Title: Will bitcoin ever get regulated
Post by: Tellek Garing on November 08, 2021, 07:08:11 PM
This topic have taken the center stage of my thought we have seen how countries around the world are gradually opening the economy to adopt bitcoin and as a result a lot of government policies are already underway to develop a framework that allow regulation of the bitcoin ecosystem which have made me to wonder on this topic. Can a decentralized currency like bitcoin ever get regulated?

No. Bitcoin is decentralized and censorship resistant. Only exchanges and centralized services will be regulated and this is not new.

Peoples in power never like this, and they never allow to be regulated because these culprits hate all decentralized things. Just because of this now they are tightening their grip on centralized exchanges with regulations and bringing KYC policy very stick.

Regulation isn't indissolubly linked to centralization. There'll probably be more laws introduced about bitcoin which will regulate it. For instance, they may make it disgustingly difficult to avoid KYC or illegal use bitcoin without reporting it.

In such scenario, it will be fully regulated, but still, there'll be incentivized miners. There will be updates if the community comes into an agreement. The currency wouldn't be controlled by entities (e.g., exchanges) or governments, but its usage would require government's approval.

To answer the question in the title, I don't believe it'll ever become so regulated that we'll miss its principles. And that's all I can say.

Can a decentralized currency like bitcoin ever get regulated?
No, or at least, not directly. The Bitcoin network is designed to be resistant to regulation or centralization. And as long as the protocol holds, it cannot be regulated.

Indirectly? Yes, Bitcoin can be regulated to some degree. While the network is decentralized, it can be operated through centralized channels which can serve as a means for the government to control it, the most common example of this is centralized exchanges. They give users the feeling of convenience and control, but actually take away the freedom and anonymity of its users.

Who holds the keys, owns the coins; and with centralized exchanges, they own the keys to the coins stored there and allow users access it based on their discretion.

Directly, bitcoin can't be regulated, yeah, I agree with you cause in case of fiat the government can even change the currency, print more or even withdraw from the circulation but in case of Bitcoin that's impossible to do. But... When the exchanges and bitcoin related services are regulated, this at some point means that bitcoin is regulated too but the influence and power is lower there compared to fiat. As time goes, more and more bitcoin exchanges are regulated and more often you have to submit KYC documents (including exchanges, crypto casinos and so on). Also, mining has turned into centralized business, there are just some giants that mine most of the coins + more and more transactions are easily traced as time goes. This only just means that bitcoin is getting more and more "regulated".

Regulated on the sense on where services would be adopted which do acts as a bridge between bitcoin transactions but talking literally to be regulated or controlled then its impossible.

When they do look upon about taxation then this is something possible because they could really target out those services/platforms  whom be dealing with crypto but not talking on direct ones.

Its good to see some adoption increasing but we dont actually need that on general sense.

and the answer is very clear, no and never will.
because indeed bitcoin will still be bitcoin and will not be able to change that.
Its decentralized nature will never disappear at any time and will not be managed by anyone.
they will still be bitcoin as they are today whether it's tomorrow, next week even until bitcoin is very expensive, everything will stay like this.

I think it depends on the context of regulation. As far as the blockchain itself goes, that's a straight flat NO. Can't reverse something that was purposely created to escape the same sick centralisation cycle.

On the other hand, any monetary value derived from possessing Bitcoin or using the system can be levied in one way or another.

Talking about Bitcoin itself, as what others mentioned above, hell no. You already mentioned "decentralized" there, buddy.
Using custodial wallets that allow people to receive and send Bitcoin? Yes, in fact KYC is a lot stricter on my own custodial wallet whenever someone is freshly registered.

In fact, Bitcoin is more transparent than Fiat Money. Bitcoin's transparent ledger makes it possible to trace all transactions easily. If the government wants to trace the wallet of a specific individual, they can do so without hindrance. Various coin mixing services and now under KYC and AML law, meaning the government can trace you if it wants even if you use mixing service. Technically it is censorship resistant but practically I don't know how effective is it.

You shouldn't expect something less from the government than a centralization method operation and they now want to support Bitcoin because they see that it is impossible for them to stop its existence. However, they can only regulate crypto exchange sites not Bitcoin and that will be also CEX exchange cause they cant regulate fully DEX exchange.

It will be regulated but not directly because only a 3rd party financial institution which is centralized can be regulated, when we see regulation, that means the essence of decentralization will not be completely enjoyed because once we use it through exchanges and other similar institutions, we have to comply with the basic requirement like the banks are imposing which is the KYC.

That's one big "only", because overwhelming majority of bitcoiners use those services. Without centralized exchanges Bitcoin wouldn't reach even close to the current price, and adoption would not be as high without convenient and safer buying and selling.

Government doesn't really care if some crypto geeks are sending each other $500 in BTC without KYC, as long as they control the large flows of money, they will consider it regulated enough.

We all know about this but as mentioned already many times authorities sitting in governments and having controlled things are not feel better with this way so just because of this trying to control indirectly they feel it's not possible to do this all directly. KYC is also just part of this all because they need all updates about peoples involved in this all.

Personally I am not worried about bitcoin regulation because government definitely will do it in one way or other. When we prepared to face any such kind of situation then I guess there will be no problem at all on having bitcoin regulations at any near future.

It is, has and will be regulated - there is no doubt about it. People who sit on cryptocurrency as a large investment inevitably cash it out as the price goes up in order to meet their living expenses or simply put it into other assets such as property. When you make that transaction and large sums of money suddenly appear in your bank account, you better be sure that your financial transactions and traceability are all in order because the tax man will come knocking very shortly. Banks receive the money and have to comply with local regulators along with anti-money laundering regulations which means you need to explain where that cash is coming from in most countries. It has only got stricter over time as governments see the vast amount of money that is slipping through their fingers and new taxes are often being introduced all around the world to target crypto and similar forms  of tradeable items.

Which government do you mean? maybe certain governments just want to adopt bitcoin but not necessarily they can control it, because it can't be an antonym for the government that has prioritized centralization. Two different and contradictory points of view cannot be combined, unless both are given a place according to their respective concepts, namely bitcoin with its decentralization and centralized government that accepts bitcoin's existence.

If the purpose is necessary and a must, I think it should be regulated but if not, then it must leave like that (decentralized) forever. I know that some merchants may have wanted to control it, they wanted assurance that they never lose because of the volatility of the market, and regulating it helps to have a less volatile. This can be good, it is not a problem but somehow, due to the greediness of many, that likely it becomes purely manipulated and that certainly has no difference then to fiat money in which crypto holders don't want it to happen, ever.

If the government can completely cease decentralized exchanges and most importantly the P2P means of exchanging. The effective tools of the governments are the centralized exchanges, centralized wallets and other centralized crypto service providers. For people that are privacy concerned and do not joke with privacy and anonymity, the governments will find it hard.

It's very difficult before you can see decentralized platform been regulated, which is obvious and understandable that bitcoin is decentralized currency, and it can't be manipulate or control in any means or factor, so therefore it's only centralized platforms own by government or individuals can be regulated as per say, using fiat currency as means of illustration, since each country have their own fiat and centralized platforms that form a committee that controls and deliberates on its value via economy, it's their right to regulate to any kind of their test or measure, so in bitcoin their is no organization that superhead the regulation of bitcoin. So in conclusion bitcoin can't be regulate.

It can be regulated through financial channels like exchanges, as you have noticed, the decentralized exchanges now are not as decentralized as before and they are not popular anymore. People trust a regulated market and that's the only way to see a growth of adoption on bitcoin. We were happy when El Salvador regulated bitcoin as we thought it will increase the price, so that's the hint to give us an idea of what would happen in the long run if more countries will adopt and regulated bitcoin.

So question is, can it help the crypto market, of course, yes because whether we like it or not, our government will always find a way to regulate any financial tools so they cannot be used for illegal transactions particularly in money laundering and most importantly they can monitor it.

