Title: Question about Linode Free Trail for Bitcoin Lightning Node
Post by: tyz on November 28, 2021, 07:54:37 PM
I am thinking about setting up a Bitcoin Lightning node. To test it out, I would like to take advantage of Linode (https://www.linode.com/promotions/)'s free trial offer, where you can get $100 for VPS for free.
But I have a question about this, and I hope someone from the community can help me. Is it possible to accept the offer without a credit card but by using a Paypal account as payment method instead?
Unfortunately the ToS are not so clear on this and I would like to be sure.

I can't see the promotion on the link you stated. But IIRC, I've once known the $100 promo from referral links, upon trying to sign up, I need to fill in billing information and the card detail, there are no other payment options being listed. So, it looks like you can't choose another payment method. You can also try on your own tho, see if that still persists.

It seems you can use PayPal but after you add debit or credit card according to this link below

- Can I use my PayPal account with Linode? (https://www.couponxoo.com/linode-coupon-code#)

So you will need a debit or credit card if you want to get the free trial offer.
I think your last option is to take any Bitcoin debit card check this list below

OP also could use service which give plenty of VCC (such as privacy.com) if he don't want charged after 60-day trial offer ended.
Privacy.com doesn't show any information without creating an account. Have you tried it by yourself? I've seen several options for "free trial hosting", but all of them require at least a creditcard, Paypal or a phone number. I don't want to use those. As an option that works with crypto only: I currently use pay-by-the-hour RamNode.com for temporary VPS testing.

I can't see the promotion on the link you stated.

FYI, the details of the promo can be found on their homepage (https://www.linode.com/ (https://www.linode.com/)).

That specific promotion does not appear to be ongoing, however, I don't think linode will give a promotion to someone based on their PayPal account.

The purpose of these types of promotions is to get people to use their services so they will eventually become paying customers. If it is not difficult to create multiple accounts, these types of promotions will be abused and will not convert into paying customers at the rate they might otherwise.

If you are looking to buy a VPS (to run a LN node) without providing credit card information, I might suggest one of many VPS providers that accept bitcoin as payment. Using bitcoin will not result in you getting free services, but it will allow you to protect your privacy. The site lowendbox (https://lowendbox.com/) has many listings of VPS providers, including those that accept bitcoin.
