It's fixed now. You can close this thread already and do not be surprised if ever coinmarketcap is showing a different value for a moment.
That really happens when they're fixing some things internally because it did happened before, that's just a bug.

Yes, they confirmed that they got hacked again and from what I read on Twitter this recent hack also lead to the leak of email addresses of their users which is bad for the top crypto price tracking site to experience the same issue twice in a year.

Whether it was a glitch or a hack, it was heartbreaking.

Now that I've checked, everything is operating normally again. Coinmarketcap, one of the most popular crypto tracking sites, has been down for a couple of hours. Price changes have been extreme due to the website's outage. People panic sell when such things happen, or get hyped as a result.

What was it like to experience being a trillionaire for a couple hours? Actually, I cleared my eyes twice just to make sure what I was seeing was real or not?

Well I mean c'mon, did you really think that bitcoins price could shoot up that much simply overnight?  That's virtually impossible.  Honestly I'm not even sure that if everyone on the planet bought some bitcoin last night that it would rise to a price level even remotely close to that amount. Price change can be extreme but not that extreme, there simply can never be enough value in that short amount of time to get even close to something like that. 

Honestly speaking, I did not bother that much to check it all out at the time because I was doubtful that it was hacked in the first place, then even more doubtful of the spiking of the price. But then it was all true, except that the increase in price is not a reality haha. Indeed, it is not realistic for something like that to happen over a short period of time. If that’s how things work here, I think that would be just our fantasy.

That kind of outrageous balance in wallet wasn't only on CMC. It reflected almost or in many wallet like imtoken. I don't know how that happened but it is not only with CMC users that witnessed that. At least I was also surprised when I checked some of my wallets but I was calm knowing whatever it was or a bug would be corrected because I have also experienced it 2 years ago.

Everyone panicked at once is this real? that's what was implied after seeing what was going on in our wallets at that time. But I immediately had a prejudice about the hack and it was true. Did you know this caused a stir on all my social media within hours. Just as a joke, it made us happy. Even if it's just a dream. Lol
It doesn't matter as long as when the hack is done we can actually sell the coins at the prices listed, maybe I will thank the hack as well as CoinMarketCap.

Well, I feel it was a plan code distort to show people a glimpse of the future, if they can just hold despite the current market situation and a way of easing depression that may have been caused by the current correction. Well, it made people in my group that ceased joining discussion because of the market to laugh out yesterday. We are back to reality.

This happened for all assets and I know and seems like it was just a bug, however it didn't affect the market or the value of the assets your hold. but still, due to the huge price movements, I got more than 999+ notifications on my phone alarming me about increasing the price and when I checked my walled I saw that I have even more money than Elon, As I said It was just a bug but this bug made us happy for just a few milliseconds when we saw the total funds we got and just for a minute we had a feeling of being a multi-billionaire. 

The hacker seems to have a great sense of humor in this regard where he has managed to surprise a lot of people with his estimated asset. Yes, I also had the same feeling when I found out the estimated amount of asset I own could make me buy some islands in my country, and it tickled me a bit.

But the most unfortunate thing about this incident is the leak of user email and that is a bad thing in my opinion. Hacking like this can happen at any time and on any platform so nowadays all traders and investors need to reconsider how to safely store their asset. It will never be safe to keep it on the exchange because the exchange is the main hacking target of hackers.

it was confirmed that it was a hack and they made a clarification on their twitter page. although this is quickly resolved, it still has a bad impact, one of which is the leakage of some user data which will make it easier to track.

But actually this will also be an advantage for those who really have to make the system even stronger because now with this it is proof that they can still be hacked.

That's too hopeful but it goes to show that you will never know what happens next so you better have bitcoin in your possession if you want to get the profit as the market grows. Good to have some laughs now and then with all that's happening to the market recently, it might not hurt to have them.

hacking will always be a part of our life already. so it may happen again as hackers will always find a way how to hack a vulnerable and valuable system. it is not the exchange site this time but the popular tracking site, but who knows, these hackers are just testing their capability to hack other systems? so better secure your funds and not wait when the exchange where you are storing your coins will be the next victim.

It is a recurrent issue with coinmarketcap and other and it also happens to certain individual coins particularly if they have low liquidity or are marginal coins with weak programming and poor blockexplorers. it is certainly not the first time and won't be the last, so CMC should not really be used as a single source of truth for these matters ... nor for any other to be honest.

Regarding you having more than Elon, all I can say is that statistics say that between him and me we have billions.

I guess it was more of a technical glitch than a hack, right? And it was not just coinmarketcap that experienced it as many sites and platforms are sharing the same sources.

Well, it was not something new. It happened a number of times in the past not just in coinmarketcap but also in tracking apps like Blockfolio and others. And it was not really much of a problem for as long as there was no vital data that was leaked, or no trading or investing decision was made by people while that glitch happened.

I saw a similar technical glitch a few months ago as well. I don't remember which coin, but they incorrectly entered a wrong value for the circulating supply (thousands of times higher than the actual number), and as a result for a short-while (less than an hour) CMC was displaying that particular coin as the cryptocurrency with the largest market cap. Here in this case, they seems to have wrongly entered the market cap of BTC as it's exchange rate. If I check the market cap right now, it shows a figure of $927 billion.