Bitcoin cannot be regulated and no countries may be able to do this.
But, each country can make certain regulations related to Bitcoin. For example by making new rules when going to invest in Bitcoin or cryptocurrency, making some new taxes or higher taxes, banning Bitcoin, legalizing Bitcoin, and some others.
And some countries may also create some limitations in order that their citizens will not be involved again to Bitcoin, or reduce the involvement to Bitcoin such as making more strict regulations to the selling or trading of Bitcoin, exchanges, certain crypto platforms, and some others.

but with those, all limitations and regulations to the people, will it mean to regulate Bitcoin? No.
Because those people can still reach Bitcoin, can still be involved in Bitcoin, can trade or even invest in Bitcoin even with very difficult ways to get it.

As Bitcoin is fully decentralized by nature so it is not possible to regulate it. But we have to use broker or exchange to liquidate or trade our coin and most of the reputed exchange are centralized and required KYC documents to withdraw funds, that's why our Bitcoin can be regulated by the government or exchange.  Since we don't have the private key, hence we don't have any control over our funds in exchange.

Can a decentralized currency like bitcoin ever get regulated?
Technically, it can to an extent. And that will be by way of regulating CEXs it's traded on. But beyond that, no; it can't. Even without exchanges, Bitcoin can still be traded via wallets. The only reason people go through exchanges is because exchanges offer more options and numbers for trades. Minus that, Bitcoin trades can easily go on without exchanges. At the moment, that's the situation.

Regrettably however, I think at some point in future various governments will introduce more measures that are likely to strip Bitcoin of its privacy. You know, it's often a little to the right and a little to the left sort of thing with government.

If there's a law of regulation in your country on bitcoin and that is it's up to you if you will follow the law that can be you are regulated. But if not, you can do it too, because being regulated is our option but not directly on bitcoin, it's on exchange and wallet that we used, it's a 3rd party that implements regulation towards bitcoin users. But in fact, if you really become completely anonymous on bitcoin and yes, you can. So the answer is it will depend on us and the regulation will not hit directly on bitcoin.

in theory a decentralized currency such as bitcoin cannot be regulated because it is only based on supply and demand, besides that the creator of bitcoin is anonymous, so it is very difficult to regulate it. the government can only regulate platforms where bitcoins circulate such as crypto exchanges and crypto wallets by requiring taxes or other rules.

yes you can, if we look at history a hundred years ago things like gold, diamonds, iron, oil, were not fully regulated, there were no laws around the world about these things I mentioned, but with the passage of time they already have laws about these things. in the case of bitcoin it will also be regulated in each country a few years from now, this is unavoidable

Decentralized currencies like Bitcoin are difficult to regulate, so where are countries that prohibit the use of Bitcoin, some of its residents are still finding
ways to keep investing in Bitcoin. This means that the government cannot regulate Bitcoin as a whole, therefore most countries still limit the use of
Bitcoin, usually only allowed as a digital asset. Even in my country, the government is only able to regulate local exchanges that are used to trade Bitcoin
or some online wallets. Therefore, what the government of El Salvador did by legalizing Bitcoin as a legal tender was really very brave, because it is
not easy to regulate Bitcoin.

Title: Re: Will bitcoin ever get regulated
Post by: Kelvinid on November 08, 2021, 10:53:00 PM
Perhaps, it was started already in some places. Like those countries that legalized Bitcoin is something that has been applied but I believe it was for the good of everyone and to stop any illegal activities (fraud).

People will then think about losing their anonymity and that can be possible and besides, even using exchanges we've been losing it. To comply with KYC as we are worried about once it becomes regulated, that would be asked but why we should have not complied with it if we don't have any illegal intentions?

As it was started, that certainly be going to continue but I think, the volatile nature of the market remains.

This is a short and straightforward answer to the question of the OP. Bitcoin will always be decentralized but only the institutions or companies that are employing bitcoin can only be subjected to regulation from the government. So nope, bitcoin will never be regulated. The governments can get some information for btc holders owed to these exchanges or remittances which require KYC, but still, they won't get the full picture of the btc movements.

I think that governments will lead to the fact that in order for cryptocurrency exchanges, stores that support cryptocurrency payments services, etc. to exist in a given country, they will have to undergo regulation. There will be a free market in which we will be able to trade in cryptocurrencies beyond the eyes of the rulers, but it will probably be a much smaller market than we have now.

What the government can do is put some tight restrictions in the local exchanges to avoid illegal trade and to track suspicious huge amounts of bitcoins that being moved. They can only go as far as the exchanges but when the people decide to trade like P2P transactions, they can't do anything about it. It's hard for them to regulate it as if it's a centralized coin like XRP and others where they can easily track its founder.

The base line of bitcoin is decentralization and the government could not change that and what best they can do is to make regulations like accepting btc as legal tender as we have seen in case of El Salvador the first nation to accept Bitcoin as legal tender. The government will always put pressure on these central exchanges and will ask them to submit reports and various kinds of trouble but if you stored them on hardware wallets then no worries and till the time btc will be widely accepted as the change has begun. You cannot pass law to make Bitcoin as the central owned funds but who has the keys is the sole owner of funds.

It's not that hard, it's the government that's resisting it. Look at El Salvador, they adopted bitcoin and that's already a step towards regulation, the only thing that's keeping bitcoin from being regulated is the fact that the governments of different countries don't adopt them so no way they will make a good or fair regulation if they're against it right?

Crypto currency regulations are a ongoing process, because the Governments around the world are trying to curb it's freedom. The different legislative branches of governments are trying to find ways to stop anonymity and the free flow of Crypto currencies, without government oversight.

We know in the USA that the White House is considering a detailed executive order that will seek to tighten up oversight of encrypted digital assets. The Ransomware scandals and all the crimes that are linked with Crypto payments are now expediting this process.  >:( >:( >:(

This is of course possible, it actually exists in a number of countries, there are some countries that have started to regulate Bitcoin legislation and have started applying it on the ground, you cannot ignore any matter that exists by force on the ground, Bitcoin has become a reality on the ground although this is not likes governments, but they are forced to deal with this fact, so there must come a day when all governments will be forced to clarify regulatory legislation for Bitcoin, otherwise things will slip out of their hand.

Well, there would inevitably rules around the crypto scene that the higher-ups would put out just to ensure that they could at least exhibit some control I think. Ofc, at it's core, the concept of Bitcoin won't ever be controlled or changed, but there could be rules around it such as being used only for specific transactions and whatnot to limit what users could do with it. There's also the idea of linking identities to wallets, hence KYC's (which defeats the point of pseudo-anonymity imo, but it is what it is) and there'd probably be more that would be placed to regulate its usage to avoid scams and the like so that other people wouldn't exactly be afraid of using it.

Of course, bitcoin is a neutral decentralized protocol that works on a global scale, which means the decisions of a single government or regulations coming from even a powerful country cannot destroy or change the network. However, some regulations could have short-term negative consequences, especially if aimed at network participants directly.  For example, this is true for the mining industry because miners always depend on governments in providing access to electricity. If a particular government decides to cut mining facilities off electrical power, it can do that immediately. Whether they have an incentive to do that is another question, but they at least can get miners to pay additional taxes or blacklist unwanted transactions or whatever. Naturally, miners are always free to move to another more friendly place, but the number of such places is not indefinite and likely shrinking. Other regulations such as KYC/AML procedures, centralized exchanges, custodial wallets and other bullshit are less important because they scarcely affect the network itself.

Title: Re: Will bitcoin ever get regulated
Post by: davis196 on November 09, 2021, 06:37:14 AM
In theory,a country can regulate Bitcoin only if all BTC mining facilities get taken under the control by the government of that country. If the government(for example the US government) can control all the nodes of Bitcoin, then Bitcoin can be controlled by that country. However, this is just a theory and it can never happen in reality, because there's no point for a government to start mining a cryptocurrency. The governments have central banks and they can print their own money(or create their own CBDCs).
Bitcoin transactions cannot get regulated, because no centralized authority can decide which transaction should be approved and which one should be declined.

