Why do old posts appear at the top ?

Which board? Here at Beginners and Help?
If yes, those old topic at the top are "pinned" (indicated by the pin icon near the author: https://bitcointalk.org/Themes/custom1/images/icons/show_sticky.gif).
Those are pinned because a moderator deemed it useful for those who might visit this board, specifically for beginners.

Cause someone might commented on it by bumping it even its old. Sometime old post still open for response, or OP (creator of the topic) updated it with some info. Normally it works like that some are fine but some aren't since we have rules for old post.

Probably you saw that post on some other boards like nc50lc said.

In some boards, there are changes with bump scores so that shit topics won't be bumped to the top by shit posters. What is the board in which you posted and got issues?

Merit system help to stop blossom of new shitposters because they can not rank up and reporters do their works to report shitposts to moderator to clean up the forum.

Bump score, merit system, reporters are very helpful. Fortunately it works, if not, we should see bump score implementation in all boards and signature will be disabled.

"Old posts" move to the top if someone makes a reply(an actual response, or a bump); so it actually makes sense if you like to read the actual threads and not just the main post. If only new topics are on the top, older topics with potentially good conversations would probably die out easily.

OP, I suggest you a simple trick to always see fresh open topics like in the newbie section, just add some more characters to the https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=39.0 line;

sort = first_post; desc

And save it to your favorites.

In this case, all new topics opened in this section will be displayed first.
Do this with any section to always be aware of new open topics.

This or just click the column title to switch between sorting.

You can't sort the topics based on their creation time just with clicking on a column title. In that way, you can sort the boards only based on number of replies, number of views and the last post time.
For sorting the topics based on their creation time, there is no way other than adding the characters mentioned by lovesmayfamilis to the board's URL.

How can you say you don't like what you don't like, and how is the board system the reason for old comment to appear on the top page, honestly I think you are spamming and rather than this you take out the rest of the remaining days in the years and go back to the rules, frequently asked questions and every other things that would help you understand the forum, you do deep rooted reading maybe you would come to like the board system and even also increase in rank.

if you are talking about the pinned post, it is there so people who are new to the forum can easily find it. if not, I'm curious, why hate it? if you ask me, it is a great feature that the forum has. although some are abusing it(bumping their announcement thread to get exposure) it is still a great feature to have.