Coingecko was working perfectly at the time. I was surprised that Trustwallet suffered the same fake price just as Coinmarketcap,  people saw their price balance on the wallet skyrocketed with the fake price.

I do not think it affected trading, it only happened on Coinmarketcap and wallet like Trustwallet, anyone that thought he can make use of the period as an advantage to trade and get bigger amount was deceiving himself because the normal onchain value would be the one that would later result to. On Binance, the price were normal. So no trading manipulation.

About hack, it is as usual, Coinmarketcap database has been hacked before and many users details were stolen by the hackers involved. The best is for people not to submit their personal information like emails on the site, else, hack should be expected.

did not even take hours before the CMC forecast back to normal , but yeah I almost fell in Bed when i checked the price of Bitcoin but I know that this is just another update or program loss because after taking a shower and before going to work the price back to normal  ;D (How i Wish this is permanent)
Yeah right , now we have idea how much we are looking in another 10 years from now when checking the CMC prices .

I also noticed that Coinmarketcap somehow has problems with the correct prices at Etherscan.
I just got confused for a moment because I checked one of my ETH-Adresses via Etherscan.

If that pump is real, You will still never got richer than Elon Musk since he is holding much more tokens than you. That price will only happened in dreams since that amount is already a budget of a whole country so where the heck will that money will coming from just to pump that price at that point. It's a good thing that CMC got false hope bug just to temporarily change the feelings of people that panicking on the bearish trend.

That's right, As you said things like this will always happen and not only for big companies, this kind of thing can happen to us.
On the other hand, I feel this is a very valuable lesson so that we can be more careful in taking actions because when we are not vigilant we can lose assets and accounts or anything that is very valuable to us.
It's still better if it's just to test and let you know that the system is still too easy to break, what if hacking wants to do something bad. Of course, we have to take action again to strengthen the assets we have

It is natural that the coinmarket is being targeted by hackers, because very complete information regarding crypto developments is on the site.  Surely there are many users who register themselves.  The target for hackers is usually a user database which they will later access individually as happened to me a few weeks ago.

It is not just BTCitcoin, the entire market went to new all time high and some of the coins went to zero, it is just a bug as they announced and i think it has affected some wallets that were connected to CMC and i think some of the swaps were affected with the bug. Not heard if anyone lost any serious amount due to this, but i have seen a few scammers popping up asking you to help rectify the issue ;D.

I was a billionaire for a small time and I'm disappointed that I'm not a billionaire anymore today LOL. It was really quite surprising to see this. I was looking for what happened when I saw the portfolio but later, after visiting WO thread, I was confirmed that it was a bug. Either ay, it's good to be billionaire; no matter for how long is it.

Lol, this seems like a good funny thing, I wish I took a screen shot of my holdings at the time but CMC doesn't provide a portfolio type of deal just yet, it provides just the prices. In any case people might had some little heart attack when they see that, I am sure that everyone understood it was just a mishap and not the real deal.

Hopefully we will reach insane numbers one day, when I first got into crypto even these ATH prices that we had looked like insane and nowadays we are talking about how we "dropped" to 50k and all that, when in fact that was something unimaginable at the time when I started. I know we will not reach 800 billion or whatever, but maybe 8 million one day? That seems like a possible thing in the distant future.

I thought that they were fixed already, again there's another problem that I've encountered with them and it's no data showing. But upon refresh, it seems to be normal.
Well, the binance take over doesn't seem to show the stability of cmc as before. They've made it even worse than it was before. Hopefully that with these encounters, they'll hear the feed back of everyone to do better.

It didn't take long for the coin market cap platform to return to normal and now there are no problem.

Hacking can be the thing that most people fear the most because it involves money and asset. I don't know what will happen to the market if hackers manage to hack into the binance exchange and share all the stolen asset to every wallet they find along the way. That's ridiculous, but the coin market cap hack has become yet another proof that nothing is truly safe in this space. Some people find it a joke because they enjoy this unique fact on their wallet, getting rich overnight which is called the prank of December.

I don't think there's that much for hackers to hack for CMC. Well, they can take the information and data that they've taken for each of the project that's listed on their platform.
But thinking about hacking cmc, it's a different thing from hacking binance as these two are different platform. It's just that Binance acquired CMC and took the ownership.

 :D :D even one of my altcoins shows so much money than I ever imagine, I thought it's really showing the correct amount but when I check the exchange the price was still the same. Well the visual that one of my altcoins gave me like a false present in this christmas, funny enough to make me smiling  :D

Damn. Missed it. Would have loved to see that gorgeous figure properly. Cannot believe that some people actually thought this is a realistic figure. Such people need to improve their brain-power asap.

They already hacked Binance sometime back and Binance reimbursed their customers after sometime. Hacks like these are pretty common in the crypto world.

