What do you mean of free wallet? Do you mean of those web wallet with no cost or a shitty scam wallet exchange?

Web wallet isn't good from many aspect like security, privacy and features. Not open source, no private key, no RBF CPFP, custom fee, not segwit etc. It's just designed for quick access, no cost and simple only. If you don't have any money to buy hardware wallet, you could use light weight non custodial wallet (e.g. Electrum, Samourai) it's also free and better than custodial wallet (one of them is web wallet).

Here's your other post, as you wrote you got hacked from blockchain wallet (web wallet) don't you think it's not safe?

My Bitcoin Wallet was hacked last year from my blockchain wallet.  There is no # and there support wont reply to me.

My first choice of a Bitcoin wallet is a hardware wallet. But it is not a free wallet. Regardless, I think you should also go for it despite it not being free. Safety comes with a price most of the time. I don't mind paying for as long as my funds are safe. But although it is not free, it is cheap. A Trezor Model One would only cost you around $57 and a Ledger Nano S around $72. That's a cheap compromise for complete ownership and control of your funds. Take note to buy such wallets from their official sites.

Pretty much every single Bitcoin wallet is free, besides hardware wallets of course. (which you should be using)

But anyway, personal pick is BlueWallet[1] for the newbies, and WasabiWallet[2] for the slightly more "advanced" Bitcoiners.

A paper wallet if you really want to skimp on spending and want it to be safe maybe? Idk if it has changed or something in the past years but it was what I used when I first started. Now I'm just holding small amounts on exchanges and would probably switch over to a hardware wallet once my investment exceeds a thousand dollars or two. I'd reckon it wouldn't really hurt if you used free wallets in exchanges if you're only trading small amounts, but if you were going big, then I'd really suggest going for a hardware wallet.

I think that from a security perspective, hardware wallets are superior. It is disconnected from the network. This means that we will not face hackers losing coins, and truly realize that personal assets will not be infringed. The disadvantage is that the fees are more expensive and only support some Mainstream currency. But I think its advantages can make me turn a blind eye to his shortcomings.

I've switched mainly between Wasabi Wallet and Electrum. Wasabi can be great for privacy but it is missing features that I use a lot like pay-to-many. If there was a wallet that combined the best features from each of these wallets then it would be the perfect choice.

Those are the best wallets out there.

Be very careful to always download electrum only from https://www.electrum.org as there are many phising sites out there.

Personally, I prefer electrum as it has more advanced functions like coin control (which is very important from privacy), pay to many, and so on.

This is like me in my earliest months in crypto. I once had small funds sparsely scattered across exchanges. I never thought of buying a hardware wallet because it costs a considerable percentage of my overall funds until I read a good amount of materials where people are complaining of locked funds mostly on exchanges. I myself had also a good share of forced KYC from exchanges.

I think a thousand dollars or two is a long wait for your funds to be kept in a safe storage. I even consider half a thousand a treasure enough to be kept in a hardware device. I guess it is better if we look at the future rather than the present's price in terms of safely keeping our Bitcoin.

If you can buy a hardware wallet, get one and use it most of the time.
I only custodial wallets when there is a service that I would like to use along with my Bitcoin, but most of those BTC I bought are being held in desktop wallets specifically Electrum wallet, I've been using that since 2018.

Back then, I thought custodial wallets were a gem, but dang. It was whole a lot of different story when I found out about the strictness of their KYC, while I was wanting to go full pseudonymous.

I think the first sticky thread on this board itself got the answer for this.

Electrum which is free, light weight, available on multiple operating system including Android...

My first choice for bitcoin wallet must have quite a list of features:
1. It must work with hardware wallet. And this also clearly means it's non custodian.
2. It must be light (SPV) wallet since I don't have a 24/7 node running and I don't have the patience to wait too much until it syncs.
3. Coin control and custom fee are pretty much a must. RBF capability is also nice to have.
4. Clean interface.

My main wallet is Electrum for Windows.
As a secondary wallet which I use for tracking in/out and for emergencies I use Mycelium for Android.

Hint, hint: import some keys, sign your transaction, broadcast at your leisure. :)
The wallet that combines the best features of both is the combination of your brain and your hands.

One half-measure(eighth-measure even) is to use Wasabi's change address as your secondary output. Not the same as pay-to-many when N>2, though.

it is recommended to use the ether wallet, which is recommended by the Bitcoin development team.
what?

closest name on .org is Bither (https://bitcoin.org/en/wallets/desktop/linux/bither/) if that's what you'd meant.

