Title: Large PS4 Mining farm busted in the Ukraine
Post by: btcshiner on July 15, 2021, 11:06:07 PM
So how much hash does a PS4 give you and what coin/s do you mine with it?

Kind of crazy to see rows of PS4's lined up like that.

I guess a shady illegal mining with free power (like it seems they did in Ukraine) is needed for PS4 mining to turn profit

I'm curious what kind of hash rates they got from a PS4 as well.

At some point they had to do a calculation that it was more profitable to mine with them than sell them or purchase different equipment.

Let's say they got all these PS4's in used in a wholesale auction.  They probably still had to pay $150 each.  That's over $500k USD.  Do they mine better than a 1050 ti or AMD equivalent?  So do they mine more than a 1060 6gb?  Those were around up till say January for reasonable costs.

It looked clean and well set up so I would imagine it was running for a little while.

I heard about this a few days ago and somebody pointed out that the article is false and they weren’t mining. Instead they were doing some farming to get some credits and they were selling those for profit. This is no different than those large iPhone/Android farms you see where you got some poor soul which needs to watch ads all day 24 hours.

Mining might be possible but the efficiency would be horrible because you got an entire console just to power one GPU. And most likely the speeds would be maybe 20mhs perhaps. And these days that is not as profitable as it was a few months back.

Either way, very clean and professional operation they had going.

I believe at some point it was possible to install linux on ps4, also they had like 6 or 8 core cpus that would probably crunch monero well, at the price point probably better then some pc cpus

according to some reports, one ps4 can mine nearly at the power of rx 580. i doubt about the efficiency though, it's probably not profitable if you don't have free energy or low-cost electricity source. not sure about the accuracy though, iirc ps4 use gcn architecture so it should be comparable to a gpu based on similar architecture.

You can't mine on PS4 console it's still impossible right now, I'm guessing those miners are scalpers too, they must have bought those PS4 at cheaper rate and selling just like other scalpers as well, don't believe everything you read online

If that is the truth which for me is a bit hard to believe because if it were then many other people would have used the PS4 to mine. However let's consider for a moment that is true and that their CPU is good for Monero but also as far as I know they come with a special GPU from AMD 8 GB card Radeon GCN architecture (40 CU-Compute Units in PS4 Pro),imagine now what the PS5 can do as its specs are way higher than PS4.

Still though I don't believe it because as I said before many other people would have done it while it is only now that I am reading these kind of news.

That may have been in Malaysia and was likely confiscated from a mining farm stealing power.

They weren't scalping them.  The second link I posted is a Ukraine government site with pictures of the Farm with PS4's in rows of racks for mining or possibly farming credits.

They also had 500 plus graphics cards and the processors needed to run them.

Wish the Ukraine's would give us more details.

They were farming Fifa credits or something. They weren't used for mining crypto.
