Title: Linux GPU Rig Tutorial - Please Suggest
Post by: sandy56 on August 05, 2021, 04:12:07 PM
I would like to setup a Linux mining rig for alt coins.

I have AMD RX 580 GPUs.

Please suggest a tutorial. Thanks.

Are you good with Linux and all its commands? Its a completely different operating system from Windows which is mostly plug and play. In Linux its difficult installing your miner software or even configuring your OC settings.

So if you are not too technical your best bet is just to get some Linux distro like HiveOS. If you got like 4 GPUs, then I think its free and if you got more then it costs a couple of dollars per month. Its easy to use and makes the install a breeze.

You can also install it manually if you want however keep in mind that you will run into issues, especially with AMD gpus. So if you got a large farm, install the Linux the free method. Might take a few days to get everything set up. However if you only got 1 rig, save yourself the hassle and use HiveOS or something similar.

Thanks for the reply.

I am not well versed with Linux.

I have 6 AMD RX 580 GPUs.

I do have them setup with windows 10 but the system does not seem to work all that
well and seems to be constantly doing a diagnostic because of all the gpu cards.

So I though I might give Linux a try.

However, if you know of a good, recent Windows tutorial, please suggest that as well.

I don’t understand what’s going on with you? Does the system constantly reboot?
What is the hashrate of your video cards and what are the settings?
Perhaps you have set an increased overclocking, write your values.
Linux is more convenient, but this system will also not work stably in case of overclocking?

Here is a suggestion for you. Maybe try a minimal 'Debian (https://debian.org/)' OS install or install 'POP!_OS (https://pop.system76.com/)'. I suggest installing 'fish shell (https://fishshell.com/)', and get familiar with the CLI. POP!_OS is good because all the drivers seem to work, although 'RaveOS (https://raveos.com/)' or 'HiveOS (https://hiveos.farm/)' both have nice web-interfaces..

Every Linux will work but it needs from you to learn basic commands to know your way around that system, there are quite some tutorials on Linux mining but they need you to understand Linux well first.I use Ubuntu 18.04 for mining but even in Windows 10 if you do the right overclocking and undervolt plus you use the latest versions of the risers you should be doing quite well.

Here are the best settings for RX 580 in Windows OS:

Core Voltage 850
Core clock 1150 (better to not go higher here, reason of crashing most of time)
Memory clock you can go up to 2150 but it can make reboots happen so better to max out at 2100 (depending on your card memory Samsung supports up to 2150 but other not that well)