It's pretty hard to imagine these regulations, cause there is a technical problem here, It’s not possible to calculate your cryptocurrency tax liability without sophisticated software. Tracking the cost basis and days carried for the software needs a “deep understanding” of how blockchain works. Simply recording transactions in an Excel spreadsheet is not good enough for calculating tax liability (for cryptocurrencies).

The coin itself cannot be regulated as it is fully decentralized. But as the government starts to adopt bitcoin, more likely that all crypto related activities will be regulated soon, even if we know the fact that crypto is far better more compared to fiat as long as transparency is concerned. Bitcoin cannot be regulated, but its centralized exchanges will certainly be because they are fully controlled by the government and whatever crypto transactions that are made in those centralized exchanges will certainly be traced easily.

The question is, why would you want it to be regulated? I understand that balance is the key but when the government tries to step in and take taxes, it really gets annoying, honestly, governments are trying to make a way on regulating cryptocurrencies through the use of taking taxes through transaction fees, I find it really concerning as I wonder if Bitcoin continues to rise, so does the transaction fees.

It is possible for cryptocurrency to be regulated. Actually, in different countries cryptocurrencies are kind of being regulated already. Some platforms with cryptocurrency intended use are now regulated by their local government to monitor the activities such as deposit and withdrawal of assets to verify whether they are complying with the policies and to check if the users are not doing any illegal activities such as money laundering.

Here in our country, several crypto platforms are regulated by the central organization which means these platforms require undergoing KYC to verify the account. This is done for smooth transaction as well as for the app to be acknowledged and for its operations to be allowable and permissable. In addition, this is another source of tax for the government, in which the state would benefit and the citizens as well (if the funds are spent properly).

Because of the regulation, there are benefits that arise in both parties such as being more widely known and used platform and giving desirable transaction processes. There are also disadvantages such as giving your personal information (for those who aren't comfy with KYC) because some are afraid of identity theft. But it's totally normal. We have to compromise in order to have what we want. It's a balanced situation IMO. After all, regulation doesn't necessarily mean that the decentralized nature will be wiped out entirely. Part of the decentralized aspect would just be altered (such as the anonymity) but the nature of crypto will remain which cannot be controlled nor manipulated.

yep but not all countries can adopt it in my personal opinion since we have different views about crypto currency and for sure those who don't believe in such things will never change even in the future. wherein only those places that believing bitcoin has a value, like El savador and other big people who gradually accept bitcoin fo example .. Actually its not surprising bitcoin wil be regulated because many people believes that it's the future money . Let just stop assuming some will accept such decisions especially china because they're now have their very own digital asset. :D

in any case, there will be attempts to regulate from countries that accept bitcoin, but this will not be realistic, because it is not written on the blockchain whose transaction this or that transaction is, only if the person himself says that these are his bitcoins.

I think it could happen, but what is regulated is not decentralization, it is more inclined to regulations in its use. if it is regulated, I think bitcoin will lose its original nature, namely decentralization and the advantages that exist in bitcoin will disappear, with decentralization we will feel free to transact anywhere and faster and security is maintained

It would be difficult if not impossible if Bitcoin could be regulated by a person or institution in education. Bitcoin is very volatile so if it can be regulated and controlled by one person or an institution, this is a bad sign because the market is just as gripped. Maybe the value of the coin can have an effect. But don't be discouraged because it can be seen that until this moment Bitcoin's performance is better than before.

Precisely the number of wallets of bitcoin as well as the scope and anonymity are definitely the things that make the government capitulate in regulation, except for bitcoin, there are also many other wallets used by users, instead of inventorying all these huge numbers, it would probably be easier to regulate users, KYC is really a process in this scheme. Although not most governments require but exchanges prepare these documents in advance, partly for confidentiality, the rest is a timely addition to accommodate regulatory requirements that the government may issue based on the pace of bitcoin development.

No. Bitcoin is decentralized and censorship resistant. Only exchanges and centralized services will be regulated and this is not new.

That's the main point. Government and centralized bodies don't like decentralized crypto aka Bitcoin. If we talk about currencies like XRP, BnB and exchanges like Binance they are not decentralized cryptos rather centralized one. Governments have no issue in accepting the centralized cryptos that can be traced and taxed. I keep writing on such posts (since they pop up every other day) that governments all around the world have zero tolerance for decentralized P2P cash transfer.

Decentralisation means that it is spreaded between many people but if there are countries that have the majority of coins on their accounts, it will mean that bitcoin will partly lose its decentralisation. The main thing is that it will remain limited, so countries will not be able to release more and make it inflative like fiat money.

Do they want to move from a direct prohibition to the recognition of bitcoin as a means of payment? Not bad. This means that states may still be able to change their position on cryptocurrencies in the direction of mitigation.
As for the regulation of bitcoin, only the order and conditions of its circulation in society can be regulated by states. Internal regulation is beyond the powers of states.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder if cryptocurrency can ever get regulated in a real sense of it, because government regulations policy can only cover those services that are within their control so then what happens to decentralized services this will become the major issue in cryptocurrency regulation.

Bitcoin is a decentralized currency so definitely, it will never be regulated by the government and cannot be controlled or manipulated by any group or entity. But i believe all its crypto related activities and its centralized platforms and exchanges can be totally regulated by the government knowing they will take full control on it. So once crypto will be considered legal by the government, all its bitcoin transactions and other crypto related things will  now be traced by government's banks and all its legal financial institutions.

They might ignore Bitcoin before or might have no capability to adopt the system due to poor economic system but for now, with the spread of crypto adoption, they are finding a way to make it possible. But kinda be a huge challenge with them and it can be hard in a situation where the interest of the community isn't strong that certainly will just fail.

As far as the concern of their people, they needed more job opportunities and I think this should have given the first priority than pushing crypto adoption on their place coz that seems useless and hopeless.

I hope in my country there are no regulation for crypto because people will forced to pay tax about crypto and honestly i don't want it.  ;D

They could only regulate people or users on exchange accounts or any services or platforms that do offer or in relation with crypto but talking

it directly handling it out then its impossible and thats what government is trying to do but still failed even up to these years.

We dont need regulation actually but for some point on which we do need some full scale adoption then we would really be touching up
this part.

yeah, in the situation that gives us no chance but to seek support from the government which leads to strict rules and market regulation.
However, I don't think that we need to become wary seeing these changes, merchants and business owners are very confident when they know that the government is involved with this. But for us who are just normal investors and wanted to still become anonymous, that will become a problem.

The government will hinder the development of Bitcoin. The government wants to control people and will not give up control over financial resources.

Depending on what you mean by regulation, bitcoin shouldn't be and cannot be regulated because of the decentralization of bitcoin this cannot be managed, monitored, or watched by any government or organization so that's why even if a country tries to force people to do a legal transaction or even they take another step and try to ban bitcoin this would fail just like what happened to China. But still, any government can decide to announce bitcoin is legal and use it as a legal currency just like what happened to El Salvador. However, there are still many people against this theory.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrency have been legalized in some countries of the world. Some countries are trying to design a framework to legalize it. Some are thinking, How to legalize it.
The Bitcoin and cryptocurrency can be regulated in all countries after
(i) Strong KYC (Acceptable by all countries).
(ii) There will be only its legal use not illegal(rules and regulations should design to stop its illegal use)
(iii) Acceptable decentralized policy for all countries.

Bitcoin is operated by a non-government decentralized authority, which is the prime reason behind its transparency. All transactions through Bitcoin undergo massive computerized verifications. Anyone can access the public ledger where the Bitcoin balances are stored. IMHO, it will never be possible to regulate Bitcoin by any one centralised authority.

In fact, this has been started by some countries, their strict regulation makes even get stricter but it gives safety to their people. Why? because this makes stopped any act of fraudulent activities that involve crypto. As with the transparency it have, the easier for the authorities to track activities like this. That is why it has been ask to comply KYC verification, not just for taxes but for the safety benefits.

Not really that possible if we do talk directly which people should really realize that but in terms of regulating those services and platforms do get involved with crypto or bitcoin itself then it could be done but somehow we had already seen some countries had made out bitcoin on being a legal tender or currency which means that it could really be done but not really as that  rampant.