This is not the first time CMC has been hacked, compared to the recent API price volatility for visibility, it is more serious than being hacked to reveal more than 3M users' email addresses.  I think these unfortunate incidents are becoming more risky when related attacks from Bitmart, Accendex, etc. are causing psychological symptoms that make the market heavy.  Lol, seriously to say these incidents shouldn't be.

It wouldn't hurt anyone if you believe that you are rich within an hour. The sudden pump of adrenaline inside your body is immersurable. I wonder if someone jumped out of happiness the moment he saw it. Lol.

Oh really? I didn’t get to see when that happened. So does that mean that since there are some exchanges who get their data on prices of cryptocurrencies and market caps, they’re all going to be affected at the time this thing happened? Which means that the price of bitcoin must have likely increased on these exchanges?

Although I know that wouldn’t be a problem because if it happened, all these exchanges would quickly lock down or prevent any further trading on their platform. Some of these hackers are quite funny and they like to create unnecessary scenes on the Internet. Why would anyone be hacking coinmarketcap.com just to pump the price of Bitcoin up? So, I’m guessing that they might have done it for fun?

 
LOL, when the CMC error, I was surprised to see that I have so much money. I thought I had become a new rich man.  :D
however, it's very clear that a bug occurred in CMC, and whether it was hacked or not, but now CMC is back to normal, and the repairs made by CZ and his team are also very fast.

I do not think that CMC ever got "hacked" and I just feel like this was a simple bug in their code that they fixed and that's it. I mean there have been some other bugs in their code before and I get that, but that doesn't change the fact that they are not hacked, it is just a small problem with their code. Whenever they want to change something there is always a risk that they could end up with something broken while changing something else.

This is true in games, it is true for every website, it is always true when we are talking about coding basically, whenever you want to change something you could break something else in the system. But I really doubt that they were ever hacked at all, nobody is stupid enough to hack into a website and just change the prices and leave, what did they even gain from that?

I am more interested in who took the number 1 spot as in the picture Bitcoin is already ranked at number 2.

This was very interesting part of life when we have too many members in list of Billionaire's after hack of this Coinmarketcap, but sadly I missed this opportunity, and now it's back to normal. This was a hack which is already confirmed by company officials but still very funny part as we have price of bitcoin on this level then surly we have some very long list of billionaire's in this community instead of any other place around the world.
Elon Musk surely going to feel jealousy why he has Dogecoin instead of Bitcoin which is now having worth which no one have even in dream. ;D :D

They got hacked again? Didn’t they got hacked just a few months ago? If this is true then there is a serious problem with the security of CMC, after all we all know that hackers have all the time in the world and they can dedicate monts or even years to a single hack.

However if CMC can be hacked so often it means they have not really improved their security since the last hack, so people need to begin to use throwaway emails to register there if they do not want to receive emails asking them for money or links to all kind of scams.

It's is the most funny this that I seen before some days. Coinmarket cal is hacked and due to any bug in the system prices of coins are showing very very high. But now, everything is normal. There is a bug is the system. But developers found this bug and fix this bug in the system. I also have millions of dollars in my trust wallet.

Never used to sign in on coinmarketcap so its not really going to affect me but people who used to sign up have to be careful because their passwords might be compromised so better change the password and also the email password or anywhere if you had the same password. Prepare yourself for phishing attack through your email at any time.

Recently, there has been a lot of news about the CMC hack, and many people suddenly got rich in their wallets, but it turned out to be the work of hackers who deliberately scrambled CMC. If this is not the first time this has happened, then we have to be careful with our accounts, they could infiltrate our emails and spread phishing emails, which can harm ourselves if followed.

Yes, they got hacked again, and is either their security is not secure as we believe, or is just a role of human errors that lead to the attack. Recently, there's a lot of unbelievable happening to every platform owned by Binance, today a forum user makes a BTC withdrawal to the current network and Binance sent the transaction to the wrong network.
I think they need to be careful or they are going to lose their credibility.

LOL, don't think we are smarter than Elon Musk, he surely held bitcoin as well but he is just playing DOGE for short-term profits. It will never happen that we will be billionaires and we will surpass Elon in the number list, hahaha. Man, we only become rich because of the glitch or hack, but let that inspire us to continue purusing our goal in the future.

It is because of this that it is important to always use a different password for each one of our accounts, I know that some people like to use a master password for many accounts and save themselves time and that effort that way.

But when we see something like this then it is important to always be on our guards as hackers are very skilled individuals and if they get access to your email then they will most likely try use the same credentials to get access to any account that is linked to that email, and if it is the same then you could lose whatever coins you happen to have on that account.

There was a hack and the database was stolen and that is what the hackers did earlier, right now what we saw was a system malfunction as far as i understand and they rebooted their servers back and it is back to normal. The major problem that happened was that majority of the exchanges take the coinmarketcap feed and it created a huge mess and i wonder anyone sold at a loss in DEX.

Nothing is unhackable on this world on which it would really be just normal that everything would be messing up since most of exchange platforms do really rely with CMC in terms of market prices.

The problem wasnt really that long that hadnt been fixed but it was fixed that as fast as they can.It is just people do really overreacts on how much money that they do have in their ports
considering those digits are really out of this world.lol
