Title: Bitmex is sending a physical bitcoin to the moon in summer of 2022
Post by: Eclipse33 on January 03, 2022, 07:34:30 PM
Apparently Bitmex and Astrobotic have teamed up to send a physical bitcoin to the moon In the summer of 2022.

"In Summer 2022, BitMEX and Astrobotic are sending a unique physical coin to the Moon, loaded with 1 Bitcoin."

We’ve had bits of the  moon in bitcoin collectibles  by forum member Kialara before , but never a bitcoin collectible ON the moon.

https://kialara.com/product/silver-series-2017-moon/

Love it - cool idea ! That coin will certainly be a collectible of note. Not my favourite design , but definitely unique. Any idea of how many will be produced apart from this one ?

Thats interesting, unique and basically putting that physical collectable and 1
Bitcoin out of reach of everyone. Bitcoin is physically going "to the moon"

Commemorative coins will be available for sale before launch, obviously limited,
I wonder who will be first with the unofficial commemoration of this event?

It's ok but -

- Are they going to make the bitcoin address of the wallet public?
- Will it be hidden from future astronauts?
- Are they going to use some elon musky tech for their bitcoin to land on mar.s.. i mean moon. TO THA MUUN

Interesting, but, what's the point?
By sending a physical bitcoin to the moon, can we expect a bull market as well?
Anyway, good for massive adoption, I guess.

I think this is just to add to the hype of the bitmex exchange as far as this claim is a "first" 1 bitcoin landing on the moon, however I'm sure it won't have any effect on the market price nor hypnotize people into adopting bitcoin massively. I also don't think that a physical coin containing 1btc will be left there. Moreover, ask FE adherents if their launch is really authentic or not. LOL

It's creative idea to spread words of Bitcoin (alongside with Bitmex), although i don't expect much.

- Will it be hidden from future astronauts?

The website made this statement

Come And Get It.

When the physical coin lands, it will remain on the Moon until anyone deems it worthy of retrieval. Decades from now, what will it be worth?

This project underlines BitMEX's faith in the resiliency of the Bitcoin Protocol and ensures this world-changing cryptocurrency will be a part of this historic journey.  It will be a time capsule that captures one of the most significant inventions in recent history, perfectly preserved for future generations.

If you check image shown by OP carefully, it's shown it'll use Peregrine-1. Very quick research shows it's developed by NASA (https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nmc/spacecraft/display.action?id=PEREGRN-1 (https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nmc/spacecraft/display.action?id=PEREGRN-1)).

I'm just going to repeat what I've said back in June of last year: They're probably doing it to justify having "ridiculous price tags on their upcoming limited edition series coins (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5342466.msg57185689#msg57185689)".
- For what it's worth, I do like the overall look of the coin in question.

- Are they going to make the bitcoin address of the wallet public?
Yes:
  • It will have a public vanity address allowing anyone interested to witness its redemption or add some Sats if you’re feeling generous.

An interesting idea, something like going to bury a treasure in a place where no one will find it for decades - and if you have a private key, you can always spend it before someone finds it. While this will probably be a good promotion for Bitcoin, it is primarily PR for the company that does it - and it may create some confusion as someone will think that Bitcoin really exists in physical form, which of course is not true.

In a way, Bitcoin has been present in space for years.

I think there's someone who has had this idea before, was it Elon? I've forgotten who that person or company would be. Hmmm, a race to get that bitcoin in the future.
It's interesting if bitcoin goes to $1M and there will be companies rushing to get that in the future. Who knows though? That might be the twist that we're going to like in the future.

This is supposed to be some kind of marketing/PR move.Right?
Other than that,it's a totally pointless idea.
They are going to waste a bunch of money and resources to send a Bitcoin to the moon...So what?
What's the benefit for the company, the country or the human civilization in general?
Can't they use the money and resources(and the one Bitcoin they're going to send) for some charitable project that will actually help real people? This will have a better marketing/PR result than sending one physical BTC to the moon.

We have been told many times that bitcoin is going to moon but finally its actually going to moon, anyways its just an idea to spread the word about bitcoin and the company itself to the world before anyone does that so they will get some more recognition. If the bitcoin last long for another few more decade and going to space becomes a normal thing then it will be a treasure hunt area.

If you think this is a mission that has the sole goal of delivering 1 physical coin to the surface of the moon then you are wrong. It is a commercial project that delivers cargo in orbit or to the surface of the Moon, and theoretically, anyone who pays can send something to the Moon. The price is certainly not small, but I don’t believe it’s too high for such a small item.

What are the benefits to human civilization when it comes to space exploration you need to ask experts, maybe that money could have been spent smarter, but the lifeless deserts of the Moon or Mars are worth hundreds of billions of dollars for some reason.

On 29 November 2018, Astrobotic was made eligible to bid on NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) to deliver science and technology payloads to the Moon, and in May 2019, it was awarded its first lander contract for NASA. Therefore, in addition of the 14 commercial payloads, the lander will carry 14 NASA-sponsored payloads, for a total of 28. Peregrine will carry a maximum payload mass of 90 kg during Mission One, and it is planned to land on Lacus Mortis, a relatively flat plateau at 44°N 25°E, and operate for about 8 Earth days. The payload mass for the planned second mission (Mission Two) is capped at 175 kg, and the Mission Three and later missions would carry the full payload capacity of 265 kg

Rumor was that the reason why Bezos and Elon tried going to space is to bury their wealth maybe in moon or mars incase something will really happen on earn because they are already speculating war to happen. A very expensive way of hiding their treasures but perhaps gold and some valuable things.

