Title: What was the first altcoin created?
Post by: nullama on November 04, 2021, 10:01:46 AM
I'm wondering if anyone knows what was the first ever altcoin created.

Probably it took some time after genesis for someone to come up with an alt.

It says namecoin.

Currently namecoin is almost dead with its volume. But its ranking is below 800.

Tried to do a search about it and it turns out that it is indeed Namecoin, I thought it was Litecoin which I'm wrong Litecoin was the only fork of Bitcoin. However the Namecoin project died and was discontinued and probably the next coin that come is the Litecoin, I wasn't sure about this though.

Lol are you serious? How long you have been here? someone was also giving the right answer if name coin was the first altcoin. It seems like you were not using your google properly.
We know the history of altcoins. So many old members here know so well about that. name coin was forking the bitcoin code and it was giving some changes to the code and then it was coming as namecoin.
People just know that if doge and litecoin were the first altcoin created because they ddin't know about the history of altcoin so well.

Many would have thought Litecoin but since we're not yet there when both have been launched, it's better to do a bit of research.

Next to namecoin is you're right. It's Litecoin, despite being one of the oldest altcoins in the market, it's still on demand and one of the top coins in the market today.

Giestgeld was an early alt, I'm not sure if it was the first (september 2011)

I mined some back in the day but it was a pita to setup the miner!

It took around two years for the earliest altcoin to come out. Both Namecoin and Litecoin were released in 2011. We all know that Bitcoin was launched in 2009. So they're more or less 2 years younger than Bitcoin. Namecoin is a bit older than Litecoin because it was released in April of 2011 while Litecoin was in October. Additionally, both were actually forks of Bitcoin. They're basically copies of Bitcoin. It is unfortunate that Namecoin is already dying. But it is good that Litecoin is still very much alive, still one of the most trusted altcoins in the whole crypto market.

as far as I know it is as @livingfree said because it is Namecoin, announced in April 2011.
on the other hand the coins are still active and mined for now.
but because from the beginning I entered this circle I only focused on coins that were quite big like LTC, ETH and even when I got to know crypto a few years ago it started with BTC and doge so I didn't look at this coin (NMC)

Yes, you are right and it is just a copy of Bitcoin, namecoin were quite famous in the early crypto and major exchanges at that time also traded them, community support is very important for the survival of a coin and it can be seen how namecoin that lack support eventually become dead coins while bitcoin survives to date.

As I know the first altcoins were all forks of Bitcoin. The first one was Namecoin and it was launched on 2009 that was not very long after Bitcoin's releasing. Today this coin is not very popular judging from its trading volume and it takes only the 780th place on CoinMarketCap and being trade far lower that its All Time Highs taht was about 12$.

It is a must with community support.

Unlike Litecoin, there's been a massive support for LTC and that's why it's still existing and with a decent volume that we're all liking and as well as its market cap.

There are many of them after Litecoin.

It's my first time hearing about that coin but I feel quite disappointed hearing that it's already a dead coin now. If it's the first altcoin then it should have created a good foundation already. I think that developers weren't able to handle and support the entire coin's journey. It should've had a good value now if they just managed to handle it well.

There are many of the early altcoins that have became popular once and not anymore. But it's also amazing to see a quite few of them that are still standing and being traded.

About its history.

It's for you to search what actually happened with it.

AFAIK this coin is not dead but they are currently struggling as indeed their coin is running low due to lack of interest from investors and there is still no good enough project with this coin.
their market ranking is at 784 on CMC and actually they are quite improved for now.
but indeed for now history or not everything is not too much attention, the most important thing is that the benefits obtained while holding new coins will be considered

The first altcoin was Namecoin, which was based on Bitcoin's code and was released in April 2011. Namecoin is integral to the history of altcoins in that it showed that there's enough room in the crypto markets for more than one kind of coin

Title: Re: What was the first altcoin created?