We dont actually need on being regulated on general sense of bitcoins existence but due to fiat transactions between crypto then it
couldnt really be somewhat able to avoid.

Bitcoin has been designed to be decentralised and it's being made for the main purpose of it, nothing can ever change it even If Satoshi has the ability to change it he'll never do it.
Now, If we're talking about regulating crypto currency, then I can say no government can regulate Bitcoin and other cryptos. That's why they put regulation and mandatory KYC verification for the crypto exchange and trading platforms. Though there were just a few who have full compliance, but I guess as time passes by all trusted exchange will follow suit.

Bitcoin comes fully with a decentralized system which means that no single government can regulate or manage bitcoin like paper currencies in general, they can only monitor and restrict bitcoin by regulating the exchange platform and it seems that the policy on regulation will be stricter as bitcoin's popularity increases.

I have also been having this same thought, and so far I don’t think that it would be possible for the government to be able to directly regulate bitcoin. The only thing that they have been doing is to regulate the centralized exchanges.

Centralized exchanges are like the tool for them to regulate cryptocurrency, and when you’re making use of exchanges like which are centralized, like Coinbase, they will be able to know what you’re doing with this cryptocurrency. And that’s because these exchanges will request info from you such as name, ID, photo, address, etc. And these information that are being gathered by these exchanges can be used by the government at anytime.

Short answer is yes.

Long answer involves a look at the way a country conducts its economic regulation, aka taxes. Theoretically, any government could make bitcoin virtually illegal by hiking up taxes on any transaction involving crypto, or any currency conversion involving crypto. Or, consider a wealth tax. You invest in BTC at 50k/coin, and BTC reaches an all time high of 100k/coin. Do you have an unrealized gain on the crypto of 100 percent? Yes, will the government come in and say that you now owe 20 percent, or more, to the tax collection agency? And if you do not have the liquidity to pay up, you must divest your coin.

Wealth taxes are already being considered, it worries more for the crypto world than it does for institutional investors that dump all their money into stocks. If the US or China tamper down crypto growth, it's not a good sign for everyone else.

They cant really touched crypto market without exchange platforms involvement or any other things that do involves crypto payments like businesses or something like that.Government could able to touch up crypto

directly if they wanted to then they had already done this a long time ago specially with Bitcoin which is already making some huge influence and popularity in the market today.

We are already experiencing that exchange platforms are becoming more strict because government do really requires them to do so.

Bitcoin is a decentralized coin whose number and circulation cannot be regulated as Bitcoin has a limited number of only around 21 million. Indeed, there are several countries that have adopted and legalized Bitcoin, but what the government can regulate is a tax for every transaction. The government cannot regulate the amount and price of Bitcoin itself because it is a decentralized Bitcoin whose price depends on supply and demand, this is what distinguishes Bitcoin from centralized fiat money.

For now Bitcoin will not be regulated by anyone because bitcoin is a decentralized crypto currency.
It may have been done by some countries to try to regulate Bitcoin but can't and they can only ban bitcoin in their country.
In my opinion, if in the future the entire supply of Bitcoin has been mined, then that is where all countries will create a program to regulate Bitcoin so that every transaction can be monitored and no more criminals will use Bitcoin.

Bitcoin will never be regulated because it's decentralized.

What can be regulated is the 3rd party entity or online wallets because they exist or operate to make a profit from transactions. Taxes exist because we do convert our bitcoin to traditional money, with that, we are required to pay taxes especially if we earn profit which we called as capital gain tax when paid to the government.

Regulation is happening already in countries where they accept bitcoin, but for countries who does not like bitcoin, they will just simply ban it and make it illegal for anyone who transact bitcoin in any form or purpose.

I don't think it will ever be regulated, because as we all know, the system is decentralized and it is difficult for the government to enforce the rules of ownership.
however bitcoins can be regulated through financial channels such as existing exchanges and, as you may have noticed, decentralized exchanges are now not as decentralized as they were before.
The point is that bitcoin will not be regulated by anyone because bitcoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency

bitcoin can not be regulated, that's the reason many governments reject the existence of bitcoin,
However, the government can pressure the exchanges where they are sheltered by implementing KYC if they are going to make financial transactions with the central bank.

Maybe cryptos will regulate in future. Regulation could be a kind of KYC system through a government mediated wallet or maybe the exchanges will be regulated by a government body. Some are believe crypto can't to be stopped but it has to be regulated and they think regulations are good. When regulated risk issues of crypto is reduced, institutional investors are enter the crypto world, could get trade license and start a crypto related businesses so many people believe regulation is good for investors. Almost all countries welcoming crypto and every country accepts the facts that block chain technology is future. Every technology have both advantages and disadvantages so it should be regulated and govt will bring some actions to regulate it.

I think that by nature Bitcoin should never be regulated, Bitcoin should not remain under rules to be used by people, that is the main legacy that Satoshi left us, neither governments nor third parties should regulate them, what happens is that in the type of society that we live where they fud Bitcoin everywhere, saying that it is a volatile and high risk asset, as long as people continue to faithfully believe in the news and in economists where they do not give btc cavities those things will continue to happen, and for the majority of people the traditional economy is the most reliable where there is security and control, that includes complete identity, that is, zero anonymity, for many that is the right thing to do.

I don’t think so. In fact, bitcoin not being regulated is a major reason why people invest and trade it. I don’t see any chances of bitcoin getting regulated any time soon.
Investing in bitcoin is fine and it would be regulated because, in a country where dislikes bitcoin, they can implement a set of rules that will prohibit their people in investing in bitcoin. But that country alone cannot regulate the bitcoin network, they're just good at giving instruction on what people must not take but they cannot wholly stop the network that completely operates bitcoin. We're going to the point that each country that sees the possibilities of bitcoin will just accept it and regulate it all at once. Because if they ban bitcoin, it's not a good decision.

Since Bitcoin is a decentralised currency, nobody can regulate it. However, it's access can be regulated to an extent by various governments to avoid frauds and its illegal use. For example, governments can introduce tough KYC approvals and bring strict policies related to cryptocurrencies, to regulate it indirectly.

Since we don't have the private key, hence we don't have any control over our funds in exchange.

every day we are moving towards centralization, to buy bitcoin using Fiat we use banks (banks are centralized) and then we use exchanges (exchanges are centralized) and then we trade in centralized exchanges or use in centralized casinos or buy something in store centralized online. it was inevitable that bitcoin in the end would be surrounded by centralization

Bitcoin itself can't regulated because it is decentralized. Mostly regulation is focused on centralized exchange which something that they can control. But i think don't need to worry because as long it not made bad impact for users, people wouldn't care about it, especially a lot of DEX already launched.

Regulation of bitcoin is really a tough task. Different countries have planned and have formed teams to analyse and execute the regulation of cryptocurrencies. The usage of bitcoin around the globe have increased with time. This pressure up the governments around the globe to speed up regulating bitcoin.

Few countries have added bitcoin along with the gold, and has planned to tax bitcoin based on the transactions. For this the government need the database from the cryptocurrency exchanges. If this happens automatically users will move and look for other loop holes to skip taxation. This makes regulation of cryptocurrencies hard to implement.

Bitcoin's velocity that decreases will cause our interest rates to seriously degrade, incorporate more price controls as well as increased costs in some exchanges and merge into centralized exchanges managed by the government, this framework is not legalizing bitcoin, this framework is becoming a crushing and drying machine for the people who work here. However, the regulation of bitcoin was never conceived as bitcoin had its own separation of rules and anonymization of so many things, all help it become an impregnable fortress and have not been afraid of the fire and power of the government

I don't think government could regulate this. Bitcoin is a decentralized program. There's miner's are still here so it's impossible to own all of bitcoin and manipulate this.

Just think about it when government will be aware of this currency and start to adopt this peoples will also aware of this. There was a tweet in past I've seen that If every millionaire started to buy bitcoin then they won't be able to buy a bitcoin.

If you are aware of that government are starting to manipulate you will you support that government for next year ?

Overall I think it's not possible

Usually when a system has involved more people it will be more complicated and complex, that's where regulation is needed to break that complexity.