Bringing BTC literally to the moon is too much of a way to hype this but who would mind anyway, as long as they can pay for it why not.  To de moon!

Probably a waste of money but with one less bitcoin in circulation, why no? In all honesty though, this feels like an over the top statement just because you want to promote bitcoin, maybe it's not that over the top with your space faring company but the other one seems too much. Maybe that's just me though.

This is a big ambition dedicated to the need for large companies to show their existence in order to be the first to show their ability to be known to the world as well as to become a time capsule for future generations.

It is just idolized and exaggerated activity.

A physical Bitcoin sent to the Moon, what does it mean? Nothing in my opinion.

However it will be a huge achievement if they send ASICs to the Moon, set up a mining farm there and really mine Bitcoin from the Moon. It means Bitcoin transactions can be confirmed by a full node on the Moon. It proves the Bitcoin technology can work borderless, planet-less.

Such activity seems funny to me. Many people wanted to see BTC's ToTheMoon, here you go, this opportunity has appeared. Literally, which is quite funny.

The day will come when because of this coin colonialists will arrange fights. Or an expedition from Earth will go in search of this BTC.

Just a marketing gimmick which might help bitmex with some more users. But overall impact of such activity on crypto market will be a big zero. Sending something to outer space or moon is required for scientific research but sending 1 bitcoin would not yield anything at all! Rather, they could have donated this physical bitcoins to the astronauts in international space station. That would create some bigger hype and might impact the crypto market positively.

Then bitcoin is going literally and physically going to the moon  :D Maybe years after doing this by Bitmex and sending one bitcoin to the moon when the people could have a journey to the moon just like astronauts but in easier they will find it and this way they will remember this day. But other than all these I think doing this will have advertising effects for Bitmex and surly they will do it do get more popular and known between people, also there may have many questions, for example, I'm wondering if they will share the address of the wallet of not because by having the address we can make sure if someone got access to the coin to not.

I fail to understand what the concept of bringing physical Bitcoin to the moon is like?  If it's just for marketing needs, okay, this is a normal thing.  However, if this agenda is considered to increase the price of BTC, it will also rise as high as the month then this does not make sense.  In my opinion, even if it is given to Astronauts, it will also not have much effect.  Moreover, what is physical bitcoin like and is it worth?  I think it's of no value.  So what is it given for.

One of the dumbest things I’ve read here on the forum, and I don’t believe any of them would be stupid enough to do something like that unless they have no plans to move to the Moon or Mars along with their wealth. If the planet is hit by some great catastrophe, it won't matter where someone's wealth is, most people won't survive a big meteor strike anyway - and the earth at least has an atmosphere that protects against the impact of smaller celestial bodies - while on Mars that's not the case.

Imagine EM walking around in his expensive space suit across the surface of Mars and suddenly hit by a meteor the size of a tennis ball - suffice it to say, a game over Mr.Mars ;)

It's good for Bitcoin publicity, and it's a symbolic act. It's also nice that they're leaving it there for anyone who can get to the Moon to collect it. However, it's not cost-effective at all. It'll cost at least dozens of millions of dollars to fulfil this trip, and Bitcoin's worth only around $50k. When we still have problems here, on Earth, I don't find it wise to make trips to the Moon only for such silly purposes. Also, it'll be in physical form there, which kind of defeats the whole point of Bitcoin because it's in its nature to be digital and people should get used to it.

BitMEX don't do it without strategic marketing plan. We can think that they do a non-sense thing but this activity will catch many attention from the crowd and BitMEX will attract many new users to their exchange.

It can be more effective than any traditional marketing effort and its noise will be huge. Such events don't occur too often. A space flight to the Moon which carries a physical Bitcoin. Hey it is an excellent idea but it seems Elon made it first last year with Dogecoin.

This looks like some cheap sci-fi movie...sending physical bitcoin to moon is waste of resources and sound almost as stupid as Elon Musk sending a car in space ::)
Official version claims that last man on moon was walking in 1972 and 50 years later in 2022 Bitmex plans to send Bitcoin there, makes you wonder what stopped them from repeating moonwalk for so long.
Real question is how much Bitmex paid for this lame commercial  ;)

That's the point I guess. Bitmex for sure paid good money for this marketing stunt. But definitely, they will get coverage for it and people as gullible as ever, will try to look up about Bitmex (for those that don't know yet), and who knows, they can really attract new users as well as retain their users. Paying good amount of money in exchange of their advertisement to the public. They will be expecting to at least create noise during this event.

I wonder if this is in response to Elon saying he will "literally" take doge to the moon.

Either way, I struggle to understand the purpose of doing things like this. At best, it's a donation to the community as well as bragging rights.

@GeorgeJohn I agree with your point. We can not compare bitcoin with fiat currency. Moreover it is also not an easy task to replace fiat with cryptos as the fiat is regulated and controlled by the governments of the respective countries.
