Title: What happens to DMs sent by a newbie after they're not a newbie?
Post by: nullama on September 28, 2021, 02:26:29 AM
I just realized there's an option in the user profile: Personal Message Options->Allow newbies to send you PMs, which is disabled by default.

If you're a newbie, and send a DM to someone that doesn't have that enabled, what happens to that message?

Is it visible when the sender is not a newbie anymore?, or is it never delivered?

Just wondering if there will be a duplicated DM if you send one while being newbie(which may not be seen by the receiver), and another one when you're not a newbie anymore(which should be seen by the receiver).

You will not be able to send it at all.

While we're at it, slow it down a notch, you're borderline shitposting. This ain't twitter.

It would be clearer if sending DMs is disabled for newbies as you say, but that's at least not what it seems to be happening from the perspective of a newbie account.

I was able to reply to a DM as a newbie. The forum didn't say anything, and the message went through. It's there on my outbox.

When looking at my sent DM it seems that the forum prepends this text to it:

!!! WARNING: This user is a newbie. If you are expecting a message from a more veteran member, then this is an imposter !!!

So, that's why I created this post. I'm not sure what will happen to that DM when I get to the next level.

Will it eventually become visible to the receiver?, or do I need to re-send the DM once I'm on the next level?

I doubt you can make "Allow newbies to send you PMs" much clearer. It does exactly what it says.

Your PM was not blocked and the recipient can see it. That red warning is attached to all newbie PMs regardless of settings. If the recipient is blocking newbie PMs you won't be able to send a PM to them.

Great. That answers all my question, thanks!

The forum doesn't prevent newbies from sending PMs. As long as the other party is ready to receive PMs from newbies, it will work. If the option to prevent newbies from sending PMs is enabled by the receiving party, it won't. Two newbies can also exchange PMs with each other if both change the default PM settings in their accounts.