Over the years we've seen multiple countries express hostility towards Bitcoin and have also issued/imposed sanctions and regulations over the network in their country, the thing is, this countries are constantly irked that they can't control the Bitcoin network just as they do with their fiat currency, and again, they do not want their citizens to experience the freedom of funds and control that Bitcoin offers its users, they want them to only use fiat and cbdc's that's controlled by them.

Having said that, there is definitely a limit to their level of regulation, they can't control the network, they can only make it somewhat difficult for their citizens to purchase or use Bitcoin, but the network will always be away from the reach of the government.

On the off chance that the government need to follow the wallet of a particular person, they can do so without prevention. Also If govrnment legalize it at that point it'll be advantageous for government to produce income from the exchanges and keep up solid Kyc that follow the exchanges.

Bitcon is decentralized which means government cant regulate it, I believe because government believe they can't control bitcoin that's why they are finding it difficult to adopt it because they believe it can't be controlled by them not like the normal fiat which we know they are do anything they like at any moment for example government of a country can decide to print more money at any moment but bitcoin is not like that we are having only 21million bitcon and after all bitcoin have been mined then no more new bitcoin will be created.

We dont need regulation but rather acceptance but theres no way we coul avoid such scenario because government would really make involvement no matter what and they dont really like to get behind and on things which cant really be controlled. Regulation is something that cant really be avoided
and speaking with those platforms then they cant avoid such thing but regulating technically couldnt really be possible on Bitcoin.
We dont actually need that but  there are things which cant really get rid of.

Not only government cannot regulate it, but any institution or individual cannot control it as well. Bitcoin is purely decentralized, it is the advantage of Bitcoin. As far as I know, there is no way to regulate Bitcoin, Satoshi made it with a perfect plan.

How to regulate Bitcoin?

But regulate bitcoin? This is hard as it is decentralized. They may regulate it at a certain level, but they can't get the whole picture of it. So if they just want to get some share from crypto businesses they can. But to have full control, I don't think so.

No. Bitcoin is decentralized and censorship resistant. Only exchanges and centralized services will be regulated and this is not new.
agree. government just regulated exchanger and the other service that relate with cryptocurrent.
maybe, in some country, they make new crypto current than they regulated it as much as they can. what make people attract maybe just available bonus, then back to primary coin.
in my place crypto is bad thing, but there is a big party make new currency based on crypto.

If bitcoin users become more massive then all countries will immediately implement regulations, I'm sure there is no reason for any country to stop and refuse bitcoin so giving permission is a better thing. the presence of regulations can certainly reduce project fraud that is increasingly massive.

Bitcoin is a decentralized asset and a randomized system making it difficult for anyone to manipulate. the government can only regulate and supervise crypto whether the crypto is using the wrong system so that it can result in the loss of others while bitcoin itself cannot be regulated by any government.

Governments could ban the use of bitcoin even if they can’t take over the system at the technological level. People could keep using bitcoin in that scenario, of course, but it would be like dealing drugs. Most people don’t want to deal drugs even if it’s profitable because the consequences of being caught outweigh the profit for most. That said, I’m a bitcoin speculator. I believe in it’s medium-term growth and, potentially, long-term success if it’s not banned or heavily constrained by regulations. But I prefer to speculate instead of holding because of this potential ban/regulation that could destroy bitcoin’s price overnight.

Nope and this will definitely destroy the purpose on why cryptocurrencies are created in the first place.

The reason on why Satoshi Nakamoto created bitcoin is because he wanted to have a currency which is decentralized (no regulation from any third parties) in which anyone can transact along the blockchain. Since this removes completely any third parties from accessing or recognizing your transactions, miners are the ones who are responsible for validating your transactions as you use your BTCs.

Again if BTC were to be regulated, this will be no less than fiat- meaning governments or third parties would be able to regulate its transactions, which ultimately contradicts on why BTCs were created in the first place.

That only they can touch people who use Bitcoin but not the system. It remains uncontrollable, unregulated, and it remains decentralized as it was to be from the very beginning. The only thing that the government is going to do is to impose taxes for all the users, nothing else. But somehow, it was still in their struggles since not all will able to pay it and the people remain anonymous which becomes their burden. That is why they hated Bitcoin, they don't like how the people could even lie with them. And this is to see the market price remains unpredictable as it freely moves in different directions.

I don't see any reason to make it regulate either in the future as it's decentralized and can not be controllable, so it's a high possibility that the government never wants bitcoin or any cryptocurrencies to become regulated. The most significant fact is mining, and usage of mining has become common, and as everybody wants free money, they'll start earning bitcoin through mining. I believe it makes people lazy and they'll work at home instead of going outside.

Regulation is hard for a decentralized currency. But if the government just want to get a hold of some of its crypto users, they are already doing it by regulating the local crypto exchanges. Because most local crypto exchanges are under the jurisdiction of the local Central Bank. So in some way, they have the picture of what's going on in their crypto community. But of course, it is not the absolute picture because some users will use p2p and other independent platforms. So it is like partially regulated but I doubt they can have a full grasp of the crypto movements. Because they can't. This is why the governments are hesitant towards crypto. They have no way of fully controlling its existence.

No. Bitcoin cannot be regulated by some government bodies anytime soon, otherwise it's unique feature is taken away from it. Bitcoin as a digital currency, now being tagged to be an asset or store of value is already something the government are interested in so as they can have their lead on it and know everything going through it. For now, there are lots of countries working towards the regulation of Bitcoin, while some are taking the action of banning Bitcoin use, this will be, but the future will tell, if the regulation will suit the interest of the people and be accepted or be against the interest of the people and be reject. To an extent, this will be a big fight in the future, there will always be a winner, with some serious injuries.

The government is a bit more powerful than you can imagine, I have to say. Decentralised or not, if the governments of the planet went full-on China dictatorship mode, we would find it very hard to find value in Bitcoin, as the governments would find a way to make it impossible to buy or sell anything with it, legally. And they would make miners illegal and that would scare people off too.

But i think once it will adopted globally and act as an alternative to fiat, maybe by that time the government will be able to regulate it slowly. For now, as long as its fully decentralized and not yet fully backed by the government, it remains to be unregulated.

Peoples in power never like this, and they never allow to be regulated because these culprits hate all decentralized things. Just because of this now they are tightening their grip on centralized exchanges with regulations and bringing KYC policy very stick.

They could regulated only on platforms/services which do involves with crypto and not directly technically with it because it cant really be possible as we do all know.

We've seen several countries now are  making it as a legal tender which is great but it would still takes time about this adoption to move further and i dont really believe that it could
replace fiat soon but rather be always staying up as an alternative.

People shouldnt really think off about this way because it wont really happen no matter what.

Well despite the fact that many countries are begging to adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender, the fact still remains that Bitcoincan never get regulated as no one have the power to do so not even the FED their can only adopt Bitcoinas a secondary currency to tap into the many advantages of bitcoin ecosystem

If Bitcoin can be regulated, it means that it is not decentralized, then however the government tries to regulate Bitcoin it is impossible. The reason
why many people trust Bitcoin, is because it is different from fiat which can be regulated by the government. Because the government is having
a hard time regulating Bitcoin, therefore the majority of countries in the world are neutral by banning Bitcoin as a payment and only allowing it
to be used as a digital asset. So not many countries will legalize Bitcoin as a legal tender, but with time, many countries will begin to follow
in El Salvador's footsteps legalizing Bitcoin as a legal tender. Because in the end the government will realize Bitcoin will not replace fiat, but will
only be an alternative. It's actually very good if fiat and Bitcoin can co-exist and complement each other.

They regulate it through some means by having 3rd party apps that allows their people to hold cryptos, while at the same time requiring them to comply with KYC policies which would require an ID from their people before having the means to sell them or even buy services with the use of it. This is at least from my experience, though it doesn't literally "regulate" crypto like controlling the whole blockchain itself as that is a complete BS to happen.