No wallet is omnipotent, so choose the Bitcoin wallet that suits you best.
Centralized Bitcoin Wallet:
  • It is easy to understand for novices.
  • Collection and payment are convenient and fast, and transactions, loans, etc. can be made.
  • The mobile phone can directly access the wallet.
Decentralized wallet:
  • The safest storage of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
  • The backup is convenient and not easy to be attacked by hackers.
  • Set up is relatively easy.
So no matter what kind of needs, you can choose whether you want to be safe or convenient, but I have both downloaded and used at the same time.

When showing the pros and cons of both kinds of wallets, I think it's absolutely necessary to put heavy emphasis on the importance of decentralizednon-custodial wallets.

  • Far more secure assuming you know how to secure your backups (preferably use a hardware wallet)
  • Centralized entities cant lock you out of your money (compared to custodial wallets/exchanges like Coinbase)
  • Transact freely anytime with zero downtime
  • No AML/KYC

Bitcoin wallets are supposed to be free if that's what you mean, hope you aren't talking about the same old free wallet that has no private keys and no recovery seed? If that's what you mean free wallet is a bad choice for keeping bitcoin, the best choice is hardware wallet like trezor and others follow buy trust wallet

A paper wallet if you really want to skimp on spending and want it to be safe maybe?
It's a crucial step in making a paper wallet for a newbie, I will not recommend this if you're a rookie because most likely there's a possible error that could lead to your fund will be lost.  Much better if OP uses an Electrum wallet that can prefer as an airgap Bitcoin wallet if you really want a cold storage wallet, it's offline and very safe to anyone, because, for me, anything online will most likely be there's the potential to be hacked.

Actually, there are too many various kinds of single Bitcoin wallets online that you can free to use, but only Electrum wallet has a good feature that I prefer to use.  It should be,
  • Open Source
  • Support Lightning Network
  • Can able to RBF
  • Can work offline
  • Support SegWit
  • It's totally free

IF that is a big and huge amount, Hardware wallets (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5282364.0) are the best for you.

It depends if you are using wallet for holding or spending Bitcoin but Open Source, trusted and tested by experts, should be priority when choosing wallet for you.
Mobile and desktop wallets are free but they are mostly hot wallets used for spending coins unless you use them on some airgapped computer.
Hardware wallets are not free but they are better choice for average crypto users.
All wallets listed bellow are Open Source:

Mobile wallets::
Electrum (https://electrum.org/)
BlueWallet (https://bluewallet.io/)

Desktop wallets:
Electrum (https://electrum.org/)
Wasabi (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5064006.0)

Hardware wallets::
Trezor (https://trezor.io/)
Coldcard (https://coldcardwallet.com/)
Bitbox (https://github.com/digitalbitbox)

You get almost every bitcoin wallet for free. Apart from a hardware wallet, you have to pay a few dollars for it.

I use Electrum on PC and have coinomi for android mobile.

I suggest you never use a blockchain wallet and Freewallet these could freeze your wallet any time they want.

Well i saw the expertise are given their opinion which are truely best option what they give. But excluding hardware wallet i didn't hear maximum of wallet name what they suggested. But now i will check it out your topic increase my little knowledge. Yeah my first priority is also a hardware wallet. Because its safe, secured and not expensive too. Because if we need safty for our money then its also a investment. Though last week i order a nano s and waiting for its delivery this investment is for my security.

Now basically i used centralized wallet because i trade a little bit so i need to hold my money on different centralized exchange. And my choices wallet and exchange is binance, kucoin, gate.io, coinbase, mxc & ftx because they had live chat features too and i got my solution very fast. And by good i had never face any type of money lost. I always careful. But verysoon my nano s is coming for holding.
Thats it its mine thought others can be different. Thank you

I use three types of wallets for holding bitcoin. My advice is not to keep all the funds in one wallet. Hardware wallet Trezor is better. Electrum is great in mobile wallets and I also prefer Electrum in desktop wallets. and if you want to trade daily base then I suggest holding fund Binance exchange.

Coinomi and electrum are the only wallet adopted by me, I
have my personal reasons why I've chosen them
Electrum basically for my btc
Coinomi for bounties and airdrops redemption among others.

Bitcoin Core is the only choice if you want to run a full node. I would not use any other wallet for a full node. If you do not want to run a node or store the full Blockchain then Electrum is the best option. If you want to have the safest online wallet then you would go with a hardware wallet. Any other wallets are not to be considered and I do not understand why they make new wallets when we have covered all basis with 3 of the above.

I have used binance, blockchain I know this aren't full wallet they are majorly exchanges but I have used them nevertheless but not as a long time wallet, am using electrum, and I really appreciate them, so long I keep my seed safe and password in transferring electrum, I like the way I can alter transaction fee, and really I am excited am the charges and the time for a transaction to be completed, so my preferred exchanges for me now is electrum, but for further safety I advice their cold wallet, but am really on the go most times.

