Title: [WTS] 2012 Casascius 5 BTC coin unredeemed
Post by: matthew412 on June 25, 2021, 09:29:44 PM
Hi,

I have a physical bitcoin I'm interested in selling. I am the sole owner; it has never changed hands since I got it several years ago. It's in good condition but not perfect; it wasn't kept in a protective case.

Specifically it is this one: https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/1CsxvRCGk9H1Fs4hQawtLp9e5PWjdD9q5Q

According to https://casasciustracker.com/?flt1_balance_equals=5 (https://casasciustracker.com/?flt1_balance_equals=5), there are 693 unredeemed 5 BTC Casascius coins left of 1262 total.

Happy to hear either offers for it or opinions of what it's worth. I could take cryptocurrency for it or I could consider other forms of payment.

Nice coin! I haven't seen one of those in a while here.
1 BTC coins seem to go for around 1.05-1.15 BTC with ~0.02-0.03 BTC forks included

Considering the 5 BTC is more rare, 5.5 BTC sounds like a reasonable price maybe?

Unfortunately with current BTC prices this is way out of my reach  :'(

I have a lot of Cas, but not a 5 BTC. They don’t come up frequently. In today’s market I think a more accurate valuation would be 5.2, IMO, especially in that condition, but others who maybe have a pulse on recent 5 BTC Cas sales please chime in.

I picked up an MS68 5 BTC a few months back (pre ATH) for 5.9, so definitely agree that 5.5 BTC might be pushing it for an ungraded one in the current climate. 5.2-5.3 BTC seems reasonable to me

Appears that there is another MS68 5 BTC available here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5148944.0) (unclear if up to date, but no SOLD status yet) for 5.6, so 5.5 is probably a no-go for most people.

Nice coin. Seems to have some BTC dust on it, 2 transactions but that's no problem.

Seems to be a series 2 coin (correct me if I am wrong), even more rare

Series              Total    Active   Redeemed

Series 2    5 BTC   587     332       255

For the record I got two offers so far by PM. One was 5.35 BTC but the message had lots of typos and didn't seem trustworthy. The other was for an unspecified amount in cash which I'm not comfortable doing.

If I were you I would also read this good thread by SatsLife about selling here... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5277761.0

Goodluck with your sale and yes careful as well.

Suggestion, Only accept a deal for meet up only. Due to high value inside that coin, It's very risky to entrust it on a courier. Try to Auction it then just indicate a starting bid price that you can afford to sell your coin. Just follow the above link posted by Krogoth for guide.

Goodluck.

While this is in practice always a good idea, it isn't always possible.  Sometimes you have to trust shipping.  I've never lost a package inside the US and have been shipping items to customers for 20+ years.  That being said, there's always a first for everything.

Perhaps the more concerning thing to me would be the actual exchange.  You could be robbed or left meeting with nobody.  I would recommend using escrow no matter what you do to avoid these two issues and having the escrow take possession of the coin and reship it to the customer isn't a bad option.  This way you can be certain that the customer won't claim you shipped them a worthless item instead of the Casascius coin.  However, a plane ticket for this item would probably be cheaper...

If you need a trusted escrow agent with a PO Box willing to accept, verify, and reship your item to a customer while safeguarding your item, I would be willing to do so.  I believe minerjones offers this service as well.  If you wanted to take safety to another level, you could use one escrow agent as a reshipper, and the other to hold the funds.  While having more hands in the pot typically means more opportunities for mistakes, given the extreme value of the item I do not think taking as many precautions as possible is a bad idea.  Good luck with your sale!  Remember that peeling is always an option as well and while having it's own concerns, is likely less of a risk than a sale.

DaveF and I lost an item shipped within the U.S. via UPS. I wouldn't trust a 5 BTC Cas in the hands of UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc. given that experience. Before that, I was more trusting.

Current highest reputable offer is 5.45 BTC, possibly including a 2011 or 2013 Cas 1 BTC coin. So feel free to make a higher offer.