Hello BTT family,
What if bitcoin was legal in India?
When there is talk of cryptocurrency, how bitcoin can be excluded from the discussion. Right? As bitcoin has shown the entire world of investment that cryptocurrency can give high value return on investment. The highest ROI given by bitcoin in last 10 years than anyother project.
So if bitcoin becomes legal in India it could benefit everyone in the country like firstly the government. Government can make it legal or regularise so that it can earn from the tax which can help in economic growth and development of the country. Moreover India which in last 6 years has encouraged online transactions through UPI payments want to make aware of online transactions and which has been a great success. As government encourages online transactions next could be cryptocurrency. As I think so let's see. What you think about it?
Secondly India which has so much potential young youths in every field and sees opportunities in new sectors for growth. Bitcoin launching could provide a great opportunity for these young youths for there personal and financial growths.
Third is mining of bitcoin on a large scale should be encouraged with the help of renewable energy sources like wind, solar, hydro. This type of mining could increase in rise of new mining companies and which in return would provide good job opportunities.
This type of mining could control pollution also thus not harming our environment and this is good news for every one
So more jobs, new online transactions in form of cryptocurrency/ bitcoin, new companies, less pollution. Isn't this futuristic?
That's why I believe Bitcoin/cryptocurrency is future of our world.
Indian government do it fast don't be late on this.
Thanks guys for reading my views.
Was it good? I'm open to feedbacks  and discussion.

The government cannot regulate the market price of bitcoin, although it can legalize bitcoin as a legal currency. bitcoin can be the digital currency of the whole world and not some countries, so countries can use bitcoin as a medium of exchange only, but cannot control bitcoin.

By looking at how long bitcoin has been around, it's been 11 years in the world but a superpower like America can't regulate it. I don't think bitcoin can be regulated by anyone. Its decentralized nature makes investors confident. If it can be regulated by several countries, I'm sure investors will doubt its honesty, I'm afraid the market will be manipulated by people with an interest.

Well I can't refer to whales as regulators because they don't have direct control over the market and the whale can only influence the market for just a single time and if he is out of Bitcoin the power is gone but a regulator is a policymaker that makes a law that determines the direction the market will go so whale are just big bag holders.

In fact, you yourself answered your own question about the possible regulation of bitcoins and other decentralized cryptocurrencies. The legalization of cryptocurrency by the state without fail includes determining the legal status of cryptocurrency in the state, the conditions and procedure for its circulation on the territory of the state, and the procedure for possible taxation. If the order and conditions of circulation of cryptocurrency is its regulation, then such regulation will be in any case in every country. In this case, we do not say that the state will make changes to the cryptocurrency software, this is impossible to do.

Under the regulation criteria of all the governments of the world, I think they could make them regulate it, however I think that those regulations will be skipped by people to not comply with them, nobody likes to leave their money to the government, however they are currently creating Laws in some countries for the adoption of BTC and cryptocurrencies, in the case of countries like Venezuela that has a totally fragmented economy and without a solution, BTC circulates normally, but the only regulation that exists is in BTC mining, since They have to register with the SUNACRIP body which is mandated by the government.

No. Bitcoin is decentralized and censorship resistant. Only exchanges and centralized services will be regulated and this is not new.

This issue is as old as hills. There is dire need of understanding among BTC community that its a decentralized financial system developed to remain free from manipulation and censorship. Centralized crypto and exchanges join the crypto much later just to have bigger piece of the cake. I dont consider coins  like XRP, BnB part of crypto ecosystem.

Well it is a respectable opinion, obviously these coins that you name are just a few more, the one that matters most is BTC, if we take into account the possible regulation of cryptoactives, the governments will take into account those coins that you name, plus the possible tokens that They will also be used by the governments to extract the maximum possible tax, so part of all this, although the other currencies are not as relevant compared to BTC, belong to the same technology and in different networks, but they have a different approach.

I don't think it will ever be possible, because of the decentralized nature of btc, and this has become the initial provision of its ownership, but if the exchange can be regulated by the government at least an exchange that will operate in a certain country must follow the laws in force in that country regarding existing finances

Whenever bitcoin ever gets regulated it will lose its original nature and that will affect its performance greatly that is why Satoshi makes sure to make the bitcoin network highly decentralized and uncontrollable by any individual or group left alone by the government.
Bitcoin can never get regulated but the government can rather adopt Bitcoin just like in the case of El Salvador

Talking technically then there's no way that it could be regulated and this is the main reason on why most governments do really hate it and doesnt tend to adopt
or simply wont fit out on their likings which it isnt surprising knowing that government do really loves on controlling everything thats why they do  really put up
their focus on platforms which do deal with crypto on where they do set out regulations and to those people who do uses will simply abide with the laws
that had been put in. Any choices? None but if you are a long term holder then it wont really be much an issue.

Those who said no are wrong. Now technically you can always buy and sell OTC ( Over The Counter) which can be done completely unregulated but if all governments were to ban bitcoin that would mean they’d not allow for exchanges to be operational in their countries and that would ruin bitcoin. The government can only manage its external relations. That is the relationship between the government and crypto actors. They will never be able to control the flow from the transacation of their blockchain. So they could have set the tax, although it could have been ineffective because they had to work with the exchange to be able to withdraw taxes according to the rules. Or they give the rule as an income tax and are obliged to report income. But I would prefer that than the government to freeze all activities related to crypto.

I think that the only way it can be regulated is when a town allows it and even so, if you want to be irreverent you can be, because a government cannot manage 100% control of a town that trades with BTC, there are many ways to bypass prohibitions, there are many VPNs and there are many computer tools that still allow privacy and anonymity in some operations, the most reckless go directly into the deep web where there are exchanges that make their transactions totally almost imperceptible, and although it is very delicate , some choose to do so, yet there are many ways to evade a government that wants to regulate BTC.

You are contradicting yourself. You are saying bitcoin is decentralized and it can never be regulated by the government. But then you are saying bitcoin can be traced by government and regulated. Yes, bitcoin is decentralized but can be regulated. There are already some countries that have imposed strong policies and regulations on crypto currencies. Now whether people will abide by the regulation or not depends on them. As long as they don't have any interaction with fiat currencies, the government can't do anything because all those regulation involves fiat currencies. If you are making a p2p transaction with someone else using only bitcoin,  the government won't know anything (unless your address is somehow associated with your identity or you have declared your assets officially). In other words you will be hiding your coins from the government and do everything illegally.

The truth is bitcoin can be regulated by most countries in the world but cannot be controlled by any central authority. The rules I mean are compliance with applicable laws in a country such as the prohibition of using bitcoin as a legal currency or means of payment. You have to comply, but the government cannot control bitcoin but can only control its users.

If you are making a p2p transaction with someone else using only bitcoin,  the government won't know anything (unless your address is somehow associated with your identity or you have declared your assets officially). Regulation and control are never the same, You have explained it. So it is true that P2P transactions will provide better privacy for bitcoin users regardless of whether a ban has been imposed in a country.

Adding it up to what you had mentioned, using custodial wallets that are widely recognized by your country would require you to comply to their KYC requirements especially that they knew that cryptos aren't purely traceable with ownership and only by addresses.
Here in my country, KYC policy is quite strict when it comes to those. It's like Binance that has various levels of verification (email -> POI -> address).

These days cryptocurrencies have turned to be the preferred one for money laundering. This is all because of its anonymity, cross border transaction, easy access and it continues. Same as the growth, there is also increase in the number of cybercrime related with cryptocurrency.

Based on the data provided by chainalysis there is a 30% up in the money laundered than the year 2020. Likewise there is more tax revenue loss happening for the government and this makes governments to push regulation than just leaving it without any policies for cryptocurrency.

Some countries are exploring to regulate the use of cryptocurrency in the form of personal accounts and wallets. Moreover, some countries are even exploring to ban cryptocurrency all together.

But as far as bitcoin is concerned, there is no real regulation on cryptocurrency. This is because it is an entirely digital currency which is based on blockchain technology and is totally decentralised. Hence, it cannot be governed by a central bank or any other financial agency.