It is namecoin, although that coin is pretty much dead right now. The oldest surviving altcoin currently belongs to litecoin, a supposedly 'lite' version of bitcoin that provided faster transactions and generally lighter software. It was quite interesting that namecoin, although being the first altcoin created, didn't get much traction during its creation, and that litecoin managed to stay up there with bitcoin during bitcoin's many bull runs and downtrends.

LiTeCoin (LTC) was the third scrypt-based coin, first came TeneBrix (TBX) which had a "pre-mine", then FairBriX (FBX) touting the fact that unlike TeneBriX it didn't have a "pre-mine", then eventually LiTeCoin whose main selling-points were that is was newly re-based on BiTCoin code and its author got a job that gave him an enhanced ability to "market" his coin.

TBX and FBX currently trade on the HORIZON and Stellar platforms. The HORIZON platform is itself very under-the-radar these days, so probably Stellar is the better place to start trading them; HORIZON's native currency, HZ is itself also traded on stellar:

https://stellar.expert/explorer/public/asset/HZ-GBHAQ252S4Z4AQOM4BWIRC3UHAOJIKCZQBUJGD336YH2O7W2NKRXMHA5

GeistGeld also dates back to that early period, it was implemented using config-file-configured "multicoin" code that let you specify your coin's major characteristics in the config file. FBX and TBX I think maybe also derived from "multicoin" but rather than stick with the config-file way of setting a coin's characteristics they went more hard-coded.

GeistGeld (XGG) is also still alive and traded on the HORIZON and Stellar networks, here is link for it in Stellar:

Perhaps the way you query google for the answer was wrong because i just did after seeing your post to verify if actually there was no information about the first ever altcoin that was created in google but it turns out there was,

Quote
"What was the first Altcoin?
The first Altcoin to appear was the Namecoin. It was introduced in 2011 and, for a short period of time, it was the only alternative to Bitcoin. It was born with the purpose of improving internet security and privacy".
here is an answer from google about namecoin, so there you have your answer.

The first altcoin released to the public was Namecoin in 2011, Namecoin was created to establish a decentralized DNS that would make internet censorship extremely difficult.
In October appeared another cryptocurrency called Litecoin, these two cryptocurrencies were the beginning of the history of the first altcoin being created.

yes you are right the first altcoin was created namely Namecoin in 2011. As long as Namecoin is traded it has never experienced a very high increase like other cryptocurrencies, Namecoin's highest price was $11.6 in 2013 and after that Namecoin never went higher. After Namecoin there is another altcoin that was created in the same year, namely Litecoin. The price of Litecoin is not the same as Namecoin because the price of Litecoin is more expensive compared to the price of Namecoin which is around $229.

Also, LD Jr. created Tonal Bitcoin (TBC) in January 2011 according to old forum posts.

That’s what I’ve found in wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptocurrencies#Before_2013 . I’ve looked through coins and found out that the chronology of "borning" of first alts is the next one:
-   Namecoin (decentralized domain name management, 2011)
-   Litecoin (first memory-hard mining, 2011)
-   Peercoin (first proof-of-stake mining, created at the end of 2012)
-   Ripple (first release in 2012)
-   Primecoin (launched on 7 July 2013 by anonymous hacker and Peercoin founder Sunny King
-   Gridcoin (created on October 16, 2013 by Rob Halförd.)
-   Gogecoin ( introduced by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a "joke" at the end of 2013, in December)

That list is not a fully comprehensive one as Tenebrix,Fairbrix,Geistgeld and Solidcoin all came out in 2011

I mined solidcoin back in the day before the DEV said he was re-branding it to Microcash (which never happened), one of the DEV's (coinhunter) is a fellow Australian who lived in Melbourne at the time.

I don't know too much about the history of cryptocurrencies just knowing that bitcoin is the first and at any time it will still be number one. However, some rumors that I get there are saying namecoin or litecoin is the first coin created. Or the first altcoin. Bitcoin may not be an alternative.