Bitcoin Core due to its fee controls, API for developers, easy encrypted wallet file backup in the menu, and it contributes to the network. It also doesn't depend on third-party wallet API providers to process your transactions. This is safer and it also uses deterministic builds, which is good from a transparency standpoint

Well I have to admit that I have chosen the wrong free wallet before which made some of the coins lost. That was a freewallet.org, a mobile app wallet that has horrible service, I have lost a lot of my tokens as a bounty hunter and even their support did not answer you. Prepare your nightmare if you will sue this wallet, I suggest avoiding this wallet as much as possible. Later on, I discover Coinomi wallet which is support altcoins and bitcoin as well, but since you cannot modify the fees for bitcoin I am looking for a single bitcoin wallet that supports only bitcoin and fortunately --I found electrum that is a free good bitcoin wallet, you can use as a cold or hot wallet.

If i could choose i will always choose The Ledger Nano X is the second generation hardware wallet from Ledger, because the device itself is a cold storage hardware wallet. This gives users the ability to add new wallets for different cryptocurrencies to their devices and manage their portfolios. Ledger hardware wallets have been, and currently are, the most popular in the industry. So no doubt it will be my choice.

After know airdrop and bounty, i create others wallet like MyEtherWallet and etc. Now move them to my phone in Trust Wallet and next i will buy hardware wallet Safepal S1 Wallet.
MyEtherWallet is not a Bitcoin wallet, it is an ethereum wallet that also support ethereum tokens. Do you know that trust wallet is not an open source wallet, this is one of the major reasons I can not use it, close source wallets are not good to be used. The best wallets I have used before is electrum wallet but I am planing to still buy hardware wallet, I will prefer to buy trezor because it is open source and more tested than any other open source hardware wallets.

Personally, I am using a Blockchain web/android wallet for my Bitcoin. I am using Blockchain since the beginning of my crypto journey. Not yet faced big issues with my wallet. I have seen a lot of blockchain wallet issues in this forum, but still, I am fine with this wallet.

I know, for holding Bitcoin it's not good, Hardware wallets are best. As I am not holding any Big amount so I am fine with my Blockchain wallet. I also use Trust wallet sometimes to do Bitcoin transactions. If anyone wants to hold bitcoin, I would suggest a hardware wallet/Electrum wallet. It's best of all.

Not everyone knew the difference of decentralized wallet Vs centralised wallet when they are newbie in crypto space, I as a person started my crypto journey with copay wallet which gives me recovery seed but I still ended up moving my coins out to a centralised wallet that only requires email and password, in the end I lost my coins but today I use trust wallet and coinomi wallet only, maybe if I have huge amount of BTC some day I would buy hardware wallet instead

If you want to have the safest online wallet then you would go with a hardware wallet.
Hardware wallets aren't considered online wallets. Even if connected to online devices like computers, the private keys stay protected in secure offline environments. That makes them convenient cold wallets.

@2girls1facemask
Since you have already been hacked in the past, you might not be the most security-conscious individual. I am not sure how much of a help a desktop wallet will be to you if you have a tendency to visit dubious websites and download various things off the internet.

If you have a spare computer/laptop and you are eager to learn, look into setting up an airgapped device by reformatting the OS and making sure it can no longer be connected to the internet. Electrum is one of the wallets that you can use as cold storage and make sure that your private keys and recovery phrases never touch the internet.

If that sounds interesting to you, feel free to check out the linked guides below:

Apart from the hard wallets, obviously, in my particular case I have always used the Electrum Wallet and it has always worked smoothly, so this is the one I always recommend to my friends when they start operating with Bitcoin.

I will have to prove Wasabi Wallet some day, anyway, as this is not the first time I hear about it from veteran members, but I don't find the right moment to do it.

If I were to choose a free Bitcoin wallet as my first choice, I’ll go for Blockchain wallet. I simply don’t trust storing my BTC in centralized exchanges and wallets. However, if I have budget that would make my Bitcoin secured even more, I’ll go for Ledger Nano S (which I already have) and may plan to buy Trezor as well in the future.

What is your first choice of a bitcoin wallet?  If its a free wallet thats even better.

I use multiple wallets. Since I trade many coins, I first choose the best exchange where the particular coin in traded. I convert tokens, coins into usdt, btc and etc. So based on what coin i hold, i use wallets. I use coinbase, binance, wazirx, coinomi, crex24, cointiger and etc. All these wallets are 2fa enabled along with other secure features. All are accessible via Mobile device.