In this case, as we all know, "regulating' merely means excessive taxes on anyone who decides to hold/trade Bitcoin. We all knew it was coming.

in my opinion, this is the only cryptocurrency that will be difficult to regulate, decentralization and anonymity are just about bitcoin, because no one knows the creator, the blockchain also works by itself, unless the owner of the bitcoin wallet himself will not give the private key to the regulator and tell his identity, then it is impossible to regulate it.

Anyway, I hope we don't learn the hard way, however, the most likely to happen is to have them taxed, most exchanges would be blacklisted, thus, any financial movement would trigger alarm bells, forcing you to declare any earnings that are a result of dealing with cryptocurrencies.

Yes, it can get regulated. Well, not regulated in the sense that today's lawmakers and authorities would like, but more like a middle ground between total regulation and total decentralization. Especially if we want to see BTC stabilization in the future, some sacrifices need to be made. So, in short, if we want a long-lasting BTC, something needs to give, investors will need to be protected, and some regulation needs to implement. The issue that arises is can it be implemented globally because a country-by-country regulation would not help.

That's not largely the case. The vast majority of money laundering activities take place on Fiat, not crypto. After all, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum have transparent blockchain ledgers. This means it's easy enough for authorities to catch malicious actors on-chain. Why would a criminal use a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin for money laundering when he can simply use cold, hard cash? Privacy coins have a better chance for being used for such nefarious activities, but the wild fluctuations in market price, greatly defeats the purpose. I'd say the crypto market is somewhat-regulated, as governments have been able to successfully enforce KYC/AML measures on centralized exchanges. Things like decentralized exchanges and atomic swaps are out of their control, but almost nobody use these alternatives because of their low liquidity and higher learning curve. I'd prefer Bitcoin to be mildly regulated as too much regulation will stop its growth for good. Who knows what tactics mainstream governments will come up with depending on crypto/Blockchain tech's progress over time? Just my thoughts ;D

Bitcoin is decentralized so no one can easily control it even if bitcoin becomes a law in the whole world it will take a long time to control like fiat. Bitcoin is the currency of an online currency system this currency system is also called cryptocurrency it cannot be seen or touched it is created online and used online digitally. Bitcoin is completely controlled by us it is not controlled by any organization or individual with no government control investors can safely use bitcoin.

Regulation is not literally on bitcoin itself because by nature bitcoin cannot be controlled since it uses a decentralized system. What we are talking here is about the regularization of a certain country to impose the rules to the 3rd party like an exchange to adopt with the standard rules and regulation, particularly on the KYC and Anti Money Laundering law.

To a certain degree it will be regulated but I don't think that it will be fully regulated, more likely that people are the one's that would get regulated rather than bitcoin itself. And decentralization would lose it's meaning when bitcoin gets regulated anyways so it's highly unlikely that regulation would be met with no opposition if it ever happens.

There are two things which i think will likely to happen.

1- Bitcoin will get regulated but it may take more time then we may anticipate. There are lot of challeenges which will be faced in regulating bitcoin and making all the governments agree on it.

2- Bitcoin will co-exist with fiat. Government may introduce their own digitial coins but i dont see fiat getting completely eliminated. Fiat may be converted from paper money to government owned digitial coins.

In the future it is very possible that all crypto exchanges must comply with regulations issued by the government and must pass KYC for every user who wants to transact in it and until now if we see the government continues to demand that crypto exchanges must comply, then indirectly this will certainly create bitcoin anonymity fade.

Therefore, there are still many countries that are neutral towards Bitcoin, because Bitcoin is very difficult to regulate. Until now the regulation is not
for Bitcoin, but the exchanges used for Bitcoin trading are usually regulated by the government. Even countries that declare Bitcoin illegal, but residents of
that country can still own Bitcoin and can make Bitcoin transactions. This is proof that it is very difficult for the government to regulate Bitcoin, that is
why many governments are afraid to legalize Bitcoin. Whereas if the government is open-minded and studies Bitcoin properly, there is nothing to be
afraid of by legalizing Bitcoin. Because Bitcoin was created for an alternative payment, and not to replace fiat.

Hasn't bitcoin been successfully co-existing with government-issued money for more than a decade already? People have long recognized bitcoin as a savings technology, but when it comes to daily transactions, they tend to spend fiat money first because they know fiat is not suitable for storing wealth. Fiat is for spending, bitcoin is for unpredictable future spending. This system of double money has worked for years, and would still have been working very efficiently today if governments hadn't decided to intervene in it and mess things up by their questionable attempts to regulate matters that either cannot be regulated at all or cannot be regulated without first destroying the principles on which bitcoin is standing. It is widely known that bitcoin is open, borderless, censorship-free, unstoppable money which people value for its decentralized nature. Any regulations of fiat system, if successfully applied, will make bitcoin less valuable and less attractive as a savings technology, that is, it will make bitcoin worthless and the co-existence with fiat impossible.

Support on this , because the larger Bitcoin reaches is the more this will be complicated for each country to handle so what they will implement is Regulation so at least they will have some control or power over crypto .

Not unless the world will rely in crypto as currency then regulation might be off the table and only some rules will be implemented .

in my opinion, this is the only cryptocurrency that will be difficult to regulate, decentralization and anonymity are just about bitcoin, because no one knows the creator, the blockchain also works by itself, unless the owner of the bitcoin wallet himself will not give the private key to the regulator and tell his identity, then it is impossible to regulate it.

Well,,, did they government not decide a few years ago that both Bitcoin and Ethereum were "decentralized" enough to not require regulation? Decentralization is also applicable to Ethereum, just not to the same level of Bitcoin.

Also,,, I do not think Bitcoin ever was anonymous, it was always private, but never anonymous.

No because there are still some country who don't still believe on bitcoin than to see bitcoin as a scam decentralized currency that have few years to stand in the community. Even some countries that adopted bitcoin are still looking for ways to involve taxes on their citizens which will be difficult for them to impose such taxes to bitcoin users.
It will be difficult for bitcoin to be regulated because many people are used to centralized currency which they don't believe any other decentralized currency. Those that don't have knowledge about bitcoin in the societies will not be happy about such plan or opinion.

Except Bitcoin becomes centralized, it can not be regulated.
They're still countries who are yet to understand what Bitcoin is and it's mode of operation, the still believe Bitcoin to be Ponzi

The government can not regulate what it doesn't have believe or faith in.

Can a decentralized currency like bitcoin ever get regulated?

Yes, in some jurisdictions like China bitcoin can be banned, but in the U.S. and other freer countries we are likely going to see an emphasis on compliance and restrictions on how companies can behave in relation to bitcoin. While bitcoin can never be completely banned in practice, we will likely see more oversight of exchanges and financial institutions to make sure investors are paying taxes, money is not laundered, and that investors get adequate protection.

As long as regulation is done intelligently, it will be beneficial for the industry.

It depends on what you see as regulating Bitcoin. Can the Government determine how miners mine Bitcoin? how many Bitcoins are sent to exchange by miners? the price at which Bitcoin is sold? I don't think all these are possible however, I do believe that regulation will mostly be on the exchanges in reporting suspicious Bitcoin transactions and putting other measures in place like AML/KYCs

China may have "banned" Bitcoin, but people can still access it through other means. What the Chinese government has done is restrict exchanges and people from conducting business with Bitcoin. But they cannot stop the network itself due to its decentralized nature. I guess other countries will take advantage of Bitcoin's rise for taxation purposes. Anything that would benefit mainstream governments will get their approval. While some governments say Bitcoin is used for money laundering and tax evasion (in order to justify their means), others say all of the contrary.

I don't think every single country will ban Bitcoin because it's impossible to reach a common agreement between them. Regulations are a must to legitimize the crypto/Blockchain industry. But too much regulations will stifle its growth. Everything will depend on the collaboration of individuals and governments alike. As long as everything's done correctly, Bitcoin will continue to grow like there's no tomorrow. Just my opinion :)

The pressure of people will be enough for the government to take this step in the best interest of the public and the country.

