Title: How to access/ search old/ archived Bitcointalk forum?
Post by: lisayinzhang on November 16, 2021, 07:58:19 PM
Hi all,

I really want to read through the old posts in the old Bitcointalk. Anybody know where I can access an archived, preferably searchable version?

Thanks!

Do you want to read old discussions? Select a sub-forum and go the last page. Do you want to search something specific? Use the search engine, preferably the Google one as it's ten times faster.

If you want to search a specific user's posts, click on their profile and you'll find both lists of posts and topics. For instance, check satoshi (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3).

The old Bitcoin forum was sourceforge, and it was referenced in the first post by Satoshi on this forum. The website is down now however.

I found this mailing list archive while browsing through; https://sourceforge.net/p/bitcoin/mailman/bitcoin-list/?
I have personally not used it, so I cannot if it's authentic, but it seems searchable.

To search by subject, i suggest you to use this topic containing a detailed list of useful topics in almost all fields.

If you just want to get data about old topics, use the url address bar in main topic link and change the number at the end.
Example : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5149708

Weren't old the posts in the old forum migrated here?
At least that's what I thought all along.

If you just want to get data about old topics, use the url address bar in main topic link and change the number at the end.
Example : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5149708
That would be so tiresome
Op would end up with links to deleted threads and offtopic posts.

Yeah, I tried now and it seems there are some threads that got deleted, for the thread 1 to 4 has been deleted and it started with 5 up to 10 created by satoshi.  Even WayBackMachine (http://web.archive.org/) doesn't have access to an old thread.

I dont know what is the purpose of OP asking this but it seems this already discussed in the meta section, there's someone asking there why there are some old threads that got deleted.

@isayinzhang if you want to access the first threads in this forum. There is a simple trick, but you will have to first select a specific board.

For example, the link of this board is https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.0
at the end of the link, add this code
Code:
;sort=first_post

So see posts in order from the very first post at the top in this board, you use https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.0;sort=first_post

Repeat this for any other board of your interest.

It is depend on how old you want most of newbie accounts can access to old posts back to 2011 but some boards are limited to Full members+ and others for staff only.
If you mean old posts from 2010 to 2011 you can get it as archived posts but some comments may be deleted.
The old posts are good for a historical look at them, but you won't benefit from them much from a technical point of view.
@theymos have access to all old posts so kindly ask him and he may helps you.

Another idea could be to start from the posts made in 2019 and continue from there: https://ninjastic.space/search?before_date=2010-01-01T01%3A00%3A01
Ninjastic.space allows you search between dates, but the result is ordered by post date descending, hence not nice to read exactly there, but it's a start.

It’s going to depend on what you are looking for specifically, meaning the specific focus (theme, poster and so forth). Normally the Advanced Search function can go a long way, provided it is properly delimited by the search string, boards, and sought post age.

If it’s Satoshi related, this site includes a series of emails and posts made on this forum and p2pfundation, although forum posts are better read here to derive the context within the ongoing conversations in the threads: https://satoshi.nakamotoinstitute.org/

<…> I tried now and it seems there are some threads that got deleted, for the thread 1 to 4 has been deleted <…>
This thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5158589.msg51606136#msg51606136) talks about those first four missing forum threads. Three of them are viewable here:
Topic 3 was deleted years ago, and it is unknown what happened to it. Topics 1 and 2 were satoshi doing some tests, and topic 4 was some administrative notes left by satoshi.

See below for PDFs of the first topics:
topic 1 (https://bitcointalk.org/first_topics/1.pdf)
topic 2 (https://bitcointalk.org/first_topics/2.pdf)
topic 4 (https://bitcointalk.org/first_topics/4.pdf)

As an FYI, there are links to the above topics in the link you referenced.
