Title: How do I go to a registered Namecoin domain without installing anything?
Post by: RaggedMonk on December 06, 2011, 12:31:22 AM
I am pretty sure I saw a website that looked like an address bar that you could use to navigate to namecoin domains.

I just spent 30 minutes googling, trying to find it again (or something like it) and all I found was guides to set up my own DNS server.  Ouch! There really needs to be a lightweight method of visiting these links if this project is ever going to get off the ground.  Nobody is going to configure a DNS server to view their first namecoin site.  Only people who are already sold on it.

What site can I use to view these domains?

Thanks! Why do most of the pages ask me to install drupal?  Is that because they have never been configured?

Pretty bad 404 - top level domain and most subdomains return with this.  I assumed the site got wiped or something.

Yeah, I think they need configuration or something. I can't find a mirror that "just works" either.

Some of the methods require some installing, but setting your computer to a public DNS does not.  This won't support tor resolving, but I'm assuming that's fine for you.

I agree. It's far to complex to get it working at this point. Couldn't someone set up a Namecoin Proxy of some sort, so that you could visit namecoin sites without reconfiguring your DNS?

+1  this will never take off unless something like this happens.

This is exactly what you guys are asking for: http://dot-bit.org/HowToBrowseBitDomains#Use_a_server_that_mirrors_.bit_under_a_traditional_domain_name

It looks like they aren't fully configured though and have some weird redirect to a drupal site.  Any guesses on whats wrong with them?

What is wrong with setting your DNS to a public DNS?

A work in progress I guess.

I just use a DNS server that allows me to browse them freely
I can access http://dot-bit.bit/

Exactly, add (france)
nameserver 178.32.31.41
or (germany)
nameserver 78.47.86.43

to /etc/resolv.conf and it works.

Not sure which shiny buttons you have to click on windows though :-/.

And when you browse, is there anything actually there?

Yep, works just fine.  Just pulled up dot-bit.bit and my domain I registered 2 days ago (not sharing yet, it's still in heavy development).  Those are regular DNS servers, they just happen to also respond to .bit queries.

Just stumbled across this post. For those people not too tech savvy MasterPool.EU provides a very easy step by step procedure to get a firefox .bit enabled: https://www.masterpool.eu/proxy.

For those of you who are already using Foxy Proxy and don't want to overwrite your existing configuration just add http://proxy.masterpool.eu:8080/ for .bit Domains. But please keep in mind, that MasterPool Proxy is ONLY proxying .bit domains. Thus the use of something like FoxyProxy which chooses proxies by RegEx or String is nessecary if you still want to browse ICANN Domains  ;) Hope this helps.

Who are the namecoin developers?  I am frustrated with it seeming to go nowhere for months, I think there needs to be fresh blood contributing it.

We need google or some other major DNS to support it before it will go anywhere.

Vinced is the developer. However some other persons (including khalahan and me) have write access to the repository. So if you are interested or know anybody who wants to improve the code just leave a thread on dot-bit.org forum.