That's bitcoin's external rule, but the network system won't be able to regulate it. Countries do that because they are worried about the negative impact. Even world institutions like the IMF will not be able to set up a blockchain network.
Just look at Elsalvador they dare to legalize bitcoin, despite interference from the IMF. The legalization of bitcoin is the right of every country, which has its own. So it is quite possible to set Bitcoin on its users rather than on the network or internal of Bitcoin technology.

Bitcoin's decentralized nature makes it hard for it to be regulated in many cases but for sure so many Bitcoin services are being regulated daily, such services as exchange and Bitcoin payments gateways can easily get regulatory attention. But Bitcoin itself is very difficult to be regulated at the moment unless future development counters that aspect of its decentralization.

Yes, but there is a limit to the extent at which it can be regulated. That it is legal in in a country doesn’t mean that the government can fully regulate it. The regulation is still going to be limited. In a country where it is legal means that people are free to make use of it and there wouldn’t be any punishment for making use of it. There are also countries that are neutral on Bitcoin.

In a country where it is legal the government only had control over the centralized exchanges , but they don’t have control over exchanges that are decentralized and some people can decide to make use of DEX and the government wouldn’t know about them and their activities.

I am not sure, maybe in the future the government might figure out a way for them to be able to regulate Bitcoin, although I still think that would be impossible because of the way that Bitcoin was set up. But the government are steady doing research and digging into Bitcoin, so we just don’t know  what might happen in the future. Left for me I would say that it is better that Bitcoin stays the way it is, because it wouldn’t cool as it is now if the government should start regulating it.

Bitcoin was created to be something that is not in control of anyone. Although I know that some people would give excuses that it would be used for the wrong purposes for the fact that it is not controlled, but that’s not mostly true, because Bitcoin can be traced.

Bitcoin is far from being regulated as the digital currency is built on a decentralized network, but if you talk about it services such as exchange and other Bitcoin service providers yes there can be regulated as we already have some centralized exchanges e.g Binance.

One good example also are local crypto-exchanges. Because they are under the jurisdiction of their Central Bank. So in a way, they are abiding the laws and regulations of their Central Bank when it comes to crypto business. But bitcoin itself, won't be regulated because of its decentralized nature. Only the businesses employing bitcoin or other crypto services. If the government can get taxes out of these businesses, why not? Rather than treating them as illegal market because they won't get anything, only their underground market will benefit from it.

In my opinion, BItcoin cannot be regulated at any time by arbitrary people. Maybe Bitcoin can only be regulated by the creator himself who has the code. If Bitcoin can be regulated arbitrarily, I am not sure the value of Bitcoin will be as high as it is now, in fact its value will decrease. This can happen. The thing behind Bitcoin still a mystery or a secret it seems, we only know what lies ahead now. Compete in the race to have Bitcoin from mining, trading and so on. In fact, many people commit fraud, theft or other crimes to get BItcoin more easily without mining or buying it.

The need to have a license as a business for their operation is already enough to be said that they're regulated and controlled by the government. What you said about bitcoin and the others, they can't really be regulated at all.

That's why exchanges are asking for KYC.

That's part of the regulation so if you enter their platforms, you're using a regulated platform but outside of it, they have no control over us.

Exactly. At its core, it would be impossible to regulate Bitcoin because of its decentralized and censorship-resistant nature. What governments can only do is regulate businesses and exchange operators dealing with cryptocurrency. Centralized exchanges are required by law to comply with KYC/AML regulations in order to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. If they don't do that, governments will close up their business. It's the way it works.

For Bitcoin to achieve its true potential, it needs to be traded on decentralized exchanges. Fortunately, there are some DEXs and even atomic swaps which allow people to gain access to the world of crypto without limitations. These alternatives cannot be regulated because of their decentralized nature just like Bitcoin. Depending on how crypto develops over time, governments can either decide to ban Bitcoin completely or continue to regulate the industry. Either way, Bitcoin will survive as it's too big to fail. Who knows how our future will look like with Bitcoin as the epicenter of our mainstream economy? Just my thoughts ;D

which can be well regulated by the government as the exchange platform in the country. I think the government can tie taxes on the platform. while asset ownership will be very difficult to regulate by the government.
so the ownership tax by each person will be charged when there is a withdrawal from the exchange platform. I don't think crypto-assets can be regulated and set as income tax.

It is that these countries the BTC must enter at any rate, it is not possible that a third world country has advanced so much to Europe and North America, it does not matter that the price of BTC is low, which represents having in the economy to BTC is shielding against inflation, if we take into account that all economies are vulnerable, including the United States and the European, BTC sometimes represents being its best outlet, even above gold, gold will always represent the best support, while BTC represents to be the best investment of all.

Even though there is a regulation of the wallets or any platform that the users use but still we can still be able to use BTC without knowing by the government, the whole thing they can able to regulate because we can use BTC without regulations. But the problem is when we buy and sell cryptocurrencies we need a centralized exchange to that faster. However, there are exchanges that we can use to trade but I am not sure how faster it is. This is a question many people have and yes it is important. More countries are legalizing it because they understand that there is no other way. Now even Ukraine and Russia, they have other problems, but they are getting there. So there are more of them, and that's good. But more important, people are accepting Bitcoin. So it has to be used and used in the best possible way. Simple and cheap, then it works much better.

It won't make it centralized, bitcoin will remain as is even if all the countries and governments adopt it. But what they can do is they can manipulate the market through their one accord plan if they do so. But the whales are already enough to manipulate the market but with them working together, they can also do what whales can. They can regulate it but it will never change the character of bitcoin. As they regulate bitcoin, it's not the actual that they regulate but it's the market of it.

Exactly. You can't regulate something that's decentralized. That's because network participants are spread across many regions around the world. If one country decides to "ban" the usage of Bitcoin, miners and/or node operators from other countries will continue to support the Blockchain. Crypto-friendly regulations will only encourage the growth of Bitcoin within a specified region. When there's a "full blanket ban", Bitcoin's growth will diminish. But that doesn't mean the cryptocurrency itself will die. People will find other ways to circumvent government restrictions in order to get access to Bitcoin.

For Bitcoin to go down, the whole Internet needs to be shut down (something which is impossible). Governments will only be able to regulate centralized exchanges since these are concentrated within a single region. But they won't be able to regulate decentralized exchanges, and even in-person trades because of the reasons mentioned before. Things will stay that way as long as Bitcoin remains decentralized and censorship-resistant. Just my thoughts ;D

Which government do you mean? perhaps certain state-run administrations simply need to embrace bitcoin however not really they can handle it, since it can't be an antonym for the public authority that has focused on centralization. Two distinct and problematic perspectives can't be joined, except if both are given a spot as indicated by their separate ideas, in particular, bitcoin with its decentralization and brought together government that acknowledges bitcoin's presence.

Many government agencies are trying tooth and nail to see to it that Bitcoin get regulated but the edge Bitcoin has over most policies is that it's temper resistant and the highest that could be done is to regulate centralized exchanges but for Bitcoin it self it's strictly on a peer-to-peer network base and no form of regulation can alter its flow.
It doesn't make any sense trying to regulate Bitcoin as it can't be regulated as Bitcoin is a decentralized currency that is free from third-party involvement, be it as this may be Bitcoin services are the only part that can be regulated that is why we have centralized cryptocurrency exchange.

I don't think it will ever be regulated for bitcoin and other coins, because as we know no one knows who owns the bitcoins themselves,
the positive value of bitcoin is that it is decentralized and censorship resistant. and keep in mind that only centralized exchanges and services will be regulated not the bitcoins

Bitcoin couldnt be regulated technically and it couldnt be possible as we do all know. Government could only take involvement via means on touching those platforms or services that do
really involves bitcoin or crypto as a whole and thats the only way that they could really give out some influence which it do somewhat affect us users who do really mind off about
decentralization but we dont really be having any choice as long it do touches up crypto to fiat transactions and these platforms are mostly regulated then we dont actually
have other choice but to deal with it.

Bitcoin will be regulated in one way or the other because there is no other way.

When governments will know that they can't ban bitcoin, they will try to find ways to regulate it.
