc . this makes them trust and invest more

Only the optimistic result of Bitcoin?? I think of 2 scenarios

1. Bitcoin will go to the moon reaching prices like $100k, $300k, $500k and soon a million per BTC. I know that it sounds very optimistic but hey... that is what I see :D.
2. More establishments, more business, more stores and more people will accept Bitcoin.

Both of these 2 will happen but the only question is when. Its starting to happen but it will take time before these will be reach. The second one is starting to happen as we already see more that are accepting it :).

all that mentioned is the best qualities of bitcoin and the reason why the result is really optimistic and we can see those in the reaction of people inside and those who are entering to invest.

Most realistic - major currencies become devalued over time, not crash or collapse, and Bitcoin becomes a competitor of major currencies, forcing governments to keep spending in check and hopefully take a hands off approach of economic policy.

I wouldn't mind competition between currencies, with a decentralized currency keeping every government motivated to not drift too off course, because either way, it involves BTC becoming a major player.
